I recently upgraded my system for a 2.8Ghz P4HT and when I
render on maya and watch the task manager the CPU never
cross the 50% usage...

whats happenning????? thats weird!

and BTW, the task manager on XP shows 2 little screens, like
i am on a dual workstation.... if anyone can post some screen
shots of their screen using a p4HT system will help me..

please show me the light... ;)

Sometimes just because the task manager isn't all spiked out at 100% (both cpu's) doesn't mean the system isn't working to its full potential.

Is there some sort of mulithreaded on/off switch in maya?

You could always try rendering with HT off, and then with HT on to see which is faster.

Just a restart and a bios change away.

Greg, you should know better!

Groff: what task were you doing when it showed 50% cpu usage? A HT system splits the cpu into 2 virtual cpus, this means if you are using a single threaded program or feature then the most your little task manager graph will show is 50%. This is 100% of cpu1 and 0% of cpu2.

This does NOT mean your system is only using half of its power, it means it is using 100% of its processing power, but you are not getting any benefit from the HT feature. You usually get this when you render with a crap renderer or when you use a feature which cannot be split up, such as the editor 3D view, radiosity rendering etc.

To test, go to www.cinebench.com and run all the tests. The realtime views should cap out at 50%, the first rendering should also be limited to 50%. The final test uses multiple cpus/HT and should show a cpu usage of 100%.

The bottom line is dont worry about it, you cpu uage is not 50% (even though it says so) But as Gregs says, check if there are any thread/cpu options in your app.

holy freaking hell...

thanks for te info dudes, i was beginning to kick the vendor

Greg, you should know better!

Know better what? Whosit?

I'm on vacation! And there WAS a multiprocessor checkbox too! See I knew it!

Eat that crumbcake, Sockpuppet man! :)

I'd show you a graph explaining the "full potential" goodness...but I can't seem to find the image.

All I can seem to find is this.

And then I forget what I'm doing.

What forum is this again?

:surprised
