This is such a hard question to answer. Almost my complete movie collection consists of kung fu movies.

Can't say it is my favorite but both fight scenes between Jackie Chan and Brad Allan in the movie Gorgeous were pretty awsome. I kinda liked watching Jackie loose for once (and by a little short guy too).

I´ve already mentioned this one but I have to state it again since it´s the ONE single element that redeems the catastrophe:

SW-ep1 : Darth Maul vs Obiwan - One fight to make the mold. One fight to dazzle us all. One Lucas to screw us all and with Jar Jar´s retardiness grind us.

The thing I love about that whole fight is that beautiful force throw moment when he points at the box and throws it behind him to open the door switch. I love that so damn much. That's how to use the force!:D

okay here's my all time top 5 ass kickings, in no particular order but go rent all of them now!

Drunken Master 2
End fight scene - Jackie Chan in the factory fighting (his real personal body guard) drinking industrial alcohol getting kicked into REAL coal fires - 15mins of total insanity!

Volcano High
Last big fight in the school stadium, some great wire work in the rain with huge buried mortars exploding water into the air - if they ever make a live action Akira this one comes close.

Fist of Legend
The fight with the Japanese Sensei - gets so windy they decide in all fairness to blindfold themselves because of the dust, some amazing high kicks & blocks here - plus all the other fights in the film even though over-cranked are very kinetic.

Hero
sword fight with Jet Li versus 'broken sword' on the lake, this is just a thing of pure beauty, the fight with Donny Yen with the spear is better but the one on the lake is more poignant to me as they run across the water.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
The fight in the weapons room between Michelle Yeoh & Zhang Ziyi - I just loved the 'right that weapon didn't work lets try this one' approach, plus it looked great & not too much wire work in this one.

There's a bunch of others like Sword of Doom, 7 Samurai, Samurai Assassin, Sword of Fury, Kill Bill, Musa, Thai Chi Master, Sanjuro (omg the ending of that), Yojimbo.....heh I could go on & on :scream:

Cheers,

Yes. From these:

Kill Bill. The Bride vs. the Crazy 88's & Gogo Yubari. In a scene that puts the Burly Brawl of Reloaded fame (infame?) to shame, Uma Thurman kicks serious ass. It's just a violent bloodbath of severed limbs and (unfortunately) grayscale slaughter, set to consistently superb music. I can't wait to see it in full color. The fight against the lovely Gogo was equally exciting.
Fist of Legend. The blind fight in the high grass. Just phenomenal, the old master and the young student facing off in quite a close fight.
Blade Runner. Deckard vs. Roy Batty. This is as much a chase as it is a fight, but I'm including it nevertheless. Batty's wolf howls still send chills up my spine whenever I watch it. It ends with that gorgeous "tears in rain" scene, simply perfect.
The Legend of Drunken Master. Wong Fei-hung against the Axe Gang & the final fight. I'm a big fan of large gang fights, especially when the heroes are few and the enemies many, and the Axe Gang doesn't disappoint. The bamboo pole makes an admirable weapon. The final fight is also great, with Chan getting roaring drunk. Blowing steam out of your mouth after taking a drink is about the coolest thing you could possibly do.
Dark City. The final battle. This is not a physical fight, but a battle of minds. It's pretty clear on that, too - the participants just stand facing each other while the city is torn up around them by the sheer force of their will. It brings the whole movie to an awesome climax, though, and it doesn't disappoint in any way. And for a battle of minds, which is difficult to portray, it does extremely well.
Desperado. Bar fight. El Mariachi lays waste to the Tarasco bar (even though he was just looking for a man who calls himself Bucho. That's all. But they had to do it the hard way). It's when this mild-mannered guitar player shows the true steel underneath. And, of course, it precipitates the arrival on screen of the lovely Salma Hayek. A bar of dead bodies is worth it.
Fellowship of the Ring. The cave troll fight. When I first saw it on screen, it was unprecedented. A giant, all-digital character in a prolonged, tense battle. Reading the books had prepared me for the story, but not for the visceral feel of combat. I could practically smell the cave troll's breath when it roared at Frodo. It just whet my appetite for the Balrog scene, but to this day I've still loved it the most.
The Two Towers. The battle for Helm's Deep. Again, it was a scene that left me speechless, an epic battle the likes of which I'd never scene. Flights of arrows in the night, a huge orc army, Aragorn drawing steel as the rain beats down; this was a fight to remember.
Return of the King. Pelennor Fields. That's all I need to say.
Iron Monkey. Young Wong Fei-hung in the marketplace, fighting with an umbrella, Wong Kay-ying against the four monks, and Iron Monkey against the two Shaolin warriors. In fact, every fight in that movie is superb, but those in particular outshine most kung fu movies.
Aliens. Ripley vs. the Alien Queen. "Get away from her, you bitch!" It was tense, it was uncertain, and it just kicked ass. If Ripley wasn't already a permanent fixture in the history of strong female characters from Alien, she was after that.
Terminator 2. Sarah Connor and T800 against the T-1000 at the end.

Phew. I have more, but I'm getting a little tired of listing them all. Maybe later ;)

I think when one looks at fight scene there has to be a differentiation between battle scenes, 1v1 fights and group fights.

Here's my opinion:

The best battle scene will always be better than the best 1v1 fight. Its like 10000 the action. Pellenor fields and the battle for Helm's Deep proved this. My top 5 battle scenes:

1)LOTR:ROTK - Pellenor Fields - This rocked more than anything else I have ever seen. It blew me AWAY! The charge of the Rohirrim just brought the epic nature of LOTR out to the forefront and I will never forget it. THe emotion that the battle got accross was incredible. Not to mention that it was practically 100% cg.

2)LOTR:TTT - The Battle for Helm's Deep - This is a step down from Pellenor Fields, but still far superior to anything else. The desperation just came through and the last charge out of the Gate was brilliant.

3)Saving Private Ryan - The beach landing - I don't think any other movie that I have seen can get you into the war like that. It was visceral, realistic, and didn't glamourize war AT ALL.

4)Star Wars: Return of the Jedi - final space battle - That was just fun to watch. No doubt about it!

5)Ran - Storming the old king's castle - That was very well done, and I loved it. Except for the overlly bright blood...

Group fights are awesome, but not really my favorite. They seem far too fake to me in most cases since its rather hard to believe that a few people (or one person) can kick the shit out of so many others. But anyway, my top 5:

1)LOTR:FOTR - Boromir's last stand - This just moved me so much. I got really teary eyed when Aragorn went to him and Boromir died.

2)Star Wars:Episode 1 - Obi-wan and Qui-gon Vs Darth Maul - I hate Episode 1, it was a disgrace to the Star Wars name, but this scene was brilliant and blew me away. THAT was what a light saber fight should be!

3)Seven Samurai - The village defense - One of my all time favorite movies with a great and moving village defense sequence. The deaths brought tears to my eyes.

4)Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - Bar fight - When she mopped up al those guys in the bar I was laughing my ass off. That was funny as hell how she was beating them senseless while extolling her invincibility!

5)Cowboy Bebop - Spike breaking into the Red Dragon headquarters - This was just too cool and sad at the same time. You knew how it would end, but you didn't want it too. Great music choice too.

*i haven't seen Kill Bill, so I can't say anything but it sounds dumb to me, kinda like Burly Brawl, I don't like those sorts of scenes very much, this also being why I don't have any of the popular Kung-fu scenes up top. (except CTHD)*

1v1 fights are not as cool as battle scenes, but they can rock the house nonetheless, my top 5:

1)Macross Plus - Final dogfight between Guld and Isamu - This is my favorite scene of all time. The action was incredible, the voice acting was the best, the animation was gorgeous. It took my love of aerial combat and solidified it into a brilliantly choreographed sequence. I have watched this sequence at least 25 times already, and I'm not done yet.

2)The Matrix - Neo vs Smith in the subway - This fight was the best of all the Matrix fights. It was fast, cool, and not hoaky at all like Burly Brawl. The way Smith backed Neo into the wall and pummeled him was jawdropping. That was what the final scene should have been like... but oh well. And the finish! "Do you hear that Mr Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability." "My name is Neo!"

3)Blade Runner - Batty vs Deckard - That was nearly indescribable. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die."

4)Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - Li-mu bai vs the girl in the Bamboo forest (what was her name?) - The way he just peacefully outdid here was incredible. Not too much fighting in this scene, but it got me nonetheless.

5)Star Wars: Return of the Jedi - Luke Vs Vader - Oh yeah, this was cool, and Luke chopping relentlessly at Vader's saber and finally hacking off his arm sent chills down my spine.

Feel free to bash my choices, but know this:

1)Its my opinion so stuff a sock in it
2)I'm sure that I am forgetting something!
3)I must be forgetting something!?
4)I have not seen all the movies mentioned in this thread, so I am probably missing a few awesome fight scenes because of that.

Good ones in here but I gotta ad this one:

Ong Bak: (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0368909/) every freaking scene

Prepare yourselves for Tony Jah. This guy is Jet Li and Jackie Chan rolled up in a ball of pure kickass.

Give this guy 2 years and he'll be hte next action star for the 2000's. Trust me.

I didn't read the whole thread but the one that I remember most is from Saving Private Ryan, when the two guys are stuck up in a little room. The first guy gets shot through the wall, then the other fights with the German and gets a knife in the stomach. It wasn't flashy or anything, but realistic and intense and scary as hell.

Some that are more visceral than flashy:

Tarzan vs the cat in the Disney "Tarzan" film. Very nice.

Arnold Schwarzenegger in Kindergarten Cop when he confronts the abusive father outside the school "You hit the kid... now I hit you."

With both of those, you get a cool feeling when the confrontation starts.

I also like the fight with the Nihilists in "The Big Lebowski". John Goodman's character knows his way around a bowling ball.

Dang you guys missed some big ones!

My faves are:

-Hero: Fight between Jet Li and Donnie that happens in their minds

-Matrix Revolutions: Zion under siege and SBB

-Starship Troopers: Too many

-The Crow: When he tears up the whole mob

-Ninja Scroll: Big battle against the rock man

-Sakuraba vs. Gracies: Martial Art nirvana

-Bruce Lee: any part with nunchukus

-BlackHawkDown: The 2 hours long battle anyone?

-LOTR: When the Ents f*&ked s@$t up. I love Ents.

-Akira: Amoeba vs. laser cannons, city loses

-and in that unmentionable movie of extreme poor taste, a moment glimmers as Yoda finally whups the whup after talking the talk. Saruman loses.

This is another vote for Ong Bak. This film has suck kick-ass fight scenes that are so different in style to other movies. Mostly because the main character uses Muay Thai. When he hits people, it really looks like it hurts.

Zatoichi is such an ace movie. "Babycart / Shogun Assassin" with just a hint of "Riverdance"...

If it hadn't come out at the same time as "Kill Bill 1&2" it would have been my film of the year, easy.

Drunken Master Two (or Legends of the Drunken Master in its latest US release) is the best kung fu movie ever made, fight-wise.

Police Story 1 (or Jackie Chan's Police Force) has the best action/fight scenes.

As far as American stuff goes, Dragon: The Bruce Lee story had some great stuff. Mortal Kombat had some really good stuff, too.

I think the Darth Maul fight is one of my favorites all-around, because of the depth to it all.

the stick fight that everyone apparently seems to know where i live. i forgot the URL, but ill find it later.

to the guy that said equillibruim earlier, that movie has some great gun fights. the guy stands completely still with 2 pistols (with a semi-automatic function!) and slaughteres everyone around him, even against 8 fully armed and armored guards 2 feet from him. awsome.

i forgot what movie, but it had a construction crane fight.

the robot mime fight in eurotrip.

28 days later when the main guy hit the priest with his trash bag. he hit a priest!

me, myself, and irene: jim carey vs jim carey (pwns himself)

end of evangaleon: asuka vs the (forgot number) mass production model evas:buttrock:

FLCL: kanti vs the robot hand in the beginning, and later on kanti vs the BIG hand with the cape.

most of fight club :scream:

all fight scenes in kill bill 1 & 2 (poor bud...)

eric cartman vs saddam in the south park movie. (Barbara Streisand!)

america vs canada! (same movie) Ned filling dirty canadian scum full of lead, chef aborting operation "Human Shield" during battle, and Mr. Hat goes to hell!

i cant believe nobody has mentioned this: Heavy Metal origional and 2000! :buttrock:

squiddies vs mechs in matrix revolutions AND the last neo vs smith. UBER punch.

ill think of some more later.

I can say with absolute confidence that the best fight scene in any medium that I've ever seen is the first fight between Mugen and Jin in the new TV anime "Samurai Champloo"!
What can I say man Watanabe is a god. The camera is absolutely a living thing in the fight scenes.

Runner up would be several of the Kung fu sequences in Cowboy bebop.

Funniest fight scene would be Bruce Campbell VS his own severed hand in Evil Dead 2.

When Bruce Lee went into the Japonese dojo and fought all there guys. I noticed that Kill Bill took a lot of that scene when she went after Lucy Lu.

Last fight scene in Fist of the North Star (Kensuro in japanese) when Ken (Fist of the North Star) and King Rou (Fist of the South Star) fight it out... and Rou walks away... leaving Ken a bloody mess.

The best fight scene was the simplest yet consistlently entertaining, will a and alway be between the 2 dimensional globally recognised warrioirs who took the lead in The cripple Fight:
"JImmy " the stuttering no legs VS " Timmy " the rollover wheelie!!! :bounce:

Jimmy: Well, Timmy, I guess we learned an important lesson, too, very much. There is room for more than one handi-capable person in Scouts. Timmy: Timmih. Jimmy: I'm glad we're best friends now. See ya at Scouts. [walks off] Timmy: Tim-mih. [Timmy's house, exterior shot. Inside, Timmy is working on his computer in his room. He's working the keyboard and the mosue like an experienced user. He sings:] Timmy: Timmih Timmih Timmih Timmih, Timmih Timmih Timmih. [on screen is a picture of Timmy and Jimmy, in a Photo Wiz program. Timmy traces a cutout around Jimmy's head] Timmih Timmih Timmih Timmih, Timmih Timmih Timmih. [he clips the head off and moves it to the right, and grins] Aaaaah. Stan: [stops at Timmy's room and enters. Timmy stops work to listen] Dude, Timmy, come on! We're gonna be late for Scouts! [walks out] [Park County Community Center, day. Inside the boys are seated around the table, and a new Scoutmaster, the head Scoutmaster, is present] Head Scoutmaster: Alright, boys, I am your new Scout leader. Everything is going to be just fine. No naked pictures. Timmy: [rolls up to the scoutmaster] Uh, Timmih. Head Scoutmaster: Yes, Timmy? [Timmh hands him an envelope, which he opens. He takes out a picture] Oh dear. Jimmy? Jimmy: Yes? Head Scoutmaster: You know our policy: I'm afraid you're... out of Scouts. Jimmy: Out of Scouts? [the scoutmaster shows a picture of two naked men holding each other close from the waist down and looking at the camera. The paler man has Jimmy's head pasted over his] Timmy: [with eyes half-closed, waves at Jimmy and grins] Tim-mih

Pirates of the Carribean: Jack and Barbosa, simply a great mixture of elements, the fighting in and out of the moonlight, the fx just looked great and the fight was very entertaining to watch
Serenity: The battle between the Alliance and Reaver fleets was one of the more unique space battles seen on the big screen.
LOTR: The pelenor feilds battle before the Rohirim came (IE the catapults and trebuchets going back and forth and the wall towers)
Star Wars III: Obiwan versus Anakin
Kingdom of Heaven: The Battle for Jerusalem
Star Wars I: OB1 & Qui versus Maul, before they got to the shaft the scene was just great
Constantine: John versus Baltazar (short, but cool)
Master & Commander: The ship to ship battle at the end
Battlestar Galactica: The Tyridum feild battle

I third the fight scene from They Live.

It's the best cause it's the most realistic fight scene ever. Probably cause it's a real fight.
Who needs choreography and animation when you can just tell two actors to go beat each other up.

All of the best Fight Scenes mostly come from jackie chan flicks
because jackie is only in the handful of actors who is actually dedicated, devoted &
determined to make great films

He is a Director, Actor, Producer, Writer , Stuntman, Singer & more

Drunken Master 2- Final Factory Scene , cool guy with crazy kicks
Police Story 3: Supercop - Brilliant Final Sequence of Jackie Kicking ass in top of a train
with some dangerous stunts
Armour of God - Awesome stunts and some good fight sequences
Project A - The trio kicking ass in the end, and every other fight in the film
Project A pt 2 -missing Yuen Biao & Samo Hung, buts it insanely climatic finale sequence is
indescribable
Miracles -My personal Fav- Absolutely stunning Finale Rope Factory Ending
City Hunter - Jackie vs Richard Norton , funny and pretty cool
Who Am I - Prob the last good fight he ever done; in the rooftop, his later movies sucked
from here :/

and what the heck,
ill put in Obi vs Anakin in Epi III

Actually you couldn't be more wrong. Ong-bak is one of the most original movies released in many years. The movie over all sucked as do almost all kung-fu movies (after all you're not watching them to see an oscar nominating performance). Ong-bak is the first movie (at least shown in the US) that takes Muay Thai out of the ring and shows it as a form of self-defense and as someone who studies the marital arts it was quite impressive to see.

I am also surprised to the Matrix and Kill Bill in this discussion, while the choreography was okay the execution of it just sucked. There is no way you can teach someone in 6 weeks (or how ever long they spent learning the choreography) to do something and have it look as good as someone who has spent 6 years.
