OMG...I can't believe this...normally I don't believe in "black outs" but in this case, i'm experiencing one myself.

I'm making a skeleton and I have to display the selection handles for some joints in normal mode, outside component mode.

so I go into component mode, display the selection handles. but when I go back to normal mode they won't display (duh) so I need to know the way to display them in normal mode.
i'm sure i've done this before a couple of times, but I just completely forgot!

hope you can help :)

It sounds like you´re confusing displaying and selecting. To *display* selection handles you can either:

1) open the attribute editor, and in the Display section (of the transform node) activate "Display Handle".

or

2) Do it in the main menu via Display->Component Display->Selection Handles.

or

3) Type "toggle -selectHandle;" in the script editor.
