View Full Version : Hiding Default Shaders?
Dudeman 06-18-2002, 06:04 PM I'm sure this question was asked before.....but I could not find it.
Is there a way to hide:
Lambert1, ParticleCloud1, and ShaderGlow1?
It would be wonderful to have these out of sight and out of mind.
Mel script?
Thanks,

Those materials must be there for the creation of new objects and cannot be removed from the scene. And since they aren't visible as viewport objects, they have no visibility properties to toggle. With some heavy lifting, you could write a scriptJob for the HyperShade panel that culls those materials from the list of all materials on the project and then resets the Hypershade view. Not perfect and certainly a buttload of effort.

Thanks BFM.
Sounds pretty hard wired. I know nothing of mel. And I'm sure it would be difficult to do. Because no one has done it yet. I understand why they are there. I just hate when they are always in my face.

Hey BFM, since you can't hide them, is there a way to organise shaders into folders or tabs?
Just so you could have a tab or folder labeled "Character1" and inside there is all the shaders used upon that character.

You can't ( and i think it's a bad thing in Maya :thumbsdow )
...but you can write a little mel script, to change attribute of that shaders at Maya startup .

Good grief. Is it really THAT bad? I don't even notice them anymore. Probably because they don't stay on screen any longer than it takes me to make a new material and hit the up/downstream connections button. Then they go away and I almost never seen them again.
Not that I'm against the idea of hiding these things but, it 's also not like you are prevented from performing some function or it's a limitation of some kind.
I guess what I'm saying is that after using Maya for long enough, it's gotta be about the last thing on your mind.

mmmm... no.
I'm not talkign about hiding the default shaders.
I'm talking about organising your custom ones.
Like when you have 50 shaders in a scene, it would be nice to be able to organise them in some way, like in folders or a seperate tab.
is that possible? and if it is, is it worth the effort?

You can organize them in different tab.
You can create new tabs in the hypershade , look at this :

FlameDevil, thanks for bringing the 'tabs' to my attention.
ALthough, the default shaders follow. Agh!
It's not that much of a nuisance. I think its funny that there is no way to separate them from your own created shaders. Just for a visual standpoint.

Whoops! My bad......
Create a 'Work Area' tab and it works!
Thanks again Flamedevil. And everyone else for replying.
