Dudeman 06-22-2002, 12:00 AM I'm having a hard time getting my head around the whole gimbal axis thing.:D
I've noticed that when I FK animate my rotations in either global or local mode, the results of the curves are Gimbal.
Can someone explain to me this Gimbal thing? Also Gimbal-lock is a term I've heard many times and have not quite grasped what it means.
Also to any of you pro animators out there....do you mostly edit in Gimbal mode to have the most control over the curves?
Or can you make a the curves global or local?
Lot's of funky questions.

Gimbal lock is when one rotation axis lies directly ontop of another rotation axis.
This is possible in gimbal because each axis rotates independently of the other. (Imagine you rotate Y axis until Z and X line up - This will happen in rot order X,Y,Z, as rotating Y will affect the position of X but not Z.
Hmmm... make a cube or something, and play around with gimbal mode and rotation order to see what it does.
Apparently the secret to avioding gimbal lock is by thoroughly testing your rotations first, and by getting the rotation order sorted.
In local or global mode, its possible to get in a situation where you want to rotate a joint in X axis, it does this, but it also modifies the values for Y and Z at the same time. I don't understand why it does this, but its a real bitch when your editing curves as you need to take into account Y and Z curves when you only want to change the X curves.
I'm not a pro-animator but i use local mode since I don't fully understand how to get a good rotation order and avoid gimbal lock.
I don't think there is such a thing as global or local curves. Unless you mean curves generated by rotating in global or local mode?
Hope this is some help, I'm not totally clued up on this subject so maybe Svenip will clear the rest up ;)
