When using a texture mapped reference plane, how do you set the plane to be visible and the mesh you are working on to be wireframe?

For example, if I set all items to be shaded and hardware textured, it looks like this:

I am currently on THIS (http://www.thehobbitguy.com/tutorials/polymodeling/page05.htm) step of the tutorial, and he says to "move the points of the eye radial so that they fit to your drawing" however I can't figure out how to see the drawing to fit the points to it since the mesh is solid.
