View Full Version : which version of wings is better? (odd question - i know)
orion 77 01-03-2004, 11:58 PM i know this might seem like a silly question but the latest version 0.98.18 seems slower than previous versions especially in four windows use. just querying some of you on the subject. such differences are clear in menus and navigation.

hehehe no replies (i didnt expect any really).
why does wings seem to be slower, surely erlang is not a fast enough language for a modelling app. silo is much faster! yet wings is free - but.

Yes the latest stable build is the fastest ever.
Wings hasn't crashed on my PC since version 0.97X :)
Windows 2000
P3 667
256PC133
Oxygen Vx-1 32MB(Mirai driver)
W.D. H-D
I installed an older version earlier this month on my system and I can certify that Wings is getting faster all the time, that older version was very slow with just getting into and editing the sub-d mode.
It's also been said alot of time that wings is slow with higher polycount(60,000 and +) which may be true but is still 3 times the limit of nendo's and when I get to decide to open that box in my drawer(Gf4) I may get better results so I am very pleased with wings.

i agree with actarus....wings is actually the only modeling app i keep on my desktop.......i just wish the slide toold would be incorporated so that we dont have to keep waiting for it.......its really a time saver

I rewrote the display code somewhat in 0.98.18. An OpenGL function called glEdgeFlag() is badly implemented (=buggy) in many OpenGL drivers. Therefore Wings no longer uses glEdgeFlag().
As a consequence, Wings might have got a little bit slower on some computers. Speed of Wings depends on both how fast the CPU is and how fast the graphics card is.
I'll try to improve the speed in future releases. I still haven't run out of ideas for speed improvements.

thats good news. I hate to do this but when my model gets to dense i have to import to another app to finish modeling. Id love to beable to do all my modeling in wings. It just seems so much faster to model in wings.
