View Full Version : want to texture: do I need to 'relax' my geometry?

Here's a question: I'm about to texture my model but I hear that using a 'relaxed' version of my model and uvw that makes it a lot easier... how does this work? Do I put a relax modifier first and than an uvw-unwrap modifier? and then for the final renders I turn off the relax modifier??
Or is this theory just outdated and become unnecessary with the current uvw tools?

You can do this work with 3ds max5 by some free scripts (Relax uvw)...
But this plugin is available in 3dsmax 6 version (With same name "Relax uvw" in Unwrap uvw modifier).

But you should know using "Relax uvw" is different from using relax modifier and unwrap uvw, because with use of relax modifier you can select some specific vertices with mesh select and then apply a relax modifier with a number that you want and you do it until you achieved to your result or come back to previous modifiers and change its number…

But how to do this method:
First, you must copy your geometry.
Second, you should put a relax modifier or several of them and than an Unwrap uvw modifier JUST to save the UVs.
Now you should hide or delete this relaxed geometry that you saved its UVs and then select another copy of this geometry(Original one without relax) and put an Unwrap uvw and load the UVs that you saved before from relaxed geometry…

But as I said you can use "Relax uvw" in Unwrap uvw modifier with selecting some specific vertices but you can't come back to your previous works you have done, Just with Undo/Redo…

by the way, you should know that you don't need to relax your geometry for texturing, Just some specific vertices,for example when you have an object with overlaped uvs or some specific places to prevent stretching your texture ...:thumbsup:
