wats the best way to connect them * by the way im using 3dsmax and backburner *
do i use a router or join em up using one comp as a server? or doesnt it matter?

You don't need a server. Use whatever is easier for you. You can use a router (best if you have a broadband connection), a switch (best if you use dialup), a hub or a crossover cable. Then just read the backburner help files and discreet support page. It's very simple. Just watch the network paths for materials and stuff like that. It's all in the help files.
