Hello, I've been working hard the last few months learning flash & html, finally I have something to show. It's not 100% yet, but I would appreciate critiques all the same.

hi James,

i'm not sure if this is because your site is not 100% finished that it took breifly 4-5mins for it to load the preload section plus the top banner stays at the completed loading stat on the main page of the ur site.

Your site looks good, you have some pretty cool designs in your gallery, but a lot of things loads too long and if i'm not actually intrested in seeing your work, i would have left. Though I understand that sometimes the design works that designers produce is hard to keep the file size small unless they want to decrease the quality of it.

Another problem, for instance using your "dad's guitar" gallery section as an example, your images look great! But its overly large, that is not the true problem, but you have heaps of them on one page, i suggest you put links such as "next" and then show more of the pictures with your descriptions on other pages.

cheers.
dez.

Thanks very much for your detailed critique! I'm currently working on a new version of the site, which will be much better. Since this was my first website, my html & actionscript wasn't as good, but I've learned a bunch of things since that I can impliment. If you want, you can view my progress on this Ultrashock thread:

The last week or so I've been studying graphic design, as I feel it would be a valuable skill, as well as help me to design a better website. Also, I've learned how to decrease loading times & filesizes as well.

Here's a link to another Ultrashock thread that also shows my progress:

Thanks again for the comments, they are greatly appreciated!

hi James,

I'm not a memeber of the ultrashock forum, so i'll just post my comments here.

Your site: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~jamesa/NightSkyV2_BETA2.html , looks really good and your saying that this is just your second attempt at making sites? wow dude, you must be a perfectionist :) .

Reading at the ultrashock forum, you said you wanted a better picture of yourself for the site? I don't see anything wrong about that pic, it suits the style that you are applying on your site, because you gave it a sorta.. "cool" theme and you wearing the beanie and all.. um.. its like because the site is not designed as a corperate or formal way, that you need to be wearing suits/business suits etc... i dunno.. its alright wif me for that pic.

Now, for your gallery page: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~jamesa/NightSkyV2_Gallery_BETA1.jpg , Its just my personal likes and dislikes, but the gallery page's layout seems pretty different to your main page, i'm just a person into consistancy or not entirely consistant, but in a somewhat manner, it is. - I'm probably making wrong judgements since your site is not finished yet and i don't know how that layout will apply when its on a real window.

So far, so very good :). keep it up.

Thanks for the kind words Dez! Yes, I also want a bit of consistancy. For the gallery layout I had an idea in mind for the background, so I rendered a gallery scene, and in putting it together I tried some new ideas. Currently I'm making a scene for the main page, and will put the cufflinks at the Miscelaneous page. Yes, I'm kindof a profectionist, but since I just graduated college & don't have a job yet, I need some top quality stuff so I get hired. I'll post new things as I get'm done!
