This is a wip of a genetic infantryman inspired from the War Machine issue of Heavy Metal. I have modified him to my taste.
He is slated to be textured, rigged, and posed.

Please give me some input before I finalize his design and proportions.

Really nice model! The legs seem unfinished compared to the rest of the model though. Is that the case or are the blocky areas part of the design of the character?

It seems that you are pretty much done.. But it needs that final touch. Like for example his shirt looks mirrored (which I presume it is). And the pants def. need some more polys’.
It might just be me but his feet seem a bit small (ohh well you said you were going to finalize his proportions.
Looking forward to seeing the final result :D

allenatl: Thanks dude! You're right about the legs. I'm still going to add some wrinkles and some straps wrapping around his right leg attached to his pistol holster. This model is also unsmoothed. I'll post one smoothed version when Maya 5 decides to smooth correctly. I've been having issues.

McSpirit: Yea, right now everything is mirrored besides the pants. The pants will get more love soon! The feet might look a little small in this pic. I've had someone else say that to. I'll post some more views for comparison.

Thanks Hexodam! I'll post a render of the back soon. I'm still working out the details in that area at the moment. Until then here are a couple of wireframe shots from the front and back.

I think you've done a terrific job and have an excellent model to work with but you have slacked off on the detail in certain areas.

Both his pants and his arms lack the details that you have incorporated into the rest of the model (ie. chest area). Try to balance him out a little better. I'll give some suggestions.

Add zipper, seams and pockets to pants. Create seperate geometry for knee padding that mimics style of shoulder pads.

Rework the boots. Add steel toe plates and improve the laces. Beef up the toe area more.

Fix torn undershirt. Right now it is symetrical with the other arm. Either remodel that piece or rotate, invert and scale one side to make it look different then the other.

Add shape to arms. Now I am really getting picky. They are fine the way they are, by all means, but maybe a little extra muscle would be nice. Some definition around the elbow area and some veins.

Uhh....yeah...that is good for now. I love to crit but can't do any better myself. Keep up the good work! :)

Thanks LowJack! Great feedback! I'm still a little stuck on the arms. I really want to bring out the muscles in his forearms, bicept, and shoulder regions, but I don't want to overdue it and give it that "hey I'm cg!" look.

Good crit on the pants. I'll start adding pockets and stuff.

I'll mess with the boots more. I didn't want to do your typical scifi marine with these huge boots that are everywhere. In real life there's no way in hell anyone would be able to be move quickly in combat. I would like to keep the design of the boots light and good for running. Almost like Nike made them for the military.

I'll keep at it. My technique is to start rough and detail down. I'm almost at the detail point now and I need some fresh eyes.

The arms are a tough one and I know what you mean. You almost want to texture it first to see what kind of results you get before you add unnecessary geometry.

With the boots, it almost seems as though you can see his toes through the front. That was what I was trying to say. I like your idea though. Uuuuhh....doH! There is a movie with Benicio Del Toro and Tommy Lee Jones about an elite soldier who goes rogue. Totally brain-farted on the name of it. It is a relatively new release on video. Anyway! My point is that there are some shots of their shoes in that movie. Almost like muck-lucks! Smooth soled soft boots designed for stealth. Maybe pull some concept designs from that?

I think your model is pretty awesome. How far are you going to take it on the details?

Keep posting it here so we can see the progression.

The Hunted. Great movie, LowJack!
As for the arms, misterboogie, looking at this character makes me think of Arnie's team in the Predator movie. They all had bulging, muscular arms which sort of gave the feeling of bigger-than-life heroes. So the muscle detail would give it that extra coolness factor but it's strictly a matter of preference. I can understand not wanting to take it too far.

LowJacK: As soon as I get some time I'm going to check out this movie The Hunted. Sounds like it's pretty cool! I'll work on some more ideas for his boots. That seems to be a pretty common crit.

allenatl: Actually that's something I pulled alot of inspiration from. Good eye!

You're right about the bulging muscle thing. It does add to the character if done right. These guys are pretty much clones, so they're pretty young. I kinda wanted to portray them as young, smart, and fast. Willing to die for their unit. I thought that adding too much muscle would take away their youth. I want him to look like he's in his early twenties.

Thanks Allen. I could have gone to imdb but was lazy and couldn't think of it.

It isn't the best movie, kind of far fetched with a weak plot but there is some coolness in a couple of scenes.

spm: Yes, you are right! Heavy Metal also did a special collectors edition in 1993. Thats how I found out about Rogue Trooper. Great comic!!

Still pushing to finish this guy. Here are the latest screen shots.
I'm still in the process of adding wrinkles and other details.

I like it alot though I cannot put my finger on what doesnt fit. You put a lot of detail into his upper torso and I sort of wonder why? Are you thinking of a scantily clad version? Any way I think maybe its the configuration of his load bearing pack ( his vest) that doesnt look right. You might try looking at some army surplus web sites for ref. pics. Other than that it looks really good.

Hey, Thanks for posting!

After I finished building the head and neck I couldn't stop until I had built just about all of him. Then I decided I wanted to do something more than just an anatomy study. Something more than just flesh.

I'm keeping the torso for another project. Right now there's no torso underneath the soldiers vest and shirt. I deleted it and left only the head and arms.

I'll work on the pack thing. Thanks for the input!

That is an awsome model!
Only thing that drew my eye was the kinda loose looking shoulder-straps on his backpack. Over the shoulders they look ok but then they curve towards the middle and then looks like they hanging limp when they leave his torso.

Are you going to continue the modeling in the Rough Trooper-world? Doing eight-ball and rest of the bunch to? That would be awsome! =)

Wow...great job!! Can't wait 2 c it textured!

Bangladesh: Thanks dude! His straps are still kinda thrown in there at the moment. I'll work on them more. Just need to find some good reference. Good eye!
I am planning on duplicating this model to create the rest of the gang. You can't have a war with only one guy!!

in your sofa: He,he. Hopefully I can get to texture him. I am planning on it. First pass on the head isn't too far away.

Good good model.

My only crit if any i think the gears are not randomly placed. some straps are too loose, the torso area is well packed but seems like belts and pockets dont deform like a real soldier would have those. (do you kinda see where im going at ?)

Overall its a full well done mesh.
