View Full Version : No Volumetric light with Paint F/X?
We have a scene "Filled!!!!" with paint effects leaves and grass. We are at the point where we are adding volume light to the scene and in the last moment of render the Volume light Chops out the paint effects in the scene. Thus totally destroying the image. Is there some way of getting around this? Another type of volume light?
Has anyone else seen this?
Please Help!!!!

It's a bit of a beating, but what about rendering the PaintFX in a seperate layer? Make sure you include all your lighting in the PaintFX pass, minus the volumetric parts (keep lights in their place, however, but withough volumetrics). Comp in After Effect, Shake, or the package of your choice and you should be good to go.
Thanks floyd but, Im needing the volume light to come through the paint F/X leaves in the forest. To get that look like the light is pieceing through the trees into the deep forest.
Or possibly a fake volumetrics idea?

GEDDES.... its your ex roomie Collywobbles. give me a call if you're not in the philipines or switzerland or wherever the hell you have traipsed off to...
wgeddes,
I dont believe theres any way to convert it since paint F/x is really image based. Thanks though!
I'm about ready to model the volumetric shapes and texture it to look light lights should in the forest. I'd really like to figure this one out though, due to the amount we use P-f/x. And volumetric light adds that last little touch in the scene. Thanks for the help. We'll keep reading on it.

easy way might be to put a low poly plane in front of the light and just make some holes (actually many one :) ) into the plane.
so that might be the easiest one. :hmm:

Collin?? How did you get my password to CGtalk?? I'm sending you a postcard.
Thanks for the help guys. I havent found a real good answer as to why this is happening, or how to get around it yet but am still looking. I checked the paint f/x book from Alias ......big supprise but it didnt mention anything remotely close!
I'm still open for suggestions though! I switch over to the maya forum on aw's site real quick and see if anyone has any other leads. Hope this is a fix coming in the next version........

it might be that you need to play around w the zbuffer options ...eg fiddle w the depthType on your camera, from nearest/furtherst, and the Depth flag. cant offer much more as i havent much experience w pFx. g.luck!
Wrend,
Thanks for the tip, I tried tweeking on it (depthType) but havent found anything just yet. I'm honestly dont know what it does yet...lol
Just wanted to add another note...They 3d volume fog applied to a light doesnt react in such a bad way, but its still easy to see what was rendered post. I think I may follow up on this tomarrow as well. Longer render times but it can be fixed easily in layered format.

maybe i found a workaround solution right now. in my endless searches in the net i hit a page with a photoshop plugin called AURORA. the main task of it is to create sky backgrounds, but the page shows one example that it can produce such an effect of light falling through leaves of the tree, just with the alpha channel in the image. so maybe this can help a bit.
aurora homepage (http://64.70.168.15/aurora_overview.shtml)
Iwas really pretty set on figuring this out within Maya, but the image quality of Aurora looks great and in the end whats shown is the most important.
I havent been able to get the demo yet, to try it out but I am nearly convinced that this is my best solution. Thanks again!
