With the ever growing demand for Linux applications, I would like to find out if we can run and use Maya 3.0/4.0 NT version on Linux. I know that there is a Linux version of Maya, but also have heard that some Windows applications do work on Linux. If so, How is it done?

Does anyone have answer to this.
:)

Yep, they make Maya for Linux....Redhat, I believe. Check A|W's site.

Well there are some windows emulators for Linux (Don't ask me where, I don't have linux), but those aren't too reliable nor fast, so working with Maya NT version trough those would be quite pain in the arse to tell you the truth... forget it I'd say.

You may be able to get Wine to run a windows version of Maya on linux, but I doubt it, it's a very complex program. Even if you did get it to run it would be slow(incredibally slow) and rather buggy.

Besides all that, why would you even want to run a windows version on linux!? The linux versions is great, has the same features as maya for windows, and runs on virtually all linux distro's. Though you'll only get support if you tell them you use RedHat.

Hi All

Thanks a lot.

I have heard a lot about Maya being faster on linux. So I thought, I might find a way to run the Windows version on it, than to get one for Linux itself. I agree with you guys, as it can be real painstaking to get the stuff up and running and all you find out, is that it under-performs. But I'm still checking Lindows as per Brian's recommendation. Let me check that!!.

Thanks to you all. You have been great!!:wavey:

Just yesterday I saw this article on cgchannel.com that Disney is switching to Linux, and it also said that ILM already use it, and ILM is using Maya. So yes Maya should work on Linux, just don't ask me how :p

Do you know VmWare ?
An emulator for windows and linux to run Linux on windows and windows on Linux .

http://www.vmware.com

I tried the v 3.0 and i don't know if the v3.1 support OpenGL acceleration ( the v3.0 doesn't support it ) .
If someone is interested for the 3.1, tell me.
