I'm trying to do Dave K's head modeling tutorial and getting stuck on the first step. Funny thing is I got past this step yesterday and now can't remember quite how I did it.

Ok, so I make a plane and then go into the attributes editor, click on the lambert1 tab and then the checkered box near the color attribute, click on "file" in the window that pops up, and then assign the image file. The image shows up on the plane and all is good.

Now I make the next plane in a different axis. Here is the problem, the new plane is automatically assigned the same attributes as the first plane. I need to assign a different image to that plane, but if I click on that one, and change the image file, it changes it for both of them.

Where am I going wrong here, how do I create seperate attributes for each plane?

Can anyone suggest a tutorial that covers basic stuff like this?

assign another lambert to the next plane...........

and never use the one in the hypershade, none of those, dont use any of them
always create a new shader then name it if you wish, select the object, right click the shader and assign to selected object

Can anyone suggest a tutorial that covers basic stuff like this?

the manual is a great place for info on this.........

You could always go the image plane via the camera attribute editor, in the environment tab. Its covered pretty well here and its free:

Thanks wgreenlee, I think I have it now.

btw I'm just using the PLE version atm, so no hard manual yet.

Ok, just going to keep appending my stupid questions to this thread, I appreciate the help and promise to do my part to answer other peoples stupid questions once I learn my way around.

Somehow it seems that Maya remembers what the last tool you were using was, even after you quit and restart. Yesterday I was using the split poly tool and I am occasionally accidently splitting the polygons when I am trying to select them. Is there a way to drop the tool like in lightwave?

thanks!

Typically I do a search in the help of the program first, but sometimes finding something simple can be nearly impossible in a massive help database.

Ok, next question. Does Maya have a tool like drag in lightwave. I know how to select vertices and move them, but the doubleclickdrag is annoying as compared to LW's Drag which is clickanddrag.

i forget how to set it up like that but its one of the option in yer settings /preferances

i'll take a look at it here in a moment if your still havin' probs

Hmm, well I have been playing with that option, I can't quit seem to notice a difference with it on or off. I checked out the help docs on it and it seems as if that option has more to do with moving objects than single vertices.

I'd like to move the points without having to marquee select them each time.

oh, and I looked for Maya on ebay, and didn't see it for sale there. I guess that means licenses are not transferable like Lightwave? Is there a dongle with Maya? Is it a problem to move it from one computer to another?

This option changes the faces so that you can select them from anywhere on the, not just the dot in the center

Yes, maya does support for a dongle, but Im not sure if the license is transferable.

Well I knew I would have a bunch of "noob" questions so my plan was to keep putting them in a single thread, rather than start a new thread for each question. Not sure how else I should have named this thread.
