View Full Version : Factor 5 / Hiring Character Modellers
dstripinis 06-21-2002, 09:47 PM Factor 5, based in beautiful Marin County, California, has designed and developed multi-million selling products for Nintendo and LucasArts, among others. Most recently responsible for the critically acclaimed Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader for the Nintendo Gamecube, Factor 5 is also a middleware provider and has created games and technology for 13 years.
We are looking for talented people to join our team as we ramp up development on our new project.
Character Modeller / Art TD
We need someone with the ability to both model and setup realistic human characters within the technical limitations proscribed. We are looking for someone with an understanding of and proven experience in creating 3D characters that animate well and complex character rigs. Ideally they will have experience in film, TV or games. Knowledge of Alias|Wavefront Maya is required.
Responsibilities:
>Character Modelling: The ability to create dynamic models, especially realistic humans, that retain the designs and specifications of the Lead Artist and fall within the technical limitations of cutting edge game technology.
>Enveloping: Ensure that CG creatures maintain a cohesive organic look during animated actions. Work with the Animation Director to design and implement skeletal structures and controls to facilitate animation.
>Animation: The role requires animation skills, but primary role will be in modelling and setup.
Factor 5, LLC is located in San Rafael, CA. We offer a full range of benefits including 401K with corporate matching funds, health, dental and vision coverage, profit sharing, as well as an industry competitive salary. We are an equal opportunity employer.
Reels should be sent to:

Is there an email address we can send samples to?
I have Character Modeling work experience (including rigging), education in animation, and a long background in arts...but mailing portfolios and tapes out to every company on the net gets a bit expensive for unemployed artists.
Im sure your trying avoid floods of useless email applications but I hope you'll give us an email option all the same.
Cheers

Web URLS are okay, but please do not send attachments, and no phone calls please. Please include "Character TD Application" in the subject
david.stripinis@factor5.com
After talking with the powers that be, we will consider applicants that do not know Maya if their work is exceptional. However, we are a Maya facility, so a successful applicant will be required to learn and work in Maya.

Are you looking for a "Character Modeler" or a "Character TD" or someone who does both?? If it's someone who does both and in Maya.... I would be curious to know if your getting a lot of "great" reels. It seems when it comes to Maya, a lot of people that I know seem to specialize in either Character Modeling or Character TD.
thanks,
Roger

We've gotten some decent applications. When hiring people that need to fill a couple roles ( common in the games industry ) you try to find someone who best fills the role, and can be taught the areas he/she is lacking in.
For instance, we would rather hire someone who was a talented modeller with setup skills that only knew max than an "only adequate" person skilled in Maya, as long as the Max person was willing to learn.
The big problem is people generally don't know who we are, so we don't get a LOT of applications. People also don't understand that a game character these days is 10,000 polys - not 300. I'd rather see models with 200,000 polys than 200.

Experienced game people don't know who Factor 5 is ??? Do they live on Mars ?? :shame:
You guys should just say " Come work on Rouge Squadron 3 " and watch the resumes fly in " :airguitar
Dst unfortuantly PC characters are still 1500-2000 range and a lot of people work on RTS games and those are 4-800 poly characters , like imagine getting portoflio from guys at Blizzard who worked on War Craft 3 ..very low poly , same thing with never winter nights and dungeon siege . PC is far behind the times :thumbsdow
Ohh ya and I would also suggest posting this at Polycount (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~polycount/ubb/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro&BypassCookie=true)

Since I've recieved a bunch of the same questions, I'll post some answeres here. Partly to save my time, but also to save you some time:
> Is the position still open?
Yes. I will contact each and every person who applies, even if it is to say no. If you haven't heard from me yet that means:
a.) You're in the running and may expect contact from me soon.
b.) you're work hasn't been looked at yet - but don't worry - it will be.
> Is the position full time or do you want freelancers?
This position ( which is still open ) is a full time, salaried, on site position at our San Rafael facility. We do not use freelancers, nor do we contract work out to other facilities.
> How much does it pay?
Pay is completely dependent on multiple factors, including talent, experience and software knowledge. If we want you, we will definately make you an offer that you'd be interested in accepting.
> Are you guys looking for fulltime animators or game designers?
Not at this time, no. We are currently only looking for a character modeller/TD.
> I don't have a current reel. But I'm good, trust me.
Applicants not showing any work are not given any consideration. All applicants whose portfolio shows a great deal of promise, but does not show exactly what we are looking for will be asked to submit to a modeling test. I understand you often can't show current work ( my reel is close to 4 years old! ) so this is our compromise. also CONFIDENTIALITY IS ASSURED - don't worry, you won't endanger your current job.
As to the comments about people enjoying Rogue - Thanks, we worked very, very, very hard to get that out the door for launch. If you'd like to join the team here, we'd love to see your stuff.
