We are starting a new contest this month and the winners will receive a free copy of the LightWave 101 Interactive Training Course and Curriculum Guide from epic software group.

What we would like to do is get a bunch of newbie’s like myself and help them get to the next level.

So to do that we are calling all newbie’s to a contest that will last a few days. Then we will have a panel of Wordware judges to pick 3 winners per week. We will do this for more than a month so all of you will have chances!

So I would like to see all you newbie’s out their model and texture a space ship. No specific one, be creative...it can not be one from a film or show.

We will pick 3 of you as winners and send you this free Training course. We will have more specifics like when and where to post the final LightWave models in a few hours.

For more information about this training material you can visit http://www.wordware.com/lightwave101/ we are also offering a 20% discount on the regular retail price of 59.95 on this training software.

Okay, post any question here about this contest.

We would like you to model a space ship of some kind and we will be judging you on the design, modeling, and texturing of the craft.

The deadline for this contest is Jan 9th. I know this is not a lot of time but that way we can do more contest :).

Let me know if you have suggestions. Entries will be posted on www.wordware.com/LightWave101 for viewing when the contest is done.

Thanks!

Anyone who could use a101 course on Modeling, Texturing, Lighting and such... This is not an intermediate course but if your are like me at this point your trying to get your hands on anything intro to get a good grasp of the techniques and styles to adapt you own.

Let me know if that does not answer your questions N2ChristTheKing :)

Wow, only the 2nd day of the new year and you are starting up the fun. Do you have any submittal guidelines? mokba

Yep that answers it, good luck to all who enter!

Wes, You've got to make sure they post their creations here, or at least the winning ones!

Its always nice to have reference material, but i wonder if im a bit too "intermediate" to take the opportunity away from someone who needs it more?

Trying to start the new year right... We have a few of these to give away and help the community...

A big thanks to epic software group for teaming up with us...!

The only rule would be to be creative…no copying work…and it has to be something new. Not something you created before.

I would like to see WIP’s if you feel it is fair to everyone…so if you post a WIP the group can help you and I think others could learn from the post.

What do you think..?

The next contest will be on Architecture.

I would say if the thought of this contest is a no brainier for you then...don't enter :) Not being rude :) but if this is not a challenge for you and you could do this in your sleep then this course is a waist of time for you anyway...why try.

But if you do have to look at reference books or videos to help you with modeling then I would enter...

You make the call my friend :applause:

Here I go...

Standard ship with Polydiamond tip burrower for interplanatary landing mode, a hyper-flanging newbie beam ( mounted on the dash) which seeks any intelligent lifeforms out theres, syst-a-matic polker wings for tight get aways, and hull protected mazilborts for privacy,

Rough sketch, I know, but will be adding as I go.

Thanks for another contest to aid us beginners.:)

Cool, this looks like it may be fun. I think I'll try it. This is my first attempt at a spaceship of my own building. This is actually more of a space craft instead of an actual ship. Anyhow this is what I got so far with the camouflage body. I may end up (probably) with an entirely different style in the end, heh.

I decided to go for a very retro look on this, scientific principles aside. I have been modeling for a bit and have just started some basics on the textures. I still want to add detail in the engine/thruster area.

I can see we are going to have some awesome entries here.

Wes, if you want to get some more people you might try posting to other forums, you may have already, but places like LWG3D, Simply Lightwave and NewTek would probably be good. Also hobbyist communities would probably have more newbies on them so you might try the Lightwave forum at Renderosity and 3D Commune

I had no specific idea, just pulling things around and yes it's startin to look like some strange spaceship, that rotates when it's flying.

I'm trying to attach something, but 20k is just WAY too few, so I cant provide a preview.

Well, I think I'm done with my effort in this for now. So much yet to learn, but it was fun trying to figure things out with this. I decided on a variation of the space-shuttle theme but the piggy back craft is a space invader type fighter. Texturing was the big problem for me. I don't really grasp that concept at all. Overall had a good time working on this. Good luck to all and thanks Wes for challenging us to improve.

Its the second model I've ever finished modelling and texturing. Would have liked to add more details and done a bit more with the textures, but I'm pretty much out of time and fairly satisfied with how it turned out. I actually learned quite a bit in the process, so thanks for the challenge, and good luck to all.

Finearts

I would make the engine part a different color...Maybe red and yellow like the front...maybe something else. Give it some burnt edges back where the exhaust is. Maybe make the wings something other than green. Again, maybe Red, or yellow. Make the part that looks like the cockpit glass (can barely see it now) a grey-blue color with a lot of specularity and reflection so it looks like glass or close to it. Maybe make a slight gradient from yellow to yellow-orange on the yellow part of the front of the aircraft, just for some variation in color. Only other thing I can think of is add some sort of exhaust gas, flame or energy, and maybe blur or distory the background to look like heat distortion behind the ship. (yes i know you can't have a flame in real space, but its a sci-fi ship, so who cares) I love the retro, cartoony feel the ship has right now though, very cool.

BTW, I think all of these suggestions would literally take you 15 mins to do. Everything but the engine burnt spots would be done in the surface editor. :wip:

Is it still possible to koin the contest?
Ok i know it´s a lil late, but I just the joined the Board and saw this Topic.
I´m a Beginner in Lightwave and never have modeled a real Spaceship without any advice of a book or so.
Just the one that Dan Ablan does in the Inside Lightwave 7 Book.
I think I can´t compete with the other guys here, but it is a challenge.
So can I still join and if yeah, when is the Deadline on the 9th?

whew.
It is very difficult to make something in just a few hours.
My ship is totaly made out of my mind so i had no referenceto reply on.
Also I had very less time and coulnd´t texture it much. I used a Spherical Reflection map to demonstrate the reflectivity of the Hull.
Also I had no time to mak an Interior.
And myself ain´t no intermediate, still noob and beside this ship I hardly made anything out of my mind. I always made everthing after tutorial step by step and this is one of my first ships without any tutorial.

Hope you like it :D
I´m just saying this, so you know my status with 3D.

Our first place winner is.........

finearts2 !!!!

Sorry for not posting sooner it was a tight race and we got sidetracked...very sorry...

Here is what our judges had to say.

While I did see a few other pics that looked great, this one stood out for a couple of reasons. First, the guy started with a concept sketch. It was clear that he was starting from scratch. He continued to post progress renders, so it was clear he was working everything out. And finally, he thought he was done, but got pushed by the community to take it a step further. That resulted in his final piece. We chose him as the winner because he did the things that help new users to grow. He started with an idea. He implemented it. Then he pushed himself to go further by accepting critiques. In the end, he's the winner on multiple levels.

Great work finearts2!! Congratulations!!!!

We will announce the second and third place winners tomorrow..

I just found out, and all I can say is thank you.

Congradulations to Mokba and Mossou for also winning. GREAT work you both did, and to say I was worried about my chance of winning anything once I seen your submissions would be a understatement.

I would like to say a BIG thanks to all the other Wavers that posted their submissions. It is saying something when you enter a contest and each entrant shows class and support for one another. From one newbie to another, I wish you each great success and hope we all continue to learn and to teach as we grow in the Lightwave community.

FINALLY, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, I would really like to thank KURV for holding yet another great contest for our community. Your continuous generosity is both appreciated and overwelming. I would like to thank those who voted for me and said such kind words. It really means alot to me and I hope that as I continue to learn Lightwave, my art I show to the Lightwave community will be, in no small way, a reflection of the support you give to us.

Hey Wes heres an idea inspired by ---- You! What about doing a small series of contests which build on top of each other till they get to a final animated scene. Say start with an architectural model(s). Build that up next with a basic set to put it in. Next add a character. Then animate that character with the set and building(s). Just a loose quick poorly thought out example. But since you have this open to inspire and encourage beginners/intermediates what better way then let them work all the way through the process?
