View Full Version : Maya And Notebooks
Marlboro-Man 12-20-2003, 08:51 AM Hey there guys,
If you could be so kind to help me... I would like to ask those of you who own a laptop/notebook pc.. What is a decent notebook that will run maya well?
What sorta video card do i need? Does it need to be a geforce FX 5200 Go ? there's alot of other funny video cards t hat come with the notebooks these days,...and I'm not surwe which ones will handle the polys as well as my current geforce 4 ti.
So please guys if you guys have any ideas on what's a good notebook for maya on the move, please fill me in..
Regards,
Marlbs

you could check out your local computer store and see if they make custom notebooks....cuz i know here in canada theres a few places that will make custom notebooks for u for a reasonable price.

I'm experiencing similar problems. The video card in my Compaq Presario causes some problems in Maya. I'm going to get a new card but I'll have to contact Alias for their recommendation before I do.
Here is a link to qualified hardware for Maya:

I use a Compaq N800w with a ATI Mobility FIREGL 900. I'm very happy with it, though at the beginning I experienced some crashes when going into Hypershade, and after the 5.0 to 5.1 upgrade I had some crashes relating to locked temp files. Things seem to have stabilized on their own. Weird.
It's on the recommended list at Alias, there are a few hardware rendering things the card doesn't support. I believe that the newest NVidia mobile card may be a bit better (comes in the top of the line Dell and maybe the IBM t40. I think the IBM Thinkpads are very good.

If you check out the above link they say the following about the Fire GL 9000 Mobility in IBM Thinkpad T40P:

i'm using a laptop that running maya really good. and im lovin it
my spec is . .
1.7 M centrino
1 gig of ram
128 mb geforce FX 5650 go.
its a inspiron 8600 btw. b4 i was going to go for that 3 gig HT that use Ati card from a custom notebook shops. but my friends had those and alwasy giving him a problem. (ati's card problems)
but personally for stability i rather go with nvidia chips instead of ati. for money wise, i say ati . . but if for just a little differences in cost and u could get better .. why not ? :bounce:

Hey guys thanks for your input.
The thing I'm most worried about buying in a laptop is the video card. I heard that the ATI cards have alot of problems.
I've seen that most laptops have the geforce fx 5200 GO or the 5260 Go. I don't know what the heck is the difference here, except probably Ram..
I want to be able to pull around polys in these cards, just as well as a geforce 4 ti..
I've been looking at the Toshiba P20 Satellite . The one with the 17" wide screen and the 3ghz processor with Nvidia Geforce Fx 5200 Go.
What do you think of that one? it's damn expensive though, and if there were any other Notebooks with the Nvidia card, and a good screen .. I'd go for it. If it was cheaper.

toshiba has a good name for laptop. 17 inch is a nice screen size, but u will have to consider the bulkyness - except offcourse if u just going to have ur laptop sitting there in your house -
i was almost getting one of the 17 inch size until i actually touch the laptop. i mean that thing is as huge as a laptop monitor could get. its really hard and annoying to travel with. so i endup buying a 15 inch widescreen instead. because mostly i work outside ( i get bored working inside )
a 3 gig is a wise choice especially running nvidia 3dcard along with it.
but all that i have to say is, consider the bulyness that u going to get. if its to bulky u can't say its a laptop anymore.
the reason i bought this laptop is so i could move around easily. mines only weight 6.7 pounds :surprised . so when i got called to be in japan the next day, all that i have to do is wrapped up my laptop to a bag, takes some clothes and go straight to the airport.
but again .. in the end its ur decision . hope u get the best out of it :)
ps: go HT if u want to take the 3 gig laptop. its more powerful that way :buttrock:

Hi again guys,
My friend, she's got this toshiba laptop. I forgot the model number but it is about a yr old.
Installed maya on it and it doesn't run an ATI card or Geforce Nvidia. Viewport and opengl is all good and stuff..
But come rendertime.. as soon as she hits the render button, maya closes up straight away. It happens consistently.
Any idea what's the problem here.?
Regards,
Mark Soon
I remember reading several months back that ATI 9600 and 9700 Mobile cards are supposed to be as fast as or near comparable to anything that we have seen on the desktop. So you might want to do further enquiries. I have ATI 9600 desktop and it works fine with Maya 5.

I just tried out Maya with a MobilityRadeon 9600 pro card on Whitebox CL5 laptop (Driver based on Catalyst 3.7, delivered with the laptop).
Not sure if I noticed every "bug" with maya/videocard/driver/whatnot.
1) Selecting and dragging an isoparm on a nurbs surface seems to gives me an momentarily update-kind-of-like-problem, regarding the red line itself, it gets repeated and clutters up the object if I drag it up and down the object. But disappears/works normal, when you release the mouse button.
2) In renderview when rendering a ball, I notice a non-perfect cirlcle-edge on a relatively perfect circular object. I notice two small dents/pixel-shifts(?) on the circular edge. The saved image is ok/normal though.
Renderview is screwed up in some way. Im not sure how to explain it. Seems that it renders one pixel as four, like a double sized image in a way.
Im not sure if a new omega, dna or other modded driver off the Catalyst 4.2 will show improvement. I havent gotten that far, as I sent my laptop back because of a faulty video card (8 days old), not sure what the problem is. Display is screwed up right from boot. This happened days after I installed Maya.
If someone has experienced the same thing as I with the few display problems in Maya, please tell me a solution, I'd be so happy clearing it up, because Im not sure what the problem is.

well, u said that ur friends laptop doesn;t run on either 2 major 3dcard rite ? (ati and nvidia)
...theres might be an incompatibilty issues with whatever 3dcard that toshiba put on ur friends laptop.
thats first, . . but when maya shutdown when ur trying to do rendering, . . maybe the whole system is incapable to do rendering. how much memory that he has ? whats the cpu speed, . . coz when u doin maya regular softwares render, its doesn't use any 3dcard powers.
so hopes that information help. :)
best regards

what about HP ?or DELL?
I think their quality and capablity are enough for nomal rendering.
frankly,I advise you to buy Mac,that is better.

from what i understand, upgradeable notebooks are starting to be produced. you might want to look into it. in my experience the video card is the most important piece, and we all know how fast they get outdated.

I just got a Dell Inspiron 8600 not more than two months ago with a 64 Meg NVIDIA Geforce FX5200. It was upgradable to 128 Meg as well.
Runs Maya just fine, only problems i've seen is a weird kink when I try to trim nurbs surfaces, but it's workable still.
