Not a question about MAya perse, but we're all friends here, and i just wanted to talk a bit about Tekken 4. I'm in the Philippnes right now, and, i'm glad to say, the video arcade that is all but extinct in the US is alive and well in asia.

but what really struck me is Tekken 4 from Namco. They used Maya in the production, but of course its running on a proprietary engine. I just wanted to note the real time ansiotropic reflections and water effects. its all really breathtaking in motion. the best part is, the characters seem to be effected by some sort of REAL TIME Global Illumination!!!!

Now... if anyone has any comments or insights, please discuss!!!

Hey, I'm from the Philippines. If you're a White American, you better be careful of rebels; they'll kidnap you for ransom.

Back to the topic. If the game does use radiosity the radiosity solution would be mapped on the environment texture to simulate real-time radiosity. But there's really no way the characters will be affected by radiosity. It is simply not possible with current arcades.

don't worry... i'm half-filipino, so i don't look like a viable kidnapping target ;)

but anyway...

Check out Tekken 4. It may not be true radiosity, but it really is breathtaking.

Radiosity is just one method of achieving a GI effect (although not nearly the best).

ANYHOW... Tekken4 does not use any radiosity, BRDF, Ray Tracing, path tracing, photon mapping ETC. Just clever lighting and texture tricks. The arcade machine its running on is based on ps2 hardware, and ps2 cant even do pixel shaders.

If you want to see some REALLY highend game graphics, check out what ID software and Nvidia are working on (ie. DOOM3).
