sorry for my negative input
but the lamborghini looks terrible.

is this a modelling challenge?
as the part with the highest poly count are the tires:
53k polys each tire
2,5k for the main part of the chassis

i wouldnt use this model even for a backplate

kind regards

Sorry for the point guys, but the Lambo looks terrible !!!
Can't be useful for a challenge !! And if it seems to look at the Aventador, we are far far away of an Aventador !!
The Pontiac's great BTW.

Yeah the lambo is not good, the other one is much better but there s a fair bit of problem with it.
Anyway I did a quick render for fun.
I m not sure if that s the right place where to post, let me know and I ll move it, cheers.

Probably my fault I didn't check the fbx export and I had meshsmooth applied to make a closeup
BTW you can see a rendering at my website
http://www.collectivedream.net/
it doesn't look too bad.
and it doesn't look like aventador because it's Reventon !

Still even yours renders are beautiful on the lambo, is there any possibilities to have another export ?

Hi,

I am getting read error on the Pontiac OBJ file.

Thanks,

grantmoore3d

I was also getting an error with the OBJ in Maya. However, it opened successfully in Blender and I then exported it as an FBX into Maya. I could share the file with Giorgio's permission.

jojo1975

of course ! I exported the obj and then re-imported it in max with no error :( I don't understand what is it.

Here s another test (looks pretty terrible), I really prefer the first one i did.
I ll try one with the lambo, once the files get sorted.

And that's why I had modelled with too many polygons the tires since also for me in max whre just istances :( If anyone would like to make a low poly tire and share it's no problem for me or you just can go for a high def close up ;)

Hi, can you smooth the cars (I've seen the Lambo only) two or three times in your modeling program and export in fbx/obj? The wheels are good but i have problems when applying smoothing to the geometry of the car.
Thank you very much.

@Jojo1975 I think the lambo might have had crease values applied that did not export.

jojo1975
06-04-2013, 08:49 PM
this is the max file I thought I had selected the edge and applied smoothing groups.
Keep in mind that the reventon is not curvy as the aventador.
Every feedback (helpful one) and help is very appreciated. ;) In the meantime try also the other challenges ;)

THEY NEED to be improved I know. But CONTRIBUTE instead of sterile critique.

Hello, I am new to this forum and really need to practice my lighting, compositing, and rendering. I don't really want my first post to be criticizing someone's work, but you asked for an honest critique. I probably couldn't model it any better, so no offense at all.

If you look at your model compared to a reference, you can more easily tell where there are issues. I drew blue lines over the reference that show the angles and edges that make the car look so sexy. In green, I attempted to draw those same lines with your edges.
http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/6743/k8.jpg

The basic shapes are the same, but it's the topology itself that needs some tweaking.

On the subject of lighting and compositing, I will post my renders when I have more to show!

thanks for the feedback, can you help in fixing the model and post a modified version ?

There are no strict rules about this challenge, just do your best to obtain a wonderful final image. You can post the final image in every forum you like, but please cite me for the modelling ;)

I m not entirely sure which is the best way to upload the model, but you could use dropbox put the file in the public folder and share the link, that's one way to do it i think.
Then to upload the render just use an external site like photobucket or imageshack, i like imageshack, than just past the link for the forum, and you should be good.

I have a question too, had anyone uploaded a new version of the Lambo that works now? I mean with topology that looks alright when you start smoothing it??

Cheers

Thought I'd have a crack at this. The car model needs work, the door lining up etc, and the issues on the bonnet. Had to fix quite a few things on it already.

Critiques welcome, as I feel there's still something missing.
Rendered in Octane Render.

Edit: Why does my image keep disappearing? Is a mod removing it?

Here is my First WIP. Im so excited about this model really gives the freedom for any angle. This is just a simple background image I used to get my materials right. I think its actually from a digital tutors lesson but I cant recall. Im going to find a more styleized background that I will take myself. I painted dirt and reflection masks in Mudbox. Rendered in Mental ray with a linear workflow. Still more texture detail to work out to get the look more realistic.

I'd love to finally take part in one of these challenges.

I'm by all means not a car expert but I'd have a question regarding the Pontiac model.
http://abload.de/img/pont015wpk3.jpg
http://abload.de/img/pont02uaqz7.jpg

The front part of the hood has this weird bump which kind of looks like it shouldn't be there.
This part looks odd on the user's renderings too in my opinion. I've looked trough different photographs on Google and it looks like this particular part is more straight and edgy.

I'm not sure whether it's just me, or something is indeed wrong.

Would be great if someone could elaborate on this.

@jameshodgart Thanks I really appretiate it.

I went back and fourth these last 2 days deciding the context that I composited this car into. Decided finally that I wanted to try out doing a miniature composite. So I went out and bought a 3 inch mirror ball and had some fun.

@deijardon Very good suggestion. Right now one of the main reasons Im not happy with the image is because the car is not modeled to be a toy car the details in the model are too perfect. I might need to remodel or approach different style. You're image is absolutely beautiful. I love how the car looks wet after a storm just broke. Really awesome.

@funkygfx Thanks I really appreciate it! Id love to see you get in this challenge as well, you freakin dominated the last architecture one.

@deijardon
I'm a fan of your composition. :)
Red and desaturated dark blue is very strong!
Did the photo came from you? Where did you find it, I'm interested! :D

@sumitCG
Did you work in linear? I have the impression you didn't.

No I'd did not take the photo. I did know that I wanted this particular angle and then I searched Google till I found and matching one. It helped as well because there was a car in it so I copied the lighting.

Here is the original images :)

Hey! Nice start. My biggest suggestion is to make the BG show up in the reflections on the top of the car, hood, etc. That will ground the model. Also the clear coat seems just a bit too strong. The forward facing reflections are really prominent and wash out the red color in the paint.

Really nice image deijardon!
As Preston already mentioned the wet carpaint looks awesome.
I like the perspective as well.
Canīt wait to see your next version with details fixed.

I also have a wip for this challenge, but Iīm not that happy with the result so far.
The backplate I chose isnīt perfect for the lamborghini cause the front view isnīt that spectacular...well I could have seen this coming......
Furthermore I just have the backplate, neither a HDR nor a reference car in the image.
I thought of it as a challenge, cause thatīs what this forum is all about right?

Plus my comp skills definatly need massive improvement ;)
Comments and ideas for improvements very welcome.
Hereīs my wip:

@funkygfx I know not having an HDRI of the scene is annoying but you did a pretty damn good job. Right now my eye is a little thrown because of the crispness of the car while the foreground has a very intense motion blur. Just an idea but maybe a harsh zdepth layer where the back of the car has some blur. You could even make a forward motionblur version of the car with key frames and add that blur in where appropriate. who knows how good that would look but its an idea.

Thanx for your suggestion , The sky reflection on top of the car is there , may b its not visible in this small image . Please check the image in my blog http://sumitcg.blogspot.in/

I can't get your point " Also the clear coat seems just a bit too strong" . Please tel me .

Thank you Preston,
the car is already rendered with motionblur (moves about 5-6metres / 25 frames).
I chose such a minimal movement due to the fact that I thought of it as a rigshot, where the cam is attached to the car.

Iīll try to increase itīs movementspeed and therefore the blur.

I tried some things to improve the previous image, but wasnīt very successful...
so I decided to create another shot this time with an hdr and a better perspective for this car.

Here is it:

In contrast to all of the sleek shiny waxed-up new cars I've seen posted, I decided to do a bit of a mussed up version. HDR + Mental Ray + adjustments in AE.

please, critiques welcome!

@dmamadness I love the different approach. Right now the mud doesn't feel right its very flat. I would add a bit of a bump map to it as well as a little color variation in the mud. It feels like it was just painted on. Also the background image seems a bit desaturated its causing a little conflict in my eye. Maybe dial that up a little. Keep going your onto something very cool.

Sorry for the late reply. I've been a bit busy. What I meant by "the clear coat is too strong" is that the reflections facing camera seem too apparent. I would like to see more diffuse color towards camera and strong reflections at the glancing angles.

deijardon

Nice scene. I love the bg plate. I would try to break up the reflections of the sun on the car so that there was more of a falloff. There should be a really hot glint where the sun is reflecting and dim across the car. It's very planar as of now. I hope that makes sense lol.

Love the dirt! I especially like how it looks like you ran something over on the driver side bumper. Is the background image and the car in the same color space? I looks like the bg image has incorrect gamma.

Hello phantom,

lighting and shading is looking good!
Maybe itīs just me, but I think the perspective is not right.
The Car seems too long and flat and the angle is not matching with the road.

This seems like fun. Here is my progress so far. Need to bump up render settings to get rid of some noise. Some minor material tweaks may also be needed.

Phantom - Your lens distortion is way too wide. It may be accurate to camera spec but this could be a scenario where you go a little different to make sure car is presentable.

Funkygfx - Those headlights are sexy mate!

I'll work other angles, and I'd like to say that the model is amazing, really easy to work with!

Cheers!

Guys I have a question, how do you manage the fresnel on the carpaint reflections?
I though that the car didn't have reflections on angles facing the camera, but they do, at least the shiny ones.

@RedStar Both entries are amazing, I like the first one more :P
Can you share a little bit about your escene set up?

@RedStarGraphics When you post outside of the forums credit the modeler. No respect for the post I found on 3Dtotal. Hope I don't see that again.

RedStarGraphics
12-15-2013, 01:10 AM
@prestonplatt I don't have maya so I never got the model open. I take full credit for this model. I can post any wireframes needed as proof. As a modeler I would never disrespect another artist by not giving credit.
I felt because its the same make/model It would be ok to use it in this event. If not I have no problem with being disqualified.

RedStarGraphics

Here is the proof. I have never stolen a model in my life and do not plan on doing it anytime soon.

@RedStarGraphics I guess I need to eat my words here. I appreciate the quick reply, Topo looks different enough.... so i guess i'm sold. Its just These models are very generously made public so you can see why i'm eager to call people out for using them without crediting. It just seems very odd that your very detailed model matched the model supplied and was only posted in these forums so thats where I made my judgement call. On your website the only reference to a Lambo is one that claims shading and lighting. With retouches by you. and It was the exact image in here. Im sorry for the wrong accusation. I might also add that is a very good model, well done.

RedStarGraphics
12-15-2013, 04:26 AM
Dude it is totally understandable! That's why I wanted to clean this mess up right away.
I totally agree with you on giving credit where credit is due. I would never disrespect another artist esp a modeler with something like that, I know exactly how many hours go into producing a model and for them to share it for free is just awesome!

Yeah I was actually comparing the two from you guyses renders and its an amazing model I must say! I would have loved to his model and I even downloaded it, but I dont have maya as mentioned before so I just used this one.

Again, if this disqualifies me I have no issues with that, but I figured because quality is so similar I don't really get an advantage when it comes to that.

@redStarGraphics totally not about Disqualification just as you said giving credit where its due. Really glad you cleared it up. Im going to have a model up here soon and lets make sure it goes across all platforms. The 3D community is something much different than any other art community where we need to respect each other since the rest of the world really doesn't get what we do. Thanks for the honesty. Keep up the awesome renders my man they are really good.

no disqualification of whatsoever. Generally speaking when taking part to the lighting challenge if there is an heavy modification of the model provided it's right to post it in the thread where you show the image. Also I would have tried to improve mine according to suggestion ;)

So i finally finished my lighting Scene. Not sure if i did the contest right because it seems like everyone is lighting to a back-plate, never the less here is a small breakdown for my submission. I used 3DS Max 2012 and i rendered in Vray. I used Various Vray lights: Mesh Lights, IES lights, and self illuminated light Textures. For the Fog pass i used Vray Atmospher I composited in After Effect using EXRs for the main Render passes and TGAs for the Multimattes. I hope you guys like.
