View Full Version : Animating a pen problem
Arthur Dent 12-22-2003, 09:06 AM Hi everyone!
I want to animate a pen who draws on paper.
The pen slides over a spline (drawing) by path constrain controller. Is there a way to make pen leave a trail on the paper with standart 3ds max tools or plugin, maxscript?
Thank you in advance;)

You could try, with a quite dense paper surface mesh... apply a pArray to emit from vertices based on a volume select which moves along with the nib of your pen. The volume select defines the vertices which will emit the 0 velocity particles which will stay on the surface of the paper.

Doing that with particles might kill your rendertime. You might be able to make that spline renderable and use a top bottom material and animate the mix.

you could do it pretty easy with gost trails (http://www.snotmonster.com/). Make another spline to resemble the shape of the ink, link it to the end of your pen, apply gt to the new spline, make the number of frames the same as the total lenght of your animaiton (so the writing does not disappear) and then adjust the segments so that it will have enough segs to make all of the curves of your lettering. Then you can apply a material to the trail to make it look right.
should be pretty easy.

Thanks guys! PArray method works:) Even with animated percent along path... I will try Ghost Trails. Thanks again
