Great idea about using light at max contrast, I was trying to do something with cel shading myself, but now I know that I should just use the cel shading outlines and play around with standard materials...thanks so much.

Have you tried any other cel shading plug-ins ? I tried Illustrate!, but the line quality was nowhere near as good as yours. But, then, I have not really worked out the best settings.

Awesome. Love the lines, incredible. ToonReyes really does it that well with no tweaking? Nice work with the shading, and great posing and models/expressions as well, that's what really makes it. Definitely makes me think of manara, or the cover art for the 'naked music' CD collections.

Only crit I'd find at the moment is in the second 'making out' image, it seems too much like the nude girl is in the same pose from the first image, and she's staring off into space..it makes her look a bit odd/dead. Maybe close the eyes or shift the arms/hands some? Hard to say.

Anyway, great stuff. Look forward to the finished animation.

Looking at the car picture I totally agree with the manara similarities myself.

As for NPR, Love it huge supporter of it, just disappointed everything is goin the root of Humans and animae style renderings and not toon or disneyesque. This might be because even Disney Dreamworks (though they are getting close with Spirit) and Nickleodeon can't seem to do it right, onlye ones who have achieved success in this area is the Turner/WB guys who did Cat's don't Dance and Iron Giant.

Anyways love th images (for more reasons than one) and as to your NPR, two comments, you need to et the lines onto the reflections too. Don't know how to do this with your plugin, as it appears to do it in a post effect rather than actually in the rendering, but try to figure that out, and then get some roughness to the lines, the only roughness I see is from Jpeg compression and lower resolution jaggies. Even the Dreamworks guys can't do clean up that good.

Derby, I don't use maya so I can't really say, but I don know maya is fully capable of this technique:

http://forum.bhodinut.com/viewtopic.php?t=292
all movies are down now. I will see about trying to get them up again but don't count on it. THis techniques qas done in XL 6.3 +, but I know it can be done in max out of the box as wel, andXSI can do it out of the box too. I have been trying to develop a good universal system for decent toon shading. Right now I am looking into marker style renderings, colour pencil, and more line controls for hatching and out lines. There is alwasy the good ol light rig too. that can be done in any app:

Well, he said he did it in Max, and Poser plugs into max and he even uses the name 'vic 1' and 'vic 2' next to some of the images which are both DAZ product names. I am just curious is all. And I realy do think you can get this expression and more out of victoria--she has almost 200 facial morphs (she does not come with poser). http://store.daz3d.com/store/merchant.mv?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=ZP1&Product_Code=ps_pe020&Category_Code=ps_Victoria

If Maya is not capable of a technique it won't be available in many programs, let alone 3D Max, I have over 3 years exp in both and a highend program such as Maya is capable of doing much more, in fact it is simply a normaldirection issue and very easy implemented, if you do not know the capabilities of Maya, I should advise you to try it out and I don't believe many would disagree with this. I do believe you can not really say, but thanks for the competition, I shall accept.

Here's a quick test I did just now, to show you how easy it actually is.

LucentDreams
06-20-2002, 07:09 PM
Ahh thats where you are wrong these use far more than just a fresnel normal detection. These use colour falloff (i assume maya has this too) LEVR mixing (I hope it has this but even max doesn't but there are some decent workarounds.)

As for getting to know maya, yes being a highend program it is capable of manythings other apps can't do, and at the same time being an app, there are always things every app can do and things that each app can that others can't. Trust you me, there are things that max can do that maya can't without plugs, there are things LW can that maya can't without plugs, and things XL can do without plugs. I am not about to get into a debate, but this was my suggestion to you asking about doing cel shading.

nice test, but can you make the line eperated in reas, can tyou do a dotted line, can you have the thickness of the line repond to the light direction, everyone nknows the fresnel efect, the preset package I was showing was capable of all of this, as well as control ing individual polies colours and lines, various hatching and spot colour techniques (not shown, its in the new package) light responsive and light non responsive shading.

animalunae
06-20-2002, 07:13 PM
I'm not getting into a meaningless debate about capabilities but I wanted to say that Maya isn't about plugs, it's about the program, if you connect nodes in certain ways you can easily achieve anything you want, because of that lowend programs will never be equal to highend. I have noticed the strenght of Max, but it is NOTHING compared to Maya

animalunae
06-20-2002, 07:22 PM
This will be my last input into the conversation, I cannot debate with anyone who has no idea of the program, here's the reply to zette, just a condition, which will add a certain position in the colour ramp to a place on the geometry base on the lightsource, you can do this using the normaldirection node, which will allow you to make surfaces with different shaders on each side etc...

Sorry for the bad image

Ya, I've to agree with you after using Maya for few months. Having used Max for several years now I can't see myself going back. Max was all about plug-ins and there are many, but you had to pay for all that, which is alot of money especially diz dayz.

Maya also has an open architecture for our programmers to write and develope.

I don't want to sound like I bagging on Max, it's just that Maya offers hella more and it's what we prefer to use now.

about this way of rendering, i had a project which had to be 6 min of animation in 2month, no time to render!!!
the illusrate way it is much less render intensive, from 10 min per frame to 40 sec (depending mostly on number of line intersections)
and as far as lighting there are usualy not many lights in a scene, am i wrong jcombe?
i know illusrate recommends only one light in scene, whats the setup up in cartoonrays?

I mean the lines on the mesh... not thoose big black demo-version-lines. How do you set cartoon reyes so it doesnt render the wireframe at all?

Try with a lower convex line value.
Anyway, it's quite difficult to find the perfect values for the entire model, so you should deselect the general lines values render option and adjust different toon materials for each element of your model.

Haven't tried it in max five, but I used Vecta 3D for a short while at a small webstudio, really awesome cartoon flash rendering. Thats the same renderer in Plasma, so I assume it will be the one used in Max 5

what can I say jcombe. It's just so cool. I especially like the girl with cigarette and jeans, so stylish, so full of laidback ignorant attitude, so french. It feels bad to try and copy you but on the other hand you're not the first one to use a cell shader. Anyway here's something I did inspired by you.

Also just a technical question. U use Cartoon Reyes for your lines right? But what kind of shaders do you use for you characters?

jcombe

just turn the spotlight contrast to 100% and u will have a toonshader

Hope this sorts it out. I'm off to have a look at BLT now.

And you do it all alone? If you ever need some help ;)
And thanks for the light tip, works great, don't have the problem I had with other toon materials anymore. :)

holy crap!

i usually dont go for toon shaded stuff much, mostly cos its done badly ... BUT THIS!!!!!!!!!! this is so goddamn nice and sexy and full of personality. i'm downloading your movie at the mo.

what are the chances of seeing the models in a normal 3d material?? that would be cool to see.

you also mentioned that if it was a poser model, the results would be diffrent! how so sir?

anyway , cracking work!:bounce: :bounce:

Jcombe, you should start a new thread for this, I believe to many people are missing this, and it should be on the frontpage! ;)
One more technical question, what cloth simulater do you use? (stitch, simcloth, wich?) You get very nice results. Keep it going and keep us updated :)

05-30-2003, 01:41 PM
i use simcloth for cloth and hair

Excellent work!! :applause:

The motion capture is exelent, I like it
But I think , you should work more on the music, I don't like the music, I think is not enough detailed, something is missing, but I do not know what

I'm waiting the complete animation!

Good continuation!

I have to disagree with buddy above, I do like the music you've brought into it jcombe, I think it does capture the moment. I'm no techno trance wizard, but from what I've seen/heard, things look and sound pretty close to what's really out there. I still love this animation, not only because there are two hot ladies dancing, but also because I do think the animation is stellar, including the music.

great work!
I really love the characters, the animation, the whole story (which I'm anxious to find out about.) I wanna know what that Big Eye-thing is!

The style is really great, I love the toonshade.

Jcombe, maybe you should give all the info in the first page again:
- BLT = Bizarre Love Triangle
- 3D Max with Cartoon Reyes
- Light at max contrast for the Toonshade
- Your models
- Motion capture used

Stuff like that, like a FAQ.

Hi, i am currently working on my reel and i m thinking of using toon shading but i have a few questions regarding this technique and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could help me
i was just wondering if the toon shader is dependent upon UV's ?
do i need to fix the UV's to get a go0d result or does it just not matter?
thank you my friends@
that is all
