Game Art Comp 5: sysop: Shinobi - Shadow Dancer

Any of you people remember Revenge of Shinobi? The sequel to this great game was entitled Shadow Dancer. I will do an attempt at recreating the main character Joe Musashi, and maybe his dog (that accompanies Joe in Shadow Dancer). :)

Anyways, here's the coverart of the game. Some scetches and doodles coming up soon. :)

damn..where have i been! i never heard or even got a chance to play this game. Since the main character is Joe "Musashi" you should have him use 2 swords!

awesome pick, BTW. If i had known about this game..i would
have done it also.

EDIT: here is a sketch of the main character(base on musashi) for our game. Might give you some ideas!

I've begun modeling him now, about four/five hours of work so far. The polygon count is about 4k (triangulated) right now, aiming as close to 4.5k as possible. :)

I find him closer to a samurai than to a ninja. He's pretty heavy armored and chunky, while ninjas are supposed to be fast and stealthy.

Please post the wires, too. It's easier to read.

Edit: is that a mail, or does he have chest on his back, too?

wanzai: Well, both yes and no...
I'm aware that he's not looking to much like a ninja right now.
And I am also rather happy about that; after all Joe Musashi doesn't act very much like a ninja in Shadow Dancer, which is the game I've based this model on.

I am however considering to remodel some parts of his armor.

Looks very cool. I agree it looks more like a samurai (field warrior) than a ninja (silent assasin)

How about a wire and a smoothed view?

Just to show you guys that Im still in the contest, I've been quite busy with finding a job lately.. so I've not had to much sparetime for this piece.. :)

very cool looking model you got there m8 very neat mesh hope the textures will be as well done :)

edit : could you show a close up of the hand for me as im totaly crap at those and it would be a big help.

This is a nice mesh for the most part, and a great look overall.

The only thing that bugs me is his waist. Its a bit small.

Ok, here you go. Remodeled parts of the hands, waist and feet.. also did some heavy optimizing to bring it down from 4300 -> ~3800 tris.. :D

you giving the man any weapons?! i think the texture is going to make or break ya, because the model looks pretty clean so far. just for fun and the extra mile you should make his dog too.

looks like a bad guy and not a hero... also tends to look much more like a evil samurai than a ninja...

don't know what you were aiming for, but the model does look awsome. perfect clean mesh.

it's only the design that bugs me.

The proprotions feel more cartoony than real, but I think that is what you're going for. I think your ready to texture him.

As a side note. How did you do the one render with the out line?

I think he looks pretty badass, but the thighs look a little on the thin side, as do the arms. The gap in the crotch seems a little unnatural, and I would take a second look at the fingers - the pinky should be shorter, and the pinky knuckle should be slightly closer to the wrist. Aside from that, I just want to see this bad boy textured :D woots for Shinobi!

wow everything on this model rocks. The only thing that I might change would be the crotch. Other than that, this mesh is killer.

At last, I've recived my new wacom and is finally ready to start working on my textures - not a day to late. ;)

Here's what I've done so far, just scetching out the main colors and so. :)

k...I like the model you got here but....
who wears bright pink..as a ninja anyways....
you see shinobi with a bright red scarf....
and that new shinobi rip-off game with a ninji girl...
IN BRIGHT PINK.....how steathy are you gonna be in pink....

I MEAN COME ON!!!!
....anyways please go with a different colour then...pink....
maybe blue...or green....
but I still like the model...

I will definitely not make him pink.
But I will go for a reddish kind of theme, with very dark colors and a couple of brighter spots. :)

Dark red is in fact a very good color if you're planning on hiding in shadows, especially indoors. :)

His legs seem a little short. You can probably get away with it, but you might want to look at that.

As for color scheme, I think you should give yourself a big headache and, in an homage to the Game Gear Shinobi 2, re-create all 5 colors: red, blue, green, yellow, and, yes, pink. Then you can go on to make their weapons. I mostly want to see Yellow's giant boomerang throwing star. (-:

He looks great, except that you need to get rid of that light line down the center of his mask.
