The render is very embarrasing. :(

This is my very first attempt at modelling a head, I dont know how the lips work out but some day I will get there.

I would like to keep this thread up, I need everybody's help in progress of building this head. The wireframe looks as if the model should be perfectly smooth, but when I add a mesh smooth (2 literations) it still dosent really help out much.

And I need some tips on rendering, alot of these threads have awesome renders of plain grey faces but look so awesome.

Suggestions?

Thanks - Nick.

To me the side of the head looks a little square, it kinda needs to be a bit more round and that, so it looks less "pulled back" good first try though :) the topology seems to be nice and workable, i guess you just need to tweak it a bit to get it to look a bit better...
As for lighting, id try a few different lights around the model in slightly different shades, seems to make images seem a bit nicer, although im a bit of a noob, so i wouldnt really trust me...

She's a good start! It seems although that you haven't been following the reference exactly, as the ears are a bit wider, the neck is farther back, as well as the head will be rounder in the back(picture a skull, how it curves down to meet the back of the spine). Here are a few good modelling resources that got me started:

http://www.zoorender.com/

Also, have a look at the many many modelling threads. Regardless of which program you're using, poly-modelling is essentially the same. Also, for further reference, study artist anatomy books to familiarize yourself with the commonalities of the human figure, ie relationship of bone, muscle & skin, as well as the landmark dips & bumps their relationship has.

Keep it up!

not a bad start at all for modeling a head for the first time.

some basic tips that might help would be...

youre using reference in the backround which is good...but make sure to line up the proportions of the face images in photoshop first...as you can see youre lining up the model to the front view but the side view picture is too small... which in turn messes up proportion. (dont be afraid to just model in the perspective view with out the backround reference to see what you get...its the only way you learn...i mean you see faces everyday. its good to have reference but when youre working in 3d ..2d reference is only good for proportions.)

another small tip..is start out with the least amount of geometry possible while you block in the main shape and topology flow.

keep it up!

Ok guys, I took your word of advice. It is getting there:

I can already see that I obviously need to form the shape of the jaw..

I am starting to use this as a reference:

the nose has no inward curve in it like a womans nose should, its straight like a mans. The jaw is also too big for a womans face. The top lip is also bigger than the bottom lip, and usually its the other way around.
