Okay...

I know you guys have seen this, but I want to run it by you and find out if there's a solution to issues involved with Wavefront OBJ imported meshes, Materials and Hypernurbs.

For the record, I'm using XL6.3

The hypernurbs issue isn't important really, I mention it because I think it may have to do with the mapping issue. That imported Wavefront OBJ meshes won't display as Hypernurbs in Cinema. Renders subdivided it seems, but wont' display.

Anyway, the BIG issue has to do with mapping. When I import any Wavefront OBJ object, I can use the UV, and it works perfectly (as it should). I can use Spacial Mapping... which is "okay" for some uses, but not many...

But not one of the other mapping modes seems to work on this format! DXF Import, great! 3DS, Fabulous, LWO, of course....

But not Wavefront OBJ!

Now, does anyone know

1, WHY that is?

2, does anyone know the best way to solve it?

<-----could just use better planning on imported models... but really doesn't like using other formats than OBJ

Just a shot in the dark here, but could it maybe have anything to do with each patch or polygon of the imported object being seperate from the rest?

Hmmm how bizarre :hmm:

Me thinks Kai will know this one :)

Don't think that's the problem, FXG.

I think it may have something to do with Wavefront OBJ's grouping protocols, which have two separate layers, object and material, but Cinema can have more layers than that so it shouldn't really be an issue...

hmmm not sure off hand, could you send the file and I'll have a look at it. I haven't had issues myself with importing obj, actually that is the format I always use. I have noticed OBJs can often come in from Max with really odd UV meshes, where although evenly distibuted on the mesh, are impossible to paint to as they are totally overlapped squaes, but thats not the issue.

YOu can send the file to kai@lucentdreams.zzn.com and I'll look at it. I think I remeber someone else saying the had the same issue not too long ago.

alright so now I am confused as to the actual issue at hand. I looked t the file, and I can place any of the projection maps on and they all work, though for the model provided, flat mapping and frontal mapping wouldn't make sense, but they apply to the object as expected. what is the actual issue, is it that thoe mapping modes were set when you exported but ddidn't import, or is it that you just can't get them to work. here is an image woth the following projections from left to right.

UV, Cylindrical, Spherical, Cubic, Frontal, Flat (note that these have a subdivision of 2 in hypernurbs.)

and yes I did attend 3Dark for many months, I was a moderator for the C4D forum and a few others, but I became busy and the forum died off, still running but just barely. I used kaiskai for a long time, and then I couldn't log in so I started using lucentdreams.

nope, just texted it. Hypernurbs or not, this object doesn't want to map except with UV.

Are you using C4D7.3 or 6.3

I remember you! Glad I found you again, you helped me out more than once over there.

BTW, you'll remember a guy K.illed B.efore O.pening C.redits :D
