Drew the first thing that came to me, keeping it simple as I can only afford to spend a couple of days to complete the whole process of concept to final.
BETTER GET CRACKING!

Well, I've started modeling and have decied to do some designing on the fly, as I wasn,t too happy with the feel of the structures in the concept.I'm going for a more simplistic organic feel.

Nothig flash, I'm going to do the unthinkable and use one 512*512 texture for the whole scene, excluding the backgroud!
Hopefully a little tiling and bump mapping might just pull me through.

Sorry. the last milestone I submitted was supposed to be 'Texturing'.
As far as the lighting goes I'm only going to use 1 omni light, yes you read that correctly, so go easy on me as after tommorrow I'll only have the morning to finish off the final.
I'm feeling rather tired now.

Such lovely swirly shapes! Great style too, it looks very clean and a bit retro-futuristic.

Initally I wanted to cover the whole surface with city like structures, but it's already going in a different direction to what the criteria stated.
I'm going to make the city quite small and suggestive so it's open to interpretation.
I was playing around with a different texture, but it's getting too late for me to spend any more time on that.
I've also resorted to using some basic primatives for this, just cutting some serious corners on this one.

=whoa thats pretty damn good! im already amazed at what uve got done in such tight time constraints... i wonder what u could have done if u had the time. but relax man and dont rush... rushing is bad apparently. thats some cut proverb regarding that but i forgot what it was. oh well good luck and great work!  peace!

I really like how u got such a hi-tech feeling with such simple "shapes". Some real design touch u got there. I'd make some of the shaders a bit more alien, instead of just futuristic looking.

I seriously need to finish this scene, so I have taken the easy way out and used a photograph of a sky, which I rendered out as an enviroment. I've also added the city and some cable-like things to give the impression that it's more than just a dwelling for aliens.
From this point I'm going to fudge the rest of the scene in photoshop, the first thing will be to manipulate the sky, just so I'm not being a total loser by pasting a photograph straight in. As you can see the pixel density of the background doesn't gel with the foregroud but this should be short work in photoshop.
I've also tweeked the colour of the lighting, and dulled some of the tech as I'm not a big fan of too much colour.

Well I've sorted out the clouds and popped in a little more detail in the background. I've also added some subtle blur and lighting changes. I'm also tweeking the colour to what I thought would be more realistic, if this place actually existed. I'll just add a little more detail in the clouds so it doesn't look too barren, although I don't want to kill it with too much detail.
I'll probably be back in a few hours with the final. I'm thinking ELECTRICITY!

Wow seriously love what you've done here, keep going it's looking great. I prefer the blackish grey over the green, the other's a bit too colourful, maybe somewhere between the two??

wow! love this. Very stunning dynamic image you have there. The only thing you may want to consider is that "everyday materials are a thing of the past..." and yours do look somewhat metallic.

Well that's it for me, I can't afford to spend another minute on this one, and although it's the complete opposite of what the judges will be looking for, it was heaps of fun trying to nail my own deadline. Well since I'm so far off the mark, you guys are one step closer to winning some prizes.
I must say a big thanks to the people who actually took time out to comment on my work, out of respect I shall return the favour by taking some time out next week to look at your work. More importantly I hope people can draw from this when faced with daunting deadlines of their own.
This is the last scene I will be creating in 3DS MAX, as I am going away to learn MAYA.
GOOD LUCK to all, even though you don't need it as the talent I've seen so far is mind blowing!
STORY: An anomaly which has been growing in our own solar system for the past one hundred years, has prompted researches on Earth to investigate it further, by sending a human to what appears to now be the surface of a planet. Armed with the latest technology the reasearches here will be updated with a constant stream of analytical data from the planet's surface. The information gathered thus far has revealed that the surface, which has the charecteristics of knoted iron, is in fact a bi-product of what can only be compared to as nanno technology. The air has a very high moisture content, and huge tentacle like cables portruding from the surface, gracefully float through the air and attract veins of lightening from the colassal electrical storms, which constantly tear through the skies. Other life forms have not been detected as yet, although the planet itself seems to be one giant living entity, or bio-mechanical machine, generating an atosphere to feed itself, and for what purpose?... we don't know.
P.S. If you can afford to buy a drawing tablet, do so immediatly, as trying to paint with a mouse is like sucking mince through a straw.

Aah well done looks excellent. Good luck with Maya. Will you submit to Expose2? I know what you mean about drwaing with a mouse, haven't had the chance to properly try a wacom yet. It's on my list though

whoa thats EXCELLENT!
Your work is very nice.
I see excellent lightning, very good post-effects and an unusual feeling for space and depth.
You underestimate your staff here... who knows what will win.
At least me would definitely consider you in the top 10 competitors.
Best and keep on fighting

I hope it doesn't lose the nice sense of scale by going to the required vertical format.
Great image!!!
