I put together a simple expressions explanation here for controlling gun muzzle flashes (I'll do a more detailled one in PDF format soon for my website, but for now...)

http://forums.newtek.com/discus/messages/2/18610.html?

As for tracer fire - You can get some pretty good effects with just plain old PFX emitters and Hypervoxels (and even link the emitter to the expression as well if you wanted to). Whats nice is you can also parent a child emitter to the emitter, and use collision to generate dust impacts (bullet hits wall, bullet generates a puff of dust)

Likewise, you can also use PFX for ejecting empty shells. I've done this using simple HV sprites... I think you'll find that there's a post online here at CGTalk on this particular topic if you do a search...

This question has been asked many times, I think a search would help you more. ;)

But any way... for gun fire... check out some examples I have on my site:

http://mapage.noos.fr/samuelLK/Resources.html

They can help you get started. (Scroll down a bit.)
