I've got the strangest problem imaginable, which i really think is a software conflict. Basically what happens is no matter what user, the first user to log into my machine cannot use open gl, hence lightwave doesnt work, video games based in open gl dont work. Its really kind of counter productive. However if i log out and log in again with the same user open gl magically starts to work once again, or i could stay logged in with the first account and log in with any other user using windows xp's fast user switching. After the initial login open gl works fine, tho it is a little glitchy. Random objects become semi transparent etc.

So intially to see if it was software i reformatted and all was well, until a month ago when the problem returned. No idea why, so i figured maybe it was hardware so this is what i did:

First i switched the video card out problem presisted
then i unplugged all non essential hard ware (extra hard drives, controller cards) basically the os hard drive and the video card were the only things left plugged into the mobo aside from ram and cpu. The problem presisted.

So then i was even more puzzled. I swapped out the cpu. nothing. So i really think this is software since the only thing left to replace in the system is the motherboard and ram. But why would the problem return after the format? musta been a driver or something.. i dont know any clues as to what would cause this?

here's my setup:
Athlon XP 2100+
1 GB DDR 400 ram
Geforce4 ti 4800 (Its actually the 4600 agp 8x)
EpoX 8RDA+ (nforce2)

No overheating: temps idle/full are 30/35 degrees C

any idea what i could do aside from another reformat?

what Nvidia Display drivers are you using?

What nforce drivers are you using....

when the problem first surfaced.. i was using the 52.03 dets so i've tried down grading to the 45.23 dets after i cleaned out hte previous drivers, then i tried the latest dets off nvidia's site.. nothing either..

as for the nforce drivers.. they're the 3.13 ones.. i think they have been all this time.. or at least before this problem ever occurred..

interesting thing happened tho to start all this off..

i was installing linux.. and open gl wasnt working in linux, for some reason or another the epox bios version i had just didnt cooperate with linux, but i found a place online where someone had the same problem and it was fixed by a simple bios update.. so i updated mine and lo and behold linux started working flawlessly :) boot into windows.. and open gl is messed up there. So i think alright easy fix.. i rolled back the bios to the original that shipped with the board.. and while linux did what i thought it would (open gl stopped working :P) windows persisted... which leads me to believe the problem was already there (plus it had shown other signs.. random games dependant on open gl would crash alot or have strange errors.. (invisible walls un rendered objects) so im fairly certain its probably got something to do with software.. what i dont know maybe i could have a bad mobo even.. who knows the problem there is i'd have to install a new one to find out.. and that calls for a reformat.. and if the problem returned it would be a few months before that happened again (like the last time i formatted to get rid of this problem)

so i dont know if thats even worth it :P

anyway thx for any input if any of you have some :) then maybe i can get back to improving my lightwaving skill :P

Maybe look more into the Linux issue. I assume you are using some Linux bootloader (like Lilo or Grub), maybe it does something to the videocard or AGP bus on boot. I'm getting some strange visual artifacts when the windows XP videocard driver loads on my dualboot machine that I haven't had before Linux (it's a Matrox card though) so I assume there's some connection. Are you using autologin in windows? (which windows is that anyway?) Maybe there's something in bios setting you could adjust...

Another possibility would be that your original bios settings were different from default and you've reset them by flashing...

well the linux boot loader shouldnt have any effect on that type of thing.. it merly tells which bootable partition to boot from.. and in either case since the reformat i've been too lazy to reinstall the boot loader to have linux bootable again.. so i've been using the windows boot loader straight up anyhow..

as for the bios settings.. i have already set them to the same thing they were at before the flash..

If the problem straightened up after a system wipe, then reappeared, it is software related. You need to figure out what keeps getting put on that machine to make it break.

well its definately gotta be something recent.. because i didnt have this problem for about 5 or 6 months after i built the hting..

probably going to reformat the thing anyhow and start fresh.. and slowly install one thing at a time .. etc
