Hey all:
I've been learning and playing with the particles. I thought this was a fun little project file. I'm really impressed by the little things that may get unnoticed, like particle ID. I foresee great things with the ability to track a single particle.

Here's the project file:

Play with the damping to slow it down over time.
Play with internal pressure to change the overshoot of the twirl.

Pretty cool Matt. Too bad messiah particles won't transfer to lightwave.

has anyone ever done any rendering with messiah's particles?

Hey, this is freaking cool!
I never played with particles much so far, and it seems that there's a lot more power in them than I thought...
Have to play with that scene now - thanks!

Cool, glad you have time to play with it.
I'm looking for a way to attach objects to the particles. For example, a duplicated polygon with an animated surface. Like the sprites used for the Balrog in The Fellowship of the Ring.

I'm not too worried about rendering in LW as the moment, because I can't render the particles in Studio. Any clues? Lyle?

I'll keep digging.

You can attach any object to the particles through the "slave parent" - make a null and parent e.g. a cloned polygon, or sphere or whatever, cloned as many times as the number of particles you want. Select the parent null under slave parent, that's it :) I don't know why the menu is grayed out when object points is selected, but you can switch to cone, select your slave and switch back to object points ;)

As for rendering in LW, as soon as you attach objects to the particles in messiah, you can of course also export them to LW and render them there - you even attach and export just nulls and render them as hypervoxels in LW :)

Thanks Maks, I'm doing it right now!

Now if there where a script that lets you connect multiple objects at the same time to LW with the HostConnect command, so you can export e.g. 1000 nulls at a time to LW, that would be cool! Anyone? :p

Or to whatever host app is being used. Yeah, that would be great!

After switching back to "Object Points" mode, I lose the object that was formerly attached with "Cone" Mode; permanently. I need to restart my project in order to see the object again. Did I miss something here?

Ok, my first scripts, woohoo ;)
I managed to throw together 2 scripts for batch host connections, by copying bits and peaces from other scripts :p

The problem is, that you have to click ok each time that an object gets connected, wich can be rather annoying when you want to connect some hundreds or thousand nulls as particles... But I don't know if there's a way to get rid of this OK panel via scripting - any hint would be highly appreciated :)

Get them here: http://maks.free.fr/tech/maks_HostConnect_scripts.zip

Cheers,

Your working on my scene, right? Doesn't work here. I'll keep looking.

Here's your scene with nulls attached: http://maks.free.fr/temp/particlesTEST_maks.mpj

Maks, I'm having rotten luck right now. Your link isn't working.

EDIT: nevermind, I got it.

Hmm, I'm not sure though if connected particle objects work correctly in the host app... I tried it with a bunch of nulls, as well as with a bunch of objects, and they have a weird behaviour in LW, they dissapear temporarly, and the motion doesn't correspond to the motion in messiah... Further, even with just nulls, the RAM usage increases very quickly the more particle objects are connected.
So, rendering particles in the host app doesn't seem to be working correctly... Did you try it?

In messiah I noticed that you apparently can't bake the motion of objects attached to the particles - is this correct?

No, I haven't tried it yet. I'll do it this afternoon, and get back to you.

I haven't had much luck with the connection. LW completely distorted the ball, so some of the points of the ball were force to the origin. Weird. I'll try again.

Edit: Now the nulls won't load into LW. The animation of the ball is fine, but nothing else.

Edit 2: Now the nulls have disappeared in messiah, after toggling between Layout and messiah a few times. The first two toggle sit was fine, but then third or fourth toggle they disappeared.

I'm using Lightwave 7.5.
