View Full Version : Character wip and facial rig study
marioucci 12-28-2003, 02:08 PM Hello wavers,
i got my computer home now so i could make some facial studies in an old model of mine. it was modelled in wings and now i textured and rig it in LW.
I am using the facial method described in this forum by pixelranger to link my morphs to a null. i also added the bump map channel to the expression so when i use the controller null i activate the morph and also a specific part of the bump map.
heres a pic of some test renders. I only have 4 different specific morphs in the forehead. im waiting to finish the inner side of the mouth to continue with the morphs.
http://www.cbsp.com.br/3d/Pictures/Logan/cgtalk.jpg
and heres a screen shot of the rig frame and controller.
Thanks a lot Pixelranger for the scene and for the explanation of the method.

Please gimme comments and suggestions ok?
cheers and happy new year

That's a beautifully textured model! Once I get over how good it looks then I'll get to the rigging.....
weeeeee!!
Loggie is back to LW!
as usual.. great model! the textures looks really good!
the morphs are awesome.. fleshy
this method is really good for not to stretch the muscles in impossible directions
I would like to see how do u control the bumpmap
btw.. did u try with displacement maps for wrinkles or under bones?
I will hold on some questions for later.. :)
good to see u back! and happy new year!

Yeah, no kidding. I hope at some point I will be able to texture half that well....and wow, that modeling. :buttrock: I didn't understand pixelrangers methods, so I can't comment on your rig. Looks awesome to me. (the facial morphs, no idea about the rig itself technically)
great model and poses !
i like the "atmosphere" :)

very nice shading work.

Hey logan,
As usual, your model is fantastic.... The shader is veeeeeeery good too, but i think a little bit less red on the nose would be better... but may be it's the style...
The method you're using to make expressions seems to be very good and combining it with maps ( as you're doing ) it can be extremelly usefull, easy to animate and get very impressive results....
I think you should try to activate another diffuse map, as you are doing with bump....
Something similar was developed by the fellows at Esc Enterteinment ( supervised by George Borshukov ) and used on Matrix Reloaded ( and Revolutions also )... But in that case, bump and difuse are animated....
You can see what i'm trying to explain in this link (http://www.virtualcinematography.org/)
Thanx... And keep posting :p

Hey loggie!!!!
Awesome work!!!
the rig looks pretty cool too.. could u show us some tests with the rig maybe? ;D
Love the texturing, specially the nose and cheek areas!! :surprised
Aaaaaas for critics.....
the ears looks a bit too bright, you could maybe follow a bit of the cheeks color and the redness of the nose
the morphs are ****ing cool!!! specially the animated bump map that follows them ;)
i really really really like the "eye bags" on the last 2 morphs... perfect =D
and i totally agree with filipe.. u could have them control the diffuse map as well..
i dont know if theres any need in making various different diffuse maps.. i guess u can have a good result with weight maps adding some extra fractal colors on different places depending on the morph...
like making the skin reddish when pressed hard at a spot
something that bothers me a bit are the eyes... cant see any texture, specially on the iris...
anndd. last thing... this character looks exactly like u!!! even the red nose ! =P
anndd.. thats it =)
****ing awesome!!!!
but it took an awefull while till u "had the time" to show us something ¬_¬
keep posting.. let us

Heyas guys,
Thanks a lot for the great replies.
I totally agree with you and im working to fix the areas u mentioned.
The eyes need a lot of work yet.
The ears need some textures. so far its only shaders.
Im gonna use some animated gradients to make some areas reddish when morphed for sure.
What im most focused now is to create corrective morphs to each combination in a way that when 2 or more morphs are reaching 100%, it activates the corrective morph to avoid problems(thanks to Daniel PK and Bay raitt for the explanations about it.)
anyways, this is another set of tests without the fixin morphs so u can see problems happening when i have some combinations.
cheers mates

This is looking great already, the attention to detail is great, the introduction of wrinkles within some face morphs is such a neat touch...
Just wish some areas were lightened up a bit to show off some more details, oh and why did you model in wings ???

Fantastic work and killer expressions! the red nose bothers me a bit, but if you have the nose like thatas someone said, well I'm totally wrong!!!
I find the trick of null linked to bump map cool. very cool.
Very Cool model
the joystick method of face rigging is excellent I've done afew myself here's alittle list of what i've been using for endomorphs to Joystick layout, i found this works well for lip scyn and expression mixing This is a working list so changes are always going on, its only a guide :D
Hope it helps :D

Man, that is some awesome work. I check out your site from time to time and I am simply amazed at your skill. Your modeling is top notch.
Using the on screen controls for facial rigging/animation has always facinated me
I hope that some either you or T4D will create a tutorial for us lesser skilled character riggers to learn.

Excuse for the dumb question
Is there some way to record the movement of the controller null?
Some option like in AE or Particle Illusion in that you can move an emitter in the screen and to record that movement in real time?
We can do this in LW???
Gerardo
Umm you uses a standard null for the center of the control ...
so it animates like anything else in Lightwave ;)

Looks pretty good logan.
*overly-simplied sub-D models?*
Would someone please explain to me? I must stupid because that comment went right over my head. What is an overly-simplified sub-D model?

Hey Mário,
I just took a trip to your site to check out your other works. Very, very, nice examples there especially in the XSI category! Looks like you're got a pretty good range covered from the lo poly sub-d to the hi poly count for the extra detail. including some very cool texture work and interesting morphs as well.
Super work!

I think that comment came from the 1st screenshot shown, just the sub-D level shown in the viewport at a very low level, maybe level 1 ?!?!?!
Chewey
01-09-2004, 04:32 PM
No, it wasn't referring to Mário's work.
Simply referring to the difference in modeling approaches that you see here within the Lightwave forum. Some are more detailed and others are intentionally less complex for effect. Mário's work here shows more detail and capability for a range of realisitic experession due to it.

Heyas guys,
Thanks very very much for the feedback on this.
Its been hard to re-learn lightwave and ur comments really helped me to keep up.
Chewey,
Thank you for your comments man.
I know you since the time i was using lightwave before so it means a lot to me:)
Samartin,
i did it in wings because i was using wings by the time i did it. then i moved to xsi and did a bit more of it in xsi, now im using LW so i finished it in lw... pheww... i should stop moving apps lol.
Heyas Trav,
Nice to hear from u again man... Yeah!! its cold here haha!!!
T4D,
Thanks a lot for the explanation man!!!!!
I am now working very hard on the deformation aspects of the scene so i wont be touching the texturing for a while(still loads to do on it) . This is a first test of the eye deformation.
Lemme know what u think ok?
Im using another tip from pixelranger (thanks again mate) so im using 2 bones to deform the skin around the eye. one controls the eyeball and the other control the skin with a small weight map. the skin bone follows the eyeball bone with a lil less power. I still have to work on the weight map thou to make the lower part of the eye to be a lil smooth.
Anyways, please lemme know what u think ok?
PS> im gonna rework the soecular map in the under eye skin:)
cheers

Awesome! This is just getting better and better. :buttrock:
I love the results you have achieved with the eyelid bones!
What you could also do is link a bump map with a white circle/disk on it to the eye bone so that when he's moving his eyeballs with his eyes shut you can see the "displacement" from the cornea moving under it. Very unlikely that you would need it but if he's going to have his eyes shut for a short time it could raise the reality factor to even higher than it is now (it thats possible).
Keep it up!

Hello Loggie,
it`s great work, and welcome back to LW. Would you mind to share with us your skin shading technique and your light setup? It`s nice to learn from such a studies like this.
One more question, how do you proceed with Metagons site?

bwt i´m curently reading "stop staring- facial modeling and animation done right" awesome book by the way. i haven´t come that far thou, don´t have much time to read these days. but for all who want to learn this type of method i can highly recomend this book, it´s written with maya in mind but the technique is aplicable to LW too.

That's friggin awesome! Would've said so earlier, but I was in a "kick@ss-3d-supremacy" induced coma. Just woke up from it.
And I definitely have to agree with loganarts and mrwyatt. Stop Staring should be considered required reading if you're doing facial animation. There's about a million little things that Jason Osipa goes over in the book that you don't think about. The eyelids following the eyes for example. I didn't even realize that my eyes did that until I got that book.
Anyway, loganarts: Great model, great texture, rig looks great. This'll be front page in no time.
