View Full Version : mentalray shader networks
I am slowly learning how to set up shader networks that use mentalray elements. In a tutorial I followed, they mapped a parti_volume's "Scatter" attribute with a VolumeNoise texture. Later I experimented with mapping other parameters, but had little success. For example, I tried to map the "width" attribute in a contour shader with a noise texture. I didnt get an error, but it didnt render any contours either.
How do I find out what can be connected to what in mentalray shader networks?

The tutorial came from Alias via email. I dont know all the details, but it was a short extract from a manual (chapter 13 I think), and I think it was sent to us as part of a market-research survey - they will contact us in the near future to see what we thought.
It covered use of the contour shader, and making a shader to create a smoke filled crystal ball, which was quite nice.
Anyway, I found it useful, though lacking in much detailed info. It was a "connect this, then that" style, with no detailed explainations as to why you would want to.

that's pretty much the case with all the tut at alias, I found it quite anoying sometime, 'cause if you're no expert in this particular field it's long to figure it out..
too bad if you want my opinion..
