erm... ok, ok, after rereading the thread, I see what you mean! :surprised:
It should not cost over 200$, but I don´t want something... bad!? Bah, It´s hard for me to explain it in english, so I´ll post a german description and hope someone can help me! :hmm:
So... Hoffe ein Deutschler liest des! Ein Weihnachtsbesäufniss kann am nächsten Tag schwerwiegende Auswirkungen haben!! :D

I am also wondering this same question. I used one tablet before, and it was not a wacom ( I used it about.... twice). I am now using an optical mouse for 3d and photoshop work.
I have noticed that wacoms are all highly recommended, but am wondering why?
Are they that reliable?
Are they that easy to use?
What kind/size do you recommend?
I went to the site, and it recommended an Intuous for me. Does that even sound right?
Can I use these things for 3D work?
Pardon me if I sound a bit on the naive side, but I would rather ask questions of my peers than trust a site that is looking to sell something.:D
Thank You!!!

I've had 2 wacom's, a graphire which is a small, inexpensive beginner's tablet, and now i have a big intuos. I liked the graphic (except that it was too small) and haven't really tried out the new one, but I've never had problems with wacom's tablets and find them very useful. They have pressure sensitivity and the pens are really nice. The graphire tablet also comes with a mouse.

The main reason I use a tablet is for painting texture maps. For that purpose, a tablet is much better than a mouse, IMO.
I've had two Wacom tablets (an ArtPad II and a Graphire 2), and I've liked both. Some advantages of Wacoms over other brands are:
1. The pen doesn't need batteries. Some other brands do need them.
2. Driver support is very good. Wacom continues to issue driver updates even for their older tablets.
3. Applications such as Photoshop and Painter are written to work well with Wacom's tablets.
The downside is the price.
There are some other brands of tablet, like GTCO CalComp (http://www.calcomp.com/), which are marketed to the CAD industry, and Aiptek. You may want to check their websites as well.

one thing that I noticed when comparing wacoms with other brands is margin of error. certain other brands that were much cheaper but supposedly had better resolution, when you looked at their margin of error it was 3x or more what the wacoms were.

For a person just starting out in digital painting, would you suggest a 6x8 graphire or a 6x8 intuos? The price difference seems to be about $150 in my area. Thank you in advance.

I also thank you for your feedback. You have been very helpful.
I have to tell you this though...
So, last night, my dear sweet boyfriend brings out that tablet that I never used, and says 'why don't you try this again?'.
I say, yeah sure, go ahead. I figure maybe it was a user problem(too dumb to use it). He plugs it in our brand new Alienware Area 51 computer, then tries to turn it on.
Computer does not turn on.
Boyfriend starts cursing at tablet, throws tablet away.
ending of story, computer is fixed, and I am probably getting an Intuous.
:D
hoi!
