View Full Version : Space Odyssey 2001
InKraBid 01-03-2004, 12:36 AM Hi!
A friend of mine who's a photography student, wants to make a greenscreen pic together for an exhibition.
The main idea is to have a 60's female flight attendant in front with a tray and a smile, and I'll make the backdrop.
It's supposed to look like a 60's scifi setting.
We first made our own spacelounge, but later went on to making it after a photo ( from space odyssey 2001) and adding a few things of our own.
Detail is essential to the pic, as the finished picture will be about 200 X 150 cm.
Crits are the only reason I'm posting this, so go at me like Judge Dredd.

I dont really think you've captured the style of 2001 as they use BLACK WHITE and some ORANGE. You've gone for loads of ORANGE, some BLACK and GRAY.
trim down the orange parts and try to alter the white material so its shadow falloff (?) isn't gray, but picks up more radiocity from the scene.

I think your really close but id add some real world imperfection into the surfaces. what stands out for me is that your render looks brand new and the still from the movie looks real. hope that helps!

Have to agree with this. Your scene is currently very orange :) Also, as suggested, imperfections add a lot. Just scuff up the corners a little, slap a really light noise on the surface to give it some dents here and there. I know you haven't started on materials yet, but that will help too. Also, if you can, do a radiosity (or equal method) render to see how your little detail hold up. At the moment, it doesn't look too good since your lighting is pretty basic. Lastly, more panels. On the photo, there are more panels around/near the mirror-like glass thingy for example. And in general, small details like bolts, wires and such could help.

To me, there seems to be a lack of depth. Work on the lighting and play around with the camera's FOV and position.

if you take a good look at the bottom photo you can see that the cushions look like cushions, in the model(top)the cushions look like extryded panels made of a hard material

I think some tweaking with the lighting is required to create a realistic looking image.
The lighting in this image looks washed out and very omni.
Play with some spots and think about reflections off of different surfaces.
But on the way for sure

Hi!
Thanks for all replies
1
The LIGHTING is the last thing I'm going to work on, right now I'm concentrating on the model itself.
2
The TEXTURES are going to be very plastic and brand-new, to give it a bit of a 'cheesy' look, but yeah, I'll put in some materials for the cushions at least.
Feedbackfeedback:
hussienhussien: Thanks, we've worked with it a LOT to get it just right, and the next pic will have CUSHIONS..
wadis: see 1
lowjack: yes, but we have to match lenses with the photograph, so we're tweaking the model like mad here :)
mandark: see 2
t24 \ urgaffel: If you see the original, it's got very beige\yellow lighting, partly because it's an old photo probably. but there was an ugly big tube taking up the main part of my model in the first pic, so it may have looked very orange indeed.. I think it looks better now thou.
