Just for my curiosity - I'm interested in hearing some efficient methods of assigning hundreds of materials and textures to books in the scene. I knew of a way in 3ds Max, but am mostly a Maya person nowadays so I think it could be enlightening to see how differnt people approach it.

This is a beautiful scene and I am still pushing to get those shadows and the wood reflection/refraction as close as I possibly can.

My one hiccup is getting the curtains see through enough. :banghead: http://25.media.tumblr.com/f0fb4fa088d631b776c521c9f8fd7f06/tumblr_mnzt9cmQSd1qcn5d3o2_r1_500.jpg

I have the max scene I can share with texture for the book included if anyone need it. about the last post probably it can depend on normals of the curtain and ceiling. Try to flip them of just add a "shell" modifier. I don't understand why but while exporting sometime you have flipped normals on obj. it should do the trick ;)

that would be awesome if you do. i have tried to use the random mat id and multi texture scripts in conjunction but i really don't like the result.

Giorgio I really like this scene thanks.

@jobim awesome Start it has a nice feel the wood is a nice texture for this as well

@MrBobble Super cool. maybe some more fun detail in there? Just a thought its nice though

Alright im going to take a different approach to this challenge. I want to focus more on lighting and sculpting the light than just these arch vis types of renders. Hopefully we can get a challenge going here soon to add that element. so here is is. Its got a bunch more work to be done but the comp and lighting are in the right direction. No HDRI. 6 lights in the scene over all. 4 Spot lights and 2 area lights. Maya and Mental ray

I suggest you to render with a pure diffuse white material and after add materials one by one, to see if you have issues with shaders. Personally, I think the problem is with the curtain shader, refraction often leverages render times.

@aduha The image is looking nice. I think you are using maya if I saw correctly. If so make sure your gloss iteration count is not too high, photon count is low, and it looks like you might be using a good amount of translucent objects those will increase it a bunch as well. Also the refractions already pointed out. just some thoughts. I would work on the drapes a little more maybe make them less translucent. looks great though.

@okmijun Im curious as to your theory on having the same camera angle?? claiming it will turn this challenge into "rubbish". I don't really get it.

@Jojo1975 thanks for the link with the book textures that was awesome of you.

I know this is a little different but Here is my second WIP. It needs more detail and a lot of work on the little characters. I want to get some feeling out of it. Over all alot to work on but im excited about where its heading.

This is my first test render, i use maya and maxwellrender. Thanks for jojo1975 's nice scene, I made some changes to make the scene look more close to the original photo. Curtain material is the hardest part i think. The white one is not translucency, but also a strong diffuse, i'll keep on it.

@pinhead122: Thanks a lot.
i think its a little differences when we use different renderer, but the ideal is almost the same.

1.my goal is to make the same as the original photo, so i use the sky dome instead physical sun.
2.i create couples pieces fit the windows, hide from cam(its wont cast shadow), apply a emitter material to light the room. because the indirect light always slow down the render and make more noise.(the same in mental or Vray)
3.i found the curtains, sofa on the right, and bookshelf is still too dark, so i create another lights to fix the problem.
4.finally, i will talk about the curtain, personally i think its better to be single-face object, thats easier to contr.

later i will share my steps of the render test and the settings. the challenge is free to play, i am enjoy it, maybe i will give a try on sunlight or nightlight render when i finish this one. Looking forward to you guys great works. :buttrock:

@fangjing I love your image so far. The lighting is dead on I would work on the books now. They need some more variation as well as maybe a little scaled down vertically. Not much though, I do see how you are trying to really recreate the image. Some nice additional modeling as well.

Here is a quick Wip. Rendered at very low settings. Im really unhappy with the drapes they need some work. Overall tons of work needed on this one.

@prestonplatt:thanks for your comment. I think your image is good enough  i love the color and the carpet.

Because its free to play,so we cant say which one is better, my suggestion below is base on the photo.

1: I combined some books, and use a planar mapping on side, the cover face may not correct, but they so far way from the cam, god knows.

2: I rebuild the white curtain by single-face, apply a SSS material. in my first and second wip, u can see the curtain is translucent, and blur the frames behind, but it has no vertical shadow. by far i fixed it with OCC com in PS. now i think maybe the problem is the curtain is too flat, i will do another test later. i try to done the 99% work in just one single render. the orange curtain i apply a SSS material too.

the emitter boards facing inward the room
http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b495/fangjing/render%20test/SETUP_01_zps4e17fe51.jpg
the boards facing the windows in order to make the curtain and wall light a little bit. all the boards are hidden from the cam
http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b495/fangjing/render%20test/SETUP_02_zps6f3849f8.jpg
this board is to lighting the sofa on the right
http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b495/fangjing/render%20test/SETUP_03_zpsf9ed7660.jpg
there is another cone light to lighting the bookshelf(not display in the image). and i put two black boxes to reduce the secondary diffuse from the white wall. one is behind the cam, another is beside the bookshelf.

Hello, this is my quick WIP. I only assigned super basic materials because I wanted to concentrate on the lighting first. I can spot a few issues (like the cloth on the bench looks pretty bad), but could you please critique the lighting and color scheme? That would be super helpful!

http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/5058/t9o.png

I feel like the lighting is a bit off, but I can't put my finger on why. Thanks!

Yelena3D
06-28-2013, 09:58 PM
Johnathan, what program are you using?

One thing I find helpful, when working on lighting, is just doing a white override material on everything except for the glass. That way you can gauge exactly what the light is doing without textures getting in the way.

The tricky thing about this scene is getting the light to be very diffused. In the photo, there are no harsh shadows because the curtains diffuse all of the sunlight/skylight and create very soft shadows. To fake the effect, I used a very high area shadow setting on my sunlight (3ds Max + Vray) but depending on what program you are using, you may need to go about it differently.

The sunlight, itself, needs to be moved up. It's shining too far into the space. It helps if you pay attention to something like the bookshelf. Check how far the exterior light reaches along its surface. It will help you figure out just how high the light needs to go.

JonathanLampel
06-29-2013, 12:47 AM
I'm using Cycles in Blender because I don't have Vray for Max or Maya. The same principals should still apply though. In my scene I removed the curtains, but I should try putting them back and doing as you suggested. When I'm doing lighting, I work with one light on at a time and I find that helps a lot. I'll try the override material and see how that goes. Thanks for the help!

JonathanLampel
06-29-2013, 05:26 PM
At first I just took a quick look at the picture and lit the scene out of my head, but this time I tried to be accurate to the reference. The materials still leave something to be desired, but how is the lighting? I feel like it is almost there, but not quite.
http://imageshack.us/a/img194/3818/6ita.png

EDIT:
OK, after a bit more work I came up with my final image. It could definitely use more modelling attention, but I don't want to spend too much time on something I won't put in my portfolio. Thanks for the help guys, and critique away!

Here's my round 1 rough. Vray/max. I live in a place where it rains most of the time (Portland, Oregon), so I wanted a sunny day instead of the cloudy type. Wishful thinking I guess...

Love all the work guys.
I've kinda setup my scene for my shot but haven't had time to do much more than that.
I'm not sure if i can make the deadline.

I'll keep checking in though.

Hey guys, does anyone have any suggestions for the books? I heard someone used a plug-in but i wasn't sure.

For me they just kinda worked. Are you using max? I just put the textures in the same folder as the max file and that was all it took.

My WIP. This has 5 area lights and one directional (sun) - no GI. 17min render in modo 701 at this resolution/quality (1200x600 on a 4770k). All post proc (bloom and color saturation inside modo).

Curtains are difficult to get right :p

Books on the other hand - select all books - assign the same material. In the material introduce modo's new "Variation texture" gradient that will give each item random color from the gradient - voila!

Here is my first render(published). First time trying out a linear workflow. Still working out kinks with over bright areas. Hid some books as well because of lag on my machine. Cheers!

@nitz I really like the image as start. I will make a bit more of closeup. The green color of the sheet is a bit distracting why dnt' you try a more neutral one ?

@deijardon (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=357670) it seems a 70's room :) I will change a bit the texture tiling of the floor now it seems quite big keep going !

@runejw yeap curtain are difficult to get right :) Keep working on them ! I will also contrast a bit more the image. the bookcase on the right seems a bit washed out !

@Batcha
the shaders need a bit more work and im my monitor the windows look a bit overexposed. Keep going !

@Kcpr
in the second image the shadows lkooks better. The carpet material seems good and also the bookcase. Curtains need a bit of work. Great potential in your image !
Keep going !

Hey everyone, this is my first time entering once of these challenges. Any and all constructive criticism welcome. I did move some stuff around and change the scene a bit, i hope thats ok. Im using Blender with LuxRender, with some post and compositing work in Nuke.

A little evolution. Using 6 area lights and one sunlight. No GI, but don't save much time really since the area lights needs in the order of 1000 samples to not give grainy results. 34 min render.

7 area lights
5 with GI and 2 without GI
working on this in arnold

gonna use a whitecard to fake overexposed BG in post so that is why the middle of the windows look incorrect.

Also I saw someone was using a triple switch for the books?? how does that work?

have no idea how to get that carpet working
render time around 43mins I think...have to figure out to bring that down.

@Kysg what software are you using I see Arnold? Maya?

I'm using maya and arnold...

Oh yea don't mind the black square behind the curtains, that's due to the alpha channel, a white card is gonna be placed behind there and will fake overexposure in post.

after doing some testing most noise clears when sample level is 7 but that is a two hour render hmmm...

Edit: later on made adjustments

@Kysg if you are usgin maya you can paint the carpet and then convert the paintfx into geometry. Arnold should have no problem to work with lots of poly ;) you can give it a try

Another wip

Can't figure out how to batch render from arnold. I know I can use kick, and I know there is a help command but I just want to be able to just render a sequence of frames.

A step back in terms of light definition, but a step forward in getting a faster render. Ditched area lights in favor of lumigons (invisible objects acting as light emitters) - only useable with GI though. Around 10 strategically placed lumigons of various light colour and intensity. One physical sun and one portal also.

Rendertime 6min 30 sec (@900x450 pixels) in Modo 701

http://imageshack.us/a/img191/2198/couc.jpg (http://imageshack.us/a/img191/2198/couc.jpg)

Full HD (http://imageshack.us/a/img4/6788/a6wp.jpg) takes almost 36min...

Everybody render so realistic image! I want to learn how to achieve that.

A friend told me that my render is unrealistic because there are too many lights. But I don't want to use GI because I can't handle the noise well and can not afford the render time with my old laptop. I hope there are ways to improve the realistic using finalgather. I will be greatfull If you give me some suggestion.

I use mentalray with finalgather. There is an area light with look-up texture work as sky, two incandescent lambert wall with ramp texture at the back of camera, an area on the ceiling simulating the bounce of sunlight, an area light and directional light that just lit the curtain. Render time 6 min.

This is my last W.I.P. post here. Next one'll be in Final Entries Post.

Hello,
@Kcpr, very nice renders and very nice sofa textures..
Here's my contribution, I didn't use the base model, (hope you don't mind @jojo1975), as I had enough time to spend on it :)
Didn't model the sofa and books but modeled the rest. Organic things modeled in 3dsmax and the rest in sketchup. Rendered with indigo.
Things to improve for next time: Fill the pillows, curtains, find a way to make decent falloff textures for clothes.

Photomatching in skp.
