Guys just some advice, if you're using Maya it's almost best to use windows 2000, not just for the official support hoopla, but generally, the opengl functions as it should in win2000, so you can avoid xp display bugs like a freezing render window and disappearing icons.

Also win2K is Faster than xp, run both on the same system and you'll know.

Part 2 video cards
Investing in a cheap, even old quadro card is a good idea. I got a Quadro2 for 37 dollars (US) and it has been more than worth the money. Esp when it comes to using paint effects, and other features that uses the opengl overlay feature.

If maya is your primary tool, making these 2 adjustments will contribute greatly to your lack of artistic interference :) Goodluck guys :)

BTW u could always get a geforce and do the softquadro patch. I did it and the performance boost i got was pretty amazing. Especially in paint fx. I have a few annoying display problems when my computer comes back from standby mode tho.

Yes, you can 'hack' the gefoce to speed it up, but the features are not solid and there will be display bugs which I stated earlier, that is why that is not ideal.

What about Softquadro with a GeForce 3Ti card ? I didn't succed to hack the drivers :(

Under XP I have some display problems in maya .. some weird lines in opengl mode .. but not under win2k ! weird .. I should switch to linux :)

I had sooo many problems with win2k and my geforce card (bluescreens x 4000000)... i tried all the latest drivers, win service packs etc....

as soon as I swapped to winXP all problems disappeared. i then lay on my knees and worshipped the god of circuitry.

Note however, that you cannot soft-quadro a geforce 4.

I also suggest an ATI Radeon 8500, with the latest drivers and the upcoming pricedrop a very good choice for Maya.

Windows XP is faster with rendering in Maya, but the rest (modelling/dyn/anim) is slower because of the butt-ugly interface which uses up much more ram and keeps your card busy.

Exactly what would getting a quadro card do for me? I already have an original Geforce DDR card and I haven't had real problems with it.
