View Full Version : Character: Child
Eagle_e7 12-22-2003, 02:54 AM Hi all. :)
I'm working on a character for a short film right now, I'm aiming for a 5-8 year old boy. Hands and feet still to be made at the moment, but here he is so far:

And a close-up of the head:

The eyes in there are just simple spheres with a shader at the moment, I'll need to model them properly soon. :)
Any comments would really help, thanks! :)

it's hard to tell with this view, but it looks like the ears might be a little too high up, or possibly too far back on the head. But with this view, it's really hard to see for sure.
Maybe you could post a front and side view, and possibly a wireframe as well.
The eyes/eyelids etc. look really good. The lips look like they could use a little more defining, but it really depends on what you're aiming for. They're pretty good as is.
The nose looks odd and the face is too flat.
Keep it up.

Great start. Add some shape around the temple area also. Should help to add some shape and make his head look less spherical.
Next update add some more light so it is easier to see.

I, for one, love it the way it is. gives me the feeling of naivety. still, a little more definition of the bones around the eyes should help. and perhaps some more definition of the cheeks would make him seem more boyish.

The model is almost done now with the exception of a few small tweaks.
Here is the front and side view requested. :)

I see what you mean about the nose, i'll see if I can fix it up. :)

whoa, he looks a LOT like a kid I really know. I think he's about 12.

first off, the difference between a kid of 5 and a kid of 8 is huge. at 5 years, i think they are still quite chubby, puppy fat and all that. towards 8, they become more shapley, losing the fat, and gradually looking more teenage-like.
the upper body looks too long to me, i think the shirt and crotch need to be raised. looking at the feet, they look much older, i think they need to be less shapely, fewer tendons showing. the nose to me looks odd, too wide generally, and a bit too pointy at the end. his head looks too wide from the front view and the jaw bone a bit too pronounced, maybe im, wrong i dont know.
its strange, once he has a skin and hair, he looks much older.

Your model does look a bit older than what you said you're going for, 5-8 year's old, right? My illustrator's photo reference book has a good example of the differences you'd see in a boy about 5-7 years old versus one that's 8-10. I've posted a quick example so you can see what I mean.
Obvious difference are pretty much like what random.hero stated.
Might reconsider how you've got the ears set on the head? At his age they should probably be larger and not quite so far back...

Nice going,
but the eye is a bit off to me... don't know what exactly..
but it seems too shiny and the pupils looks a bit too big??
Maybe just me..
But nice job!

Guys I can't thank you enough for your amazing suggestions. It really is a huge help. :)
I've given him a few tweaks to attempt to give him a younger look:

The eyes still need some fixing. But he's gradually nearing completion.:)

he does indeed look a few years younger. However, I still think that he would benefit greatly from more defined cheekbones.

I've put some more work into him:

Here's a larger version so you can see him a little better.

He's almost done now, still needs a few tweaks here and there though. :)
