View Full Version : Toolset
MellowFellon 01-08-2004, 05:21 PM Hi excuse the "Animation" post, my finger slipped!
I've decided to go get the c4d package. I am really excited and scared. I havnt tried v8.5 but managed to test a v8 demo. I liked the way it felt. I am a max user but cannot afford the discreet package (sameolsameol) for me
I geuss each package has its strenghts, but i'll try c 4d and even if it's not the best for animation (according to some) i'll give it a whirl:p
Has anyone got anything to say about c4d animation?
I remember someone saying that everthing in c4d can be animated and changed over time, albeit not at the flick of a switch. Are there plugins which one could use to get better features for animation?
Does anyone know of good sites to buy c4d? I live in South Africa and there are no resellers here that represent maxon. And i cant seem to download directly from th maxon site.

Haven't had time to try bonderland myself but it looks like what should have been done with hard IK in R8, very nice set of tools and they seem to work quite fast. HArdIK with expresso itself is very flexible imo, but youll really have to know what your doing and it gets really slow in cinema really fast, rebuilding Jason Schliefer's rig in cinema R8 with expresso and hard IK it perfoms really slow, almost not worth having, but in maya it flies.
Then theres softIK, lots of greeat tools in there, but soft IK is not a fix all solution, its designed for specific types of animation, while you can build an entire working rig with SIK, its harder to use and difficult to make a stiffer hard like rig.

Aside from what Kai mentioned, to me the biggest downside to animation in Cinema is the ridiculous display of vectors in the timeline; there's no way to collapse the x/y/z values, so things get really crowded really fast. Anyway, while there are a lot of little things that could be fixed, you can pretty much achieve whatever you want with a little persistence.
Congrats on your decision, btw. I think you'll be very pleased.

As for buying: why not contact Maxon HQ in Germany? They will certainly give you the best solution.
I don't think there will be a site that allows you to download Cinema...

I am a max user at work and a c4d user at home. I am still getting to grips with C4d, but i find the animation capabilities the same if not superior to max. I have alway had a battle with max and its treatment of axes, whereas i dont have that problem in C4D. Also animating points is really easy in C4D, but max involves loads of modifiers.
As for the workflow, i think both are similar in that they both a capable, but both could do with some improvement.
To top it off I really find C4D's flexible interface great to make my workflow work.

for animation I prever max's axes, especially that you change how it to things like screen, view, world, local, gimbal, parent man makes it really easy to rotate things without having to change the angle of your view or having fancy heirarchies or anything liek that

Well, I have a short dino walk cycle done in Cinema here:
http://www.theiguanaden.com
It's not much, but I managed to get that out of Cinema with no plugins (MOCCA on tail) and no other 3D experience and it was my first animation.
Oh yeah...and a LOT of help from the folks at this forum!!

The Dino is smooth--like it a lot.
Yeah, I think Bonderland is a very interesting toolbox to add.The beta is very convincing.
I am pretty confident that Maxon will improve the timeline in the future, as it is really a weak spot right now.
And then there is Motionbuilder(www.kaydara.com), if one wants to spend some more money and learn another app.
I am really pleased with it , it adds almost all the animation power that C4D yet lacks.
Another option is Messiah: Animate (www.projectmessiah.com) .
The new version 4 seems really powerful.
I ditched it now (bought M:A3 some time ago) because MB does the job for me, but have to admit that after a difficult phase of developmentfor the app its finally getting there. They even have polygon-editing tools now

Max doesn't require any modifiers to animate points. You can animate them directly if you wish, the same way it is done in c4d.
