I like it! The hair on his brow seems a little fuzzy though and the whiskers might look a little better if they got darker near the mouth.

Great work!
The face is very realistic, but those whiskers look like theyre drawn on :(, and the hair on top of his head just..doesnt..look right. I can't put my finger on it right now.

But these are small crits on the large scale of awesomeness which this image encompasses...or something...

anyways....ROCK ON!

I agree with what ed said, and the whiskers are also too thick, they are supposed to be wiry in their look too, they look to be the same type of fur as ther mane right now, great job on the mane though, very nice pic, form the plug I thought tis would be a painting of something at first, very impressive model would love to see a wire and perhaps a texture map?

Hot damn. I very rarely ever post in the galleries but this one can not be ignored. I love animal work they just floor me on how real we can make them and yours is a dang near perfect example. I think the mention of the whiskers are from the fact that they are to white and solid white at that. I would make them a little grayer and actually do a fade from a pretty dark grey near the muzzle to the lighter grey at the tips. But by dark I don;t mean to much darker then the darkest chin hairs. That should do the trick.
The only other thing I would like to see is an image of this gorgeous thing with a full body, PLEASE!!!!

It is indeed a excelent piece of work!!!!
(and I belive I know what I'm talking about because I'm also"struggleing"for a lion head-2d in my case)
it is realistic indeed,as others said, and I'm very impressed by the hair.
But(it is always a but, isn't it?)I think you could add some randomness on the hair from ear to mouth on lion's left side because(for me at least)it is too aligned, and looks a little bit like shaved.Like the hair from the forehead too.
And one more thing. In this image the head looks "pasted'on background.Personnaly I would have choose something like below,or I would have done a little piece of the body only for this presentation.
Anyway this are small details. What it is important is beautifully done!
Congrats!

Something seems amiss to say it looks realistic.
It looks a bit like a painting. I think whiskers and a bit of the hair, seem far to regular. They all end the same. Lion hair seems to be more matted and like tuffs of longer thick fur not so "hair" like and seperated strans.
His eyes seem to be squinted in a way that a cat does when he is gazing, yet the fur is even , there seems to be no sign of flexed or any underlying facial muscles betraying the power of whats under that fur. Its very even and I think thats whats throwing me off.
Not sure how to explain what I mean so I found a pic.
http://www.sphoto.com/techinfo/images/captures/lion-combo.jpg
in that pic the lion's eyes are relaxed and his face is droopy, but even then you can see the definition of his muscular structure.
If his eyes were a bit squinted into a cat gaze you can imagine you'd see even a bit more.
well I'm sure you're seen many referances.
Also the eyes seem to lack depth, almost needs more layers to it rather than just a flat shader if thats the case.
Good looking color. I like his markings.

I like it.

You most definatly need more variation to the hair... and to matt it and do that type of things to it.

It's already been said, but the hair is way to perfect, looks very fake. This would be a picture of a "perfect" lion, which in reality this would be impossible to find.

Good job overall though.

Good work Kevinzkw!

Although there is one problem what is probably more visible than the too perfect fur: the symmetry of the face texture. Check the big orangy spot above the eyes and the big brown lines on the forehead. So, if you could put a kind of imperfection, more variation onto the face (texture and fur-wise) than it would be nice.

ffs why would we want to see the wires???
does a lion's topology have to be clean??
it's not like its face is as animated as a human face, with all the expressions and all.>!!
nice textures tho. i would love to see the maps

great work man. you should improve the eyes textures a little bit to give some more realism. then the head would be perfect.

Good job, man! I like the eyes of the lion.
It would be great if we could have a look at the wireframe and texture maps!

I am very glad to see that all of you like my work. I cannot reply it because my work is very busy. Please forgive me! I read the opinion carefully. I feel the crit is correct. For example, the hair are too regular; the colour of the beard and the whisker cannot be satisfactory. I will impove it in my complete work. I render the head of the lion use double P4-2.6. It use me 30 minites.

This is the wire of the lion. The model of the lion¡¯s body has been completed. But I have not give hair on it . I hope my work will complete soon and share with you.

Excellent work, Kevin. I didn't feel the need to see wires as the real effort is in the use of fur.

Have you ever tried Maya fur? If so, how does it compare in your opinion?

kevinzheng
01-06-2004, 04:31 PM
Hi Sausage!
I really used the maya fur, feel the maya fur to have with shaghair all each from of advantage. Maya in expressing long hair not equal to shaghair from such as convenience, Shaghair can very easily of long-haired shape in control, follow one's inclinations, As I see it the maya is in this respect to want to be a little bit bad.
But maya in short fur distributing with the length with directional control, can draw on the model directly, and also is to can comb, keeping the view the convenience very much, this shaghair can't still attain.
I feel the shaghair on the dynamics the result is all very good with the speed, controling very convenient.Because I did not use the maya fur dynamics, also do not know that he has the dynamics, and also can't compare.
Above these say also just create the comparison in the process, I feel them on the end result the difference is not special big, however I even incline toward the shaghair result.
These represent the personal standpoint only, is not enough for maya fur what I study thorough, so evaluation of may be very accurate.

Hey looking at your wire I'll be if you added a hint or facial detail it would convey through the fur nicely.
I think since the model is round and smooth , thats why he looks odd with the fur. There nothing under it to hint at. No underlaying detail.

Thanks for that response, Kevin. Useful info indeed. I think I would find it difficult to achieve the same results as your Lion in Maya's fur.

I would like to try Shag hair (and Max!! cos I only really use Maya).

Incidentally, have you also tried\tested Shave and Haircut?

I look forward to seeing the Lion with completed fur on the body.

"My god you people are picky! It's a great job using Shag hair!"

Ok so you suggest we just tell him what a great job he did when in fact there are blaring issues that should and could be fixed? Sorry, but no one artist makes the best art all the time and if you expect to get any better, then you should expect to have people critique your work.

There isn't anyone I know that shows me a piece of work and I say, wow that's perfect don't change a thing! Why? Because it doesn't happen, ever. People get their worked critiqued over and over and over again, I've yet to see anyone pop out a perfect piece of work the very first time.

I'd really like to know how you ever expect to be a true artist if you just have people tell you your work is great and perfect all the time. You'll end up being one of those people who I laugh at as they struggle finding work and have no clue why they can't find a job.

First I think this is amazing, the hair is excellent and the eyes have alot of life.
Second consider the lions face, if i had to guess id say this is mirrored geometry with maybe some subtle tweaks. Nature is about never creating exact duplicates, a human face mirrored and viewed is totally different from what the face looks like with both sides present. Licanthropy is how i attempt to create photo realistic lifeforms. become the animal and determine its character then establish the outside "rules" for eye position, cheek height etc. that galaxy of space to move in is what will give your lion an appeal like real lifeforms.

There was nothing pompous about my post, just offering constructive criticism. Which seems to be a concept which illudes you.

It is a good piece, however as it's been stated by not only myself but several others, there are things in it that could and should be fixed to make it even that much better.

If you have a personal issue with me then I will be more than happy to continue this conversation in PM's. Otherwise if you do not have anything constructive to say, I would suggest you take your shortsighted comments elsewhere. Have a nice day,

you are exaggerating a bit, don't u think m8?
a peice of art's completion is always up to the artists and "his" preferences. what u see as good, maybe others think are average, and vice versa. there are so many peice of art work (CG and traditional alike) that are indeed perfect.
maybe u are saying that because ppl say "your" work is perfect, but you think it's crap and probably is, and u cannot get work, so keep your panties on m8.
the man asked for C&C and he got some... and made front page. Ha!

Shave and Haircut I have never used, these several days company is very busy, then can continue to create soon afterward, doing the over body when the time comes, the head also further modifies, doing the oneself to also want very much that complete this work as soon as possible.

Just stating my opinion which obviously was also shared by other people who thought it could use some adjustments. Nothing "harsh" was meant nor was my tone harsh in anyway.

Having to resort to personal insults is always a funny thing to observe, I'm sorry to disapoint you friend but I'm comfortable working where I am now, no trouble finding work thank you. I never think my work is perfect, nor does anyone else that I know, that's why my work is critiqued on a daily basis otherwise I wouldn't get any better, I would stay stagnent and my skills would lack and the work would show it.

This will be the last time I post on this thread, too many children running around here who have no clue.

Good luck with the piece please post an update when you are done.
