Hi everyone.

I've scanned a couple of pages worth of threads and can't find this, but apologies upfront if this gets asked a lot!

I'm taking on my first serious character in max, I've modelled a variety of things in the past year or so, and am reasonably OK with the tools, however the character is starting to look half-decent and I'm thinking about setting up some sort of bones or rigging system so that I can pose her, and possibly animate further down the line.

Problem is I'm self-taught, so all information I have is picked up form various forums and tutorials, and have no clue where to start, what the procedure is etc

Any suggestions on how to go about rigging a character (if that's the right terminology) or links to online resources?

I'm using Max version 4.

Thanks in advance....

but i'm not sure..
Ever heard of bones's in max?
well I don't know the name and I'm not in max right now and won't get near it soon so I try to explaplain and then you cabn find it yourself.
At first under help rolout menu in the top bar you have a tutorials.
there you have to look under charcter animation and they tell you how to make bones.
then make the bones asif they should be the bonés of your character and then animate the bones. if you have done this put the bones with the animation bar (under in the screen)at 0 so your bones's are in the same position as the moddeled charcter is. then use the skin tool. now select envelope and you should eddit all the bone's to it. I can't tell but will be exlained. if done select a bone and the mesh around the bone will chance collor as if the center is really hot and the further of the bone the color get yellow ntill it ends up in blue as you whole character must be by then. it gets. this is the area on which the bone has influance.
Note:>> that you add the skin tool to you character not the bones'.<<

I hope this is a bit clear but the tutorial in max itself should explain.

Goodluck

Hi

Thanks for the reply, just had a look, and as you say tutorial11 is all about setting up a bones system.

I looked thru the manual but could not fnd this for some reason, but I'd forgotten about the tutorials in the help :)

I'll see how I go with it, might post some renderings if I get it working and if it doesn't suck too hard

Cheers

hey guys, i found the original website where i found the tutorial earlier this year, its max character shop, i linked to it through Mike COmets website, unfortunately that web site is down, i checked it out this morning, Yahoo wond let me send the PDF, its too big, so i have to send zipped word file, it still has color pics. so i will continute doing that for those who need it. for those of you who got it already enjoy email me at technoid7@yahoo.com if you need the tutorial
40 pages of fun(again, it wasn't written by me)

Cant you just put it somewhere on the net? it would make things easier for both you and the ones who want it :)

(but if you wouldn't mind, you could please send it to my email -> glass@brevet.nu, thanks)

As Reality3d said, it's already on the net. It's Sergio Mucino's tutorial and is very helpful.

Thanks LFShade, but I get a "no thread specified" with the link. I'll do a search and see.
