View Full Version : Maya subd with creases and renderman/mr?

I'm curious as to the functionality of modeling subd's in maya and using creases if you plan to render a model in renderman? Can you make use of the hierarchial levels and still have a functional model for renderman or mr? Or do you have to use the 'edge pileup' method to create creases?

See I'm working on a model right now (subd method) and I'm finishing up my low poly cage. I'm trying to decided now which workflow to follow so I'm sort of at a fork in the road so to speak. My ultimate goal is to have to model be renderable directly in renderman or mr. This of course brings up concerns about the heirarchy levels. It also brings up questions on useing the 'full/partial creases' feature in maya. So it seems like I have one of three potential workflows.

1. Build all the detail into level 0, using the 'edge pileup' method to create creases of varing strength. (I hate this method for really sharp angles cause of all the useless polygons that are created)

2. Build most of the detail into level 0, converting the model to subd's and using maya's full and partial crease functions to finish the shape.

3. Build the model using Maya heirarchy levels (actually this probably is not a good idea).

Can anyone comment on the best workflow for my intended use? Also, if there's and option I didn't mention and know about please let me know.

thanks:)
