Hello,
I was wondering if anyone here can direct me to a good 3d human modeling book? I've only found two so far, and maybe you guys can help me decide.

Here's one I found: "3D Human modeling and animation" by Peter Ratner

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0471215481/qid=1073009105/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/002-7022167-2503262?v=glance&s=books

and the second one is: " Building a Digital Human" by Ken Brilliant

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1584502851/qid=1073009486/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-7022167-2503262?v=glance&s=books

Anyone have experience with these books? Or could suggest a different training book/material on creating realistic human models? I prefer the poly/subd method.

Thanks,
George

I have the first book you listed there. I think its a great book. It shows step by step for both major modeling methods, and it also gets into texturing.

I would recommend it.

Cant help you on the second one though.

If you are looking to do low-poly modeling, I would also recommend paul steeds book called "modeling a character in 3ds max". Hes the quake guy. Its also a great book, but it doesnt have much in the way of facial animations and edge loops.

Hi George,

I also have the first book, "3-D Human Modeling and Animation". It has some really nice wire and shaded examples for modeling in poly and sub-d throughout the beginning, intermediate and advanced modeling techniques; plus includes a full chapter on human anatomy with drawings and photos; and a sample curriculum if the book is used for developing lesson plans.

I checked out the other book, "Building a Digital Human", but since I already had the other one, saw no need to purchase it as well. It had nothing new to add and I thought the first book was actually much better.

My other human focused modeling books are:
- "Stop Staring" by Jason Osipa, primarily facial modeling and rigging in Maya but can be applied to other 3D applications
- "Animating Facial Features and Expressions" by Bill Fleming & Darris Dobbs, mostly shaded head models shown but some good references nonetheless (got it used)
- "Inside Lightwave 7" by Dan Ablan, has a really nice tutorial on organic modeling of a head plus additional chapters on character body modeling and construction.

I also have "Modeling a Character in 3DS Max" by Paul Steed, and it's ok for modeling low-poly figures and is the book I referenced when I first started modeling with Max last year. It primarily uses tri's rather than quads for the model. I learned more, tho, from the Joan of Arc online tutorial (translated version) and others at 3dTotal about human modeling than from this particular book.

Just so you know: I've been working with Max at my school a bit since Fall 2002, started working with Lightwave in October 2003 for my student internship, and now get to play with Maya at home, too - I have most of the Gnomon Workshop Maya DVD's and quite a few Maya specific books plus the excellent feedback available from this forum....should be most fun! :)
