Hi Dan,
by far the best ressource is www.plugincafe.com
There you can find the SDK and Documentation as well as a developer forum and the mail contact to Maxons SDK Support.

As srek already said, visit plugincafe for sdk doc and forum.
I don't know if you already know this, but you get the SDK with Cinema4D 8, all you have to do is goto your plugins folder and load up the visual c++ workspace and hit compile.
Its then your job to make something :)
If you want the sdk doc, visit http://plugincafe.com/developer_main.asp
Theres documentation for c++ and coffee, and be sure you visit the forum (and the archieved forum).
Theres not many c++ resources for c4d, but I know Astrofish (http://www.astrofish.com/) has a great tutorial to get up and running with the sdk (although its slightly old now, and the top part doesn't apply with 8.2)

I know it has been slightly updated in 8.5, you can use baselinks now.
Other than that, I don't believe its been all that much updated since version 6. the coffee docs are still for 6.3!
Its a shame really, I really think coffee and some potential if they work on it more, but i guess its not there top priority as theres already a c++ way to do it.

I believe that COFFEE should offer higher level functions. LISP oriented functionality would make it much more viable for the Cinema4D user base. Syntax such as "create cube" or "position cube at 100,0,0" would make COFFEE a true alternative to MEL or other scripting languages. Right now it only removes the compiler from the equation while maintaining many of the complications of C++. There should be an alternative to COFFEE, say 'JUICE'.
Best Regards,
