View Full Version : Pond fluid effect (reflections)
Tom Lunzer 12-29-2003, 07:15 PM Does anyone know how to make the pond fluid effect reflect the surroundings?
I have a scene in which I want the pond to reflect the surrounding trees, grass, sky
and female model on its surface.

Try using a material with specular properties(Blinn, Phong, Anisotropic) and turn Raytracing on in your render globals.

but if you do that then you lose the pond surfacing
a pond is a fluid affect and dependent on those fluid properties to render
when i apply a blinn or what ever it makes it invisable
im thinking the only way to do this is to convert to polys but then its not going to animate

Exactly the problem I was talking about. I could do as you say, convert the pond to a mesh after I get the ripple effect I want, since the final product is for a still image not an animation. But I would still like to know if there is a way to get a reflective serface in an animated pond?

i tried it but i couldnt get it to work
i tried a ocean affect to make it look like a small pond and it doesnt have the quailitys that a pond does when you have a wake and all that going,it just doesnt look the same
i was thinking blend shapes from the convert fluids to polys but man you'd have to one for every frame to get that same fluid look that the pond has so i dont think thats a good idea at all

Maybe you could make your own pond with a plane and a couple of wave deformers.

Just use an ocean you can get the exact same ripples etc as a pond and you get the ocean shadder :)

Thanks Kabab (and everyone) the Ocean shader will work if I adjust the scale and num frequencies etc, it looks like a still surface (such as a pond on a windless day) and I can get it to reflect by increasing the reflectivity in the Specular shading slot.
Create a boat object and then add a wake effect and I have the slight ripple (as the girl enters the water)and I should have the end result I need.

Do a search on wake there was a great discussion on how the wake emitter works with Duncan and what attributes to play with to get good results, its worth taking a look at..
