I'm happy, but I'd be happier if it wasn't a press release from maxon. I wonder what they used it for in episode 2. Didn't they only use it for the titles in the mummy or something?

Maybe this will make it easier for some people to get jobs.

I wonder who else has access to the Roncarelli Report...

Maybe we could ask them?

It would mean a whole lot if it's true, more plugins, more function, etc...

1)Max
2)LW
3)C4D
4)Maya
5)SI

As for the issue of it being posted by maxon, that is because the report isn't to be advertised, as many on it do not want their results published, Maya and Houdini and such did not want the specific number of users posted.

As for what it was used on in starwars, just remeber every app and its little brother were used on that movie, Lucas lets users use what they know along with proprietary software. Things I can assure were done using XL as well as various other apps, many mattes including the mattes in the Count Dooku (sp?) VS, Ani, OB1, and Yoda.
Two XL users that I know of were involved in the production of SW2. Simon (SIMONW) and Phil (CAPTAIN3D) from postforum.

Nobody can accuse George Lucas of being a dummy... :D

Interesting that someone like him is able to understand that translating data cross platform isn't much of an obstacle. Makes me more impressed with the man...

He lets the artists use almost anything, as long as they give him what he wants why tell them what they have to use? Too bad more companies (and artists for that matter) don't think like this. Thats why I use XL because it lets me get what I need to get done... done. Why don't I use Maya, IA) don't know itr wel enough, and B) DOn't like the interface and renderer. They don't do what I need so i won't use it. If a jobe demanded it I woulod try to use it sure, but if they said use what you want, I would install a copy of XL right away.

I'd have several, Rhino, Cinema, UVMapper (in spite of the fact that I have BP3D, I still am more comfortable with UVMapper)...

And YES MAXON: I STILL WANT A 3DM IMPORT FILTER FOR CINEMA!

Hey Kaiskai, you said it was used for matting? I thought that was one weakness. I've tried putting characters over pictures several times, but unless I leave anti aliasing off (or at least just on geometry) it slightly blurs the background object (my output settings are the same resolution as the original). I've tried messing with the render tag, but the forced part doesn't go lower than what's in the general render setings. I know "best" aa's edges and textures. Is there a way to just get it to do edges alone or have I not skimmed my manual enough?

for your issue Are you using Straight aplha's? That should fix your problem I think. Not sure though.

What I meant though is for creating Matte Paintings. Simon Painted many Matte backgrounds for the movie including the Yoda VS dooku scene

Oh.

No I was talking about putting single objects inront of background objects, no alpha. Never mind, thanks.

Sounds like you misunderstood this... CINEMA was not used for compositing, but i.e. Simon Wicker did Mattepaintings with it, which were composed into bluescreen recordings with a compositing software...
Would be dumb to do compositing directly in a 3D Software (concerning a feature film...) There are better (but more expensive) ways...

Hmmm, so when you say painting, you don't actualy mean brush painting. Okay.

Caravaggio if I remember rightly geometry anti aliasing just aliases the edges.I used to use the "edges only" aliasing filter in 6 myself and then could not find it in 7.Also maybe you have a custom camera adding a bit of blur if you have dof set?
