IF YOU WANT TO GIVE A TRY NOT TO ALL FOUR CHALLENGE YOU STILL HAVE TIME TO POST YOUR FINAL IMAGES IN THE FINAL INDIVIDUAL THREADS BEFORE 31st DECEMBER !!! YOU WON'T RUN FOR THE GRAND PRIZE ;) BUT YOU WILL BE REWARDED IN SOME WAY ;)

Dearl All
there's a new challenge ! So this time your challenge is to light one of these two architectural landmark. One is the Farnsworth house and the other is Tadao Ando's Koshino House.
The challenge is not to put an HDR but to reproduce the lighting as you will see in the references attached. to viewer should have the feeling to view at an architectural book.
I choose this challenge because I think it's not easy and also you can have some good portfolio images ;)
I made all the models. I already know that there are lots of poly for the Tadao Ando's Koshino house couch , but I didn't have time to include displacement map. If you want to can avoid the couch ;).
I also included some ready made trees. In the koshino house I used the real species that are present near the house and also for the Farnsworth house I've prepared a pack with trees belonging to the species you can find the the neighborhood of the house.
Also I modelled all the furniture for the Farnsworth house so you can have fun also by doing some interior shots.

Here is my first WIP of many. Ive never tried to do any photo real interior lighting before so Im really excited to put a bunch of time into this. I searched through and found about 4 shots im going to try to recreate and here is my first.

Decided to go linear workflow with mental ray. (No Glass in the windows yet)

This is an awesome challenge
Cant wait to see what everyone comes up with

Where can these trees or at least a list of the species for the farnsworth park be found?

The ando house is a good choice, but i'm not all too on-board with the farnsworth house being in this - there are already 10+ incredible series' of renders of it out there already. Like, the best arch viz ever done is of this house and it seems nearly everyone who works in the field has already had a go at it.

I will definitely work on this one. : arteest:

prestonplatt, your render is a really good start. : thumbsup:

cubiclegangster, I understand your point, but being honest I don't see that as a problem. For me is an incentive to do better or at least try. Interesting that the best arch viz of this house were made with Maya and Mental Ray, isn't it?

Hi Guys!

I'am new in here :) First question, I use Cinema4D R13 and have normally no problems but if I try to import the data the viewport show nothing (if I start to render then yes but if not I dont get any picture).

Has someone the same experience? I would like to take part and take the challenge :)

Detail from Tadao Ando's Koshino house

Used modo 701's physical sun only, to get a feel for what's possible with that.
13 min render with GI, no post-work

I hate you so much.
They weren't in order. It's more interesting that the quality achieved with maya/MR and the 3 max/vray ones is comparable - showing that software doesn't matter and it's down to the artist.

I just kinda figured you're effectively in competition with people who didn't have a deadline and picked away at these for (in guthrie's case) the best part of a year - It's going to be very difficult to make your own version which doesnt simply boil down an angle already done before by one of these, and better.

@cubiclegangster
I see what you are saying but most people in this forum are using these lighting challenges as a way to learn and the fact that there is a good amount of material out there already on this subject is great. Inspiring really. I mean the forum is called a lighting challenge for a reason.

@cyrus3v
Thanks still so much more to do. The leather is giving me problems. Cant wait to see what you come up with

I never seem to be able to finish these challenges but I wanted to give it a try. Here is what I've managed. The scene is absolutely calling for a Gundam (http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=gundam&qs=n&form=QBIR&pq=gundam&sc=8-6&sp=-1&sk=&&id=3FAF7A624D73CAC6FBE020927A12477ED5147A78&selectedIndex=6#view=detail&id=3FAF7A624D73CAC6FBE020927A12477ED5147A78&selectedIndex=0) bot.

WIP #2

Not sold on the lighting just trying to get my base materials and colors down. The leather has been an issue don't know if I want black or white. Next step is to get the lighting to be more realistic and to add some organic qualities.

Also outside is just a crap texture im going to work on getting it to match the lighting indoors obviously.

Changed the color a little, changed the light, changed the atmosphere. Will still need to fix the concrete texture and a couple of other things.

:D Well, you said the top 6 and this one is in first place. ;) And is true, it doesn't matter the software, but I still found amazing that he used Maya and Mental Ray.

I agree with you, with a deadline (maybe we can get more time) is hard to achieve the quality you can find in other works. I am not sure when I will start post something, as I am finishing a job. But right now I am adding more detail to the model and then I will start working in the light.

Giorgio Luciano you did a great job

Hi I'm a compositor learning lighting and rendering. What does "The challenge is not to put an HDR but to reproduce the lighting as you will see in the references attached" mean? The contestants can only use the default lights in the package? Sorry I'm a bit confused.

I don't think so. Is just a way to say, Look this is more then using a HDRI to light this scene.

By the way, you may need to scale the model a little to bit.

Here is my 3rd WIP. I went another route for lighting this one. Trying to get a better feel. Im having fun trying different styles out. This had a point light couple area lights and a image based source for the sun.

Still needs a bunch of work but im feeling better about it

I had some problems in displaying the scene in the viewport but now it works! Thanks a lot!!!Well, the .obj format exported from Max and Maya is not the .obj format that most non-AD apps are able to read consistently. Can only assume it includes something proprietary to AD. Also look out for flipped polygons and normal maps.

Done with Maya and v-ray. 3 rect lights, 1 sphere light and 1 hdri.
There is too much furniture i think so but anyway...;)
Critics are welcome.

Updated texture for the wall, but something wrong with the alignment of layers that will need looking into.
Anyway, also used dynamics simulation to drape a cloth over the couch.
Changed the camera angle as well.

*Edit* Fixed the texture locators - but still room for improvement with respect to getting a closer look compared to the real concrete slabs.

WIP4
@Tit-Co im glad I could help and your glass looks awesome! here are some quick things to think about for your image. I love that you took away the furniture it was way too cluttered. The rug right now has that bumb map but unfortunately the value is too high and too low res of a map it looks very odd. Maybe make that bumb a lot more subtle. Also the outdoors. Its very green and unrealistic. I would try to find a better texture that is a little less intense. And also maybe think about the way you arranged things think about your eye and how it takes in the scene. Over all its coming together though man keep going!

Ok for this WIP I tried to clean things up a bit more and add some organic qualities. just subtle things like bends in the models o make them look withered. Im new to arch vis being my first I just want to add imperfections and detail in a story kinda way but im pushing myself to keep it more clean. Im going to go for more perspectives of the house now.

@erwinriau Great Entry ! But I find the texture of the concrete very realistic but a bit distracting ! try to make it a less reflective. The carpet looks very good and also the texture of the pillows are fantastic :) keep going
@bjorke Very interesting POV. Play a bit more with the transparency and post more update
@Preston. It's a great entry. Good lighting and also the overall feeling in the background. If you want to make it a real competition now you should go for the vintage look ;)
@Tit-Co The background and the lamp have too bright colors and look distracting (also the red lamp cast too much light on the bed). The other shaders look good even if the carpet need a bit more work. it's a very good start keep going
@Erwinaiu very good light but the glass (or camera) shows a bit of distortion. Also try another POV :)
@Marty D. try to mode the trees which are not present in the original. The one of the left distract the viewer.keep going and add more lights..

CHANGE----
I've seen that the forest challenge was not taken by a lot of people also due to lack of time and because people didn't even start because they think they won't have enough time. Also I think that snice I'm preparing the industrial challenge I need a bit more time. I really would like more people to participate to this challenge since I think it's a good chance to increase your own portfolio ! So the schedule of challenge will change a bit.. less challenge more WIP and more time
YOU HAVE TILL END OF MAY TO FINISH THIS ONE ! AND POST WIP !!

Hello Preston and thanks for your comment!

I really like ur first image and the second one is looking nice so far, but in my opinion the wooden front looks kind of "reddish", a bit too bright and thus catches too much attention.
The Color bleeding on the ceiling is a little strong as well, but might go away when rendering with more samples.
The perspective is great although I dont understand why theres a chair in front of the kitchenette :)

Just my 2 cents.

prestonplatt
04-23-2013, 11:33 PM
@funkygfx thanks and I agree it was a little too red. I do want a bit of a red tone to the wood though. Im trying to somewhat re create one of the sample images. in that image the chair was in this position and i dont know why but I love it sitting there even though its out of place

Ok I added more detail on this now. Im not sure Im happy with the outdoors yet. From here I want to add detail and further refine the comp and colors. Still figuring it out

Is there anywhere I can read up about how to achieve lighting like this? Books?

Hello there's a bit of feedback :)
@neotrixstdr really awesome image. I love the vegetation ! about shader. I will change the shader of the curtain. It looks too transparent. and reflect too much light ! I will also add a bit more variation to the grass. Also I'm waiting for a less noisy render ;) and to see a bit more angles of the scene. Try to use also different angles and try the interior :)
@SharinSri I like the overall composition and the choice for a night illuminatyion. Try to denioise a bit, and watch out for too much GI (there a strange glow in the pillars of the house)
@Hamburger I like a lot your images the light is very gentle. My favorite are the night one. Just two idea. The first is.. why dont' you try a variation after adding a dirt mask (you dont' need to rerender in post you should do the trick !) and also why dont' you try an interior shot of farnsworth house ? it can be good to have both interior and exterior for comparison ;)
@Andreas. I like your image a lot. Very good shader and good light, but in my opinion the camera is too high why dont' you try a shot from a lower angle ? I think it will add "drama" to your image. Also I will move a bit the trees on the left now they make the image too "cluttered" :)
@Preston. Very good image. I will be glad to see a less red wood and also less noisy image. :) I like the DOF and also the overall composition. (the shader of the curtain is very good ! perfect translucency) but why dont' you contrast a bit more the image ? I think it will improve a bit ;)
@anishsreedhar (http://forums.cgsociety.org/member.php?u=468761) I like the lighting but please add more trees on the background :) Also try to give a bit more DOF (to focus also the second chair) keep going !
@Voigg. I will lower a bit the camera, and change the floor with a less reflective material. Keep going and post more !
@Purple rainbow I like the idea of a room full of light. The shader of the wood need a bit more variation (all the natural surface has imperfection !) pls post more !
to all !!! KEEP POSTING !!!

@jojo1975 Thanks for the feedback. from your advice I changed the red and changed just a slight amount of contrast I might crank it a little more

Also added a subtle tree shadow to the curtains I feel like it helps the composition. Im feeling pretty good about this one I might move to rendering an outdoor scene I tend to find these indoor ones to be a little more fun and challenging.

The leather on the chair has been a little frustrating. Im still trying to get it right. Im starting to really enjoy mental ray as apposed to Vray.

Wow! There's some great work on the past 2 pages I just looked at!

@funkygfx - That's terrific! Wow! What a great rendering. I'm not 100% convinced by the lighting on the trees: maybe there could be less light from the house, or the light from the house could be concentrated lower down or on the right, and there could be a bit more sense of light from the sky or translucency in the leaves where they are in front of the brighter sky? (Especially translucency in the far left part of what's visible.) They can be dark, as long as they don't go below the level of blue fill everything else is getting, and they look translucent. The highlight in the corner of the house looks like a very perfect circle, maybe the throw pattern from that post light would be shadowed more on the top and bottom? These are tiny issues in an image that's already terrific, though, great job!

@prestonplatt - Great work! Maybe the shaders could be improved a bit: it seems as if there's a lot of contrast in between the white and black surfaces of the drawers, when the specular at least could be more similar, the red in the wood really pops out from the rest of the image and might go down by a hair, and the metal reflection (on the lamp and teapot) seems a bit bright on the front-facing parts (fresnel settings). Also, the white part of the reflections looks very flat, where things are toned down in a reflection you sometimes get more color, for more of the look of a high dynamic range reflection. I think the scale of the quarters and pennies needs to be double-checked, too.

@neotrixstdr - Really nice scene there. I wonder if the sky should be brighter, just so the clouds don't look darker than the porch roof of the building. Also, the shadow area under the building might get a bit more fill light, it looks like so much sky fill on the lower building, and so much fill light inside, that I'd expect at least some of that blue fill, and maybe reflections and highlights, on the shadowed grass.

@SharinSri - Nice scene! I wonder if the lower part of the building looks a little over-bright compared to the ground under it in places, if that could be seated better into the environment.

@Hamburger - Nice work! For the night scenes, it looks as if there's some fog or atmospheric perspective on the trees, which is fine, but so of the more distant dark parts of the building could use a slightly higher black level to make it look like it was in the same fog. Also, seeing things through glass sometimes adds some reflection or glare, so the chair looking that black in some of the night shots maybe it could be lifted up a little in tone.

And here with a quick and dirty photoshop post:

I still have to find and paint a proper backplate and still tweak the lighting and some materials. I really hope I have some time to create an exterior shot as well. And then go for a night shot like funkygfx. I really must say these are brilliant looking images.

@jeremybirn Having your feedback in here like the old days is awesome so thank you for that and your notes have been greatly appreciated.

@funkygfx awesome final. I hope you are having some good times out here

@neotrixstdr Image is looking great only issue is the Vray Dirt shader you have going on. Id tone it down or make a map of your own thats more organic. Looks good though.

Some just very minor changes that had been suggusted. Brought down the darks in the handles as well as fixed the scale issue with the coins. I tried resolving the issue with the dead reflextions and the change has been very subtle. I just added a little dirt and took down the reflect. its taking the drapes into consideration leading to the flat white. I might do some overriding of the reflections. My next will be the for the final gallery. This challenge was great

I am against the idea of extending because Im eager to get to a new challenge. This one has already been extended which I was excited about but im getting burnt out of it now. but here is an idea maybe extend the deadline for this but release the new challenge as well. I see no reason why that wouldn't work.

@walwop Great start I would brighten it up a bit. Or atleast the highlight areas. I know you are probably going for a dark image but right now there isn't enough light to grab your eyes attention. Keep going

You are absolutely right, it is under exposed.

I wish there was some sort of exposure metering system in vray like real photography cameras that would make it easier to expose for a particular part of an image rayher when using vray sun.
Or, am I missing something.

Prestonplatt, I can understand you but some folks only now saw this challenge. And don't forget that:

The challenge is not to put an HDR but to reproduce the lighting as you will see in the references attached. to viewer should have the feeling to view at an architectural book.

And so far we have really good renders, but I have not seen nothing like the reference images. It's up to jojo1975, but for example I would love to see more work from Chrisis, PurpleRainbow and Hamburger.

Actually, I feel that we could get much more from these challenges. For example, if we share how we get the result, not only that helps a new guy, but also is a help for us. We can get some help to improve the workflow or the way we do the post-production, etc.
Or at least is what I intend to do.

@cyrus3v The forum needs to keep moving along thats what keeps it alive. If someone is now just finding it they should be excited for what is to come. My scenes actually have a number of light sources but with the way arch vis has progressed over the years it would be foolish not to use some sort of hdri map for at least an atmospheric color / reflection. One of my favorite things about these forums is seeing where people take the lighting and feel and sure maybe some people have not gone exactly as the reference images are but this is an art form. Also I would love to see you post some work on here at some point...

@abuha there are easy ways to set up post process depth of field and its incredibly efficient and fast. If you are working in maya I can give you a really quick awesome way.

Still working on polishing up my final images for the final gallery cant wait for the next.

cyrus3v
05-24-2013, 06:13 PM
And I agree with you, the forum needs to keep moving, but that doesn't mean we should rush the things. So far, only two users expressed their opinion, let's hear what the others have to say.

In my opinion you missed the point when I quoted the jojo1975. For me, what he meant was: "don't rely only on hdri map", because many artists think that a hdri map is a solution for everything. I am pretty sure he didn't want someone to look at the scene and say: Oh, let's use an HDRI map, some post-production and is done. Next.

I don't want to sound rude, but if you still have the opportunity to work in the other building. And the reason why so far I didn't show anything is because I have been really busy working in several projects and only this weekend I will have the time to start doing something. It's not for me because even if the deadline is not extended I will still work on this scene, but I want to see more from the previous users I mentioned.

I miss seeing something like I saw at Natural History challenge.

Here my second wip after I tweaked the lights and especially the leather. The goal for me is to do as much as possible with procedural textures.
The next thing is to break it up into useful layers (background, carpet,...) and bake some procedurals to get the render times down. This shot took over eight hours on my mac book in 2k resolution.

with a bit of photoshop:

@Nicelife wow, definitely nailed the color & the feel! Sweet!

@Cyrus really happy you liked it. And thanks for checking my website!

Well it is definitely more work to do in cryengine (not necessary harder). It takes a lot of modeling, though; everything has to be game-ready. Btw the entire house was remodeled :)

I do believe cry is the next big thing in archi-viz (or certainly hope so). It really gives a completely different experience over a given project. And yeah, I'm sure many people will be skeptical about it, but just recently I rendered an animation of an older commercial project done in cryengine. The entire process (render to edited video) for a 2 minute animation was like 2 hours and the quality of the render was close to a mediocre vray animation :)

Also, there are certain thing you can only do in cry. As in why just do the farnsworth house, when you can do the entire area ;). Here is a view at the Fox river:
http://www.hpetrov.com/temp/farnsowrth-wip4.jpghttp://www.hpetrov.com/temp/farnsworth-wip4.jpg

@Chrisis:
Thanks for your compliments. I am not quiet there yet and still have to do tweak some shaders and look it a bit more natural in the lighting. Especially the dynamic from exterior and interior. Here the trees need more contrast and bruned out highlights. But first I have to get my render times in order. It's rendering over 8 hours for a 2k res and that's way to much...

You don't really face that problem with your approach using the cry engine. Really like that and the areal shots are really looking good. Do you think you will finish some interior shots as well?
I totally agree with you about real time render engines and archviz or in other productions. They have their weaknesses but if you need to be very flexible till the end about animation or camera perspective it is a huge benefit. I might dig into cry after the challenge.

Koshino House is one of my favorite, it's good to see such huge amount of good works being posted here.
Anyway, I started this late but I wish I could push it further.

[edit on May, 30]
Just forget to mention that I used Maya + Mental Ray in these rendering, in order to practice and explore the possibility of new software and technique. Definitely, 3ds max + VRay combination is my favorite all the time! But it's always good to try new stuff. :)

Software is just our tools, what's more important is our eyes.

@Ziye-Liu : Really artistic works !

@T-R : Awesome even if we can't see the house in details. I really love the mood. What about the nature? Did you use Vue x-stream? And what about render time ?

@nicelife : Good. May be the indoor and the nature outdoor are too bright.

@chrisis : Nice work. Can't wait a full version with furniture

@Preston : To my mind the wood in the kitchen is a little bit red yet. And may be you can try to hook up the wood species betwen kitchen and the foreground. Also too much coin i think so and i don't really understand the coffee stains on it.
I really like the rest of the image and specially the dof.
And about the curtains i'm not convinced by the too high translucency in comparison with the light outside.

@funkygfx : Great image even if there is too much grass in your composition for me. Almost half of the image.

@neotrixstdr : Awesome work ! Could you give words about the making of the nature ?

@Tugmaster : May be you can work more on the sky. It's too white i think so.

---

Well here it is my next version with a more vintage look with the leather. I work on the nature outside using an acer rubrum given by Jojo1975. I would like to have a full 3d nature.
About the render time, 9 hours for this one (it's pretty much i know). I also changed the transluscency settings.

@cyrus3v yes, i add fog in the scene but it's done in the post.

i'm thinking of adding some volumetric god rays right now. Thx @cyrus3v for the hint of "dust" i will try with it, would add more realism to the scene with a little bit of dust . :)

Wow, more and more awesome art appearing! There are so many great visuals here.

For the cry-farnsworth, this is as about as far as I can get right now. Turned out curtains are quite hard to do in cryengine (transparency), but they actually have physics.. Would have to do the furniture outside the challenge. Definitely a good learning experience, though!

Tit-Co : I here i'am

Chrisis : So this is realtime ? very nice ! this Cryengine look very robust, I'm interrested in the prosses you use to do an render like this, the only thing I dont link with many of these realtime engine, is the glows it put every where, it look "magic" but not realistic.

Finaly, I motivated my self this night :)

I tried to mimic one of the picture in the references, this one :
http://uppix.3dvf.com/images/zeLR.jpg

And "voila" my contribution to this challenge, I hope you like it :
http://uppix.3dvf.com/images/XSn6q.jpg

I used Maya Mental-ray with FG 2 bounces, Sun&sky, lens_boken (this one killed my render times..2h30 in 3000x2250)

CC are welcome ! if I have time I'll work on it later, there is some big work to do with the vegetation :s

Thank you jojo1975 for this lighting challenge, your scene was great !

FeD, perhaps the glass is too reflective?

Chrisis
05-31-2013, 08:22 AM
@FeD Thanks! And awesome render you've got, one have to take some time to tell which is the photo! The speed you did this in.. amazing.

Btw, cryengine is a game engine (unlike many others on the market, like lumion), so you just make a game level and take a screenshot. I agree with you; seems glow/bloom is really a big thing in rt engines.

Hi all, render n2
http://uppix.3dvf.com/images/rN8O2.jpg
Color inspiration from this picture "hb-entire-exterior.jpg" <= in the references files

cyrus3v : you're true the glass seem to be too reflective, but I think i'ts because of the environement too, on the first reference, we can not see the sky because of the forest. and i did not fill all the "sky hole", I tried to lower the reflectivity and filled with more tree so the sky dont blow up in my reflection, I think it's better now ?

Chrisis : thank you for the nice words. Question : so it's not possible to delet the glows in Cryengine.

nicelife : nice render, maybe the interior is a little bit too bright , and some DOF on the tree could make it look even more real.

Chrisis
05-31-2013, 01:23 PM
@FeD there is a way to tone bloom down, but I don't know if it's possible to get rid of it completely. Maybe with a console variable.
Speaking of which, crydev website seems to be down so I can't check.. or log in cryengine to change the project. Sort of glad I did the image last night and did not postpone for today..

@nicelife Looking good! Vegetation is now quite nice and works really well with the entire scene.

Really awesome to see all the different styles and approaches. Good luck to everyone!

Hi FeD,
I like your new version even better. The mood and lighting is very nice. I noticed some FG artifacts at the ceiling and the leave drop a rectangle shape. Did you notice that?

Thanks for the comments. The dof is already rendering because photoshop did a crappy job with a depth pass. So I render it in 3D.
Your the second one who finds it too bright. I think I darken it a bit.

nicelife
05-31-2013, 04:28 PM
I added dof. Which was really necessary in the foreground and I have redone the grading.

This is now my last one:
http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2828/8903384788_b3963aac2c_b.jpg

Hello to all ! So a bit of feedback, and I've also thought to delay a bit the deadline. Also there will be a new schedule of the LC challenges and of news will arrive soon !

@ nicelife. About shader the wood is a bit too reflective and also I think you can tru to change the dimension of the texture. I will change the carpet material also or eventually take it out. It's very bright and a bit distracting. there are good tuts about carpet around :) a good start is this one ;)
http://bertrand-benoit.com/blog/2011/02/20/shag-carpet-using-forest-pack/
Also I will try a version without the flowers and with a different texture of the marbles.
I love the curtain shader ! it's very well done like the leather one (try a black texture or a total white one to add contrast to the image.
About lighting I will try a more contrasted approach to make the image more "round"
@ Fed. That's a terrific start ! I like the post processing and the approach ! that's the spirit of the challenge ;) mimic a real life picture :) You need to tweak a bit the foliage that now seems "floating" on the air. Also i will add a bit of occlusion (just an occlusion pass in composite for example) and I would low a bit the reflectivity of the marble. Please keep posting.
@T-R terrific start. pls post some more camera angle !
@Ziye-Liu. I love to see other interpretation of this challenge. Just try to give a bit less reflectivity to the surface (just a bit) and post more ;)
@Chiris. I'm very glad to see a real time animation. I would like to do sooner or later a realtime lighting challenge. Can you please PM me for details ?
@ All pls kep posting ! ;)

@cyrus3v: thanks for the link! that's an amazing tutorial.

Here is my update. I was able to put some more work into it over the weekend and Im pretty happy with it. This is the low res version but it shows the shot well enough. I might try to do some heavy post process color wise but for now im ok with it. The beanie also bugs me maybe its the scale. anywho First some feedback

@T-R Your image looks awesome. Great feel. Maybe throw that dirt on the building smaller and add some more subtle stuff to the building. Right now i look and Im mostly drawn to the trees. I want to focus on the building.

@Ziye-Liu very nice angle and feel I would work on the wood. It has a plastic feeling to it. Maybe a spec map with a bit more gloss.

@FeD Looking pretty damn photo real. the leaves are the only thing bugging my eye. Feels like there is a occlusion pass. I think adding just a little detail like some dirt or just something to add a little variation could go a long way. awesome stuff

@nicelife I really like where you are going. Work on the leather a little more and the wood on the inside framing and it will really pop. keep going

I just notice you are using mental ray. There is an option in the mental ray material which allows you to have blurry reflections. As soon I get home I will check that for you.

Hi folks,
here is my final entry. I finally managed to finish it and it was worth to do the feedback I got here. Thank you very much for that.

http://s3.amazonaws.com/forums.content.luxology.com/images/full/dc1b05ab73e46f1b7590ffcca375c1e6.jpg

I re-worked the lighting and did several shader tweaks for the wood and leather. I also modeled the floor and gave it different stone texture. I also re-modeled the bed to look more like the original one I found here: http://www.quattrodesign.fr/(p1zgbz55al3gxbn1odatunmk)/%5Cuser%5Ctextes%5CClassics_Mies_Van_Der_Rohe%5C02_Barcelona_Day_Bed_Mies_Van_Der_Rohe.jpg (http://http://www.quattrodesign.fr/(p1zgbz55al3gxbn1odatunmk)/%5Cuser%5Ctextes%5CClassics_Mies_Van_Der_Rohe%5C02_Barcelona_Day_Bed_Mies_Van_Der_Rohe.jpg)

I also changed the fur on the carpet. I made the hairs longer, thicker and denser.
Hope you like it.

---------------
@cyrus: The grass work looks really nice. I'm looking forward to the rest of it.

@batcha: I really like the background work you did. The tree leaves look very nice here. Have you done them with SSS?
I would remove the stool at the bottom right because the geometry of the button looks a little of here. You also should add some refraction color to the glass table to get a blue greenish tint on the sides which is typical for glass. I am looking forward to the final image.

batcha

Thankyou!! @nicelife :bounce:

I have corrected the glass shader and replaced stool with a small plant as per your suggestion and its realy looking better now. I have also managed to add more trees Hurray!! tree leaves are done with mentalray mia_meterial with translucency.

cyrus3v grass looks fantastic 5!!. I figured out the solution for reflection blur .Added DOF lens shader in the camera :) and its working.

Can someone explain what is best way to create curtain cloth shader ? SSS, Translucency or any other method ? All are giving different results i am confused. i will post the final images soon.

nicelife your image is fantastic. I like the warm color and subtle leaf shadows. I am glad that you and batcha liked my grass. I am trying to find the perfect balance between the different types of grass that we can find.

batcha, I was thinking that a material can reflect like a mirror unless you change the glossiness or maybe in your case you can use a specular map to add some variation to your reflection. That is one thing I am also doing using a specular map for my materials to add that touch of realism.

Have a look at this article Materialism (http://bertrand-benoit.com/blog/2013/05/26/materialism-1-5-rough-metal/)

I did a quick walk through of my photoshop file. You can watch it here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KcBn7qz9dk).

@batcha:
In modo I did the same thing with simple SSS for the curtains meaning setting scattering distance to 0 which in your case with mental ray should be the translucency. So similar to the leaves. In post I then added an AO pass to the curtains (multiply and 50% opacity) to get some details back which were blown out by the light. Found that one by accident :).

@cyrus: Glad you like it.

@ nitz. You did a terrific job. I would add a bit of dirt to the shaders that now look very "clean".
Also you can see that the trees are a bit different in the reference. If you have time I would change a bit them in the background (if you render using rendering pass it should be not too much work to composite a different background)
To everybody. Really great work ! Keep posts coming :)

@ ALL the end for ALL the challenge is end of September :)
Giorgio

Hey Giorgio,

Thanks for the comments. Will sure look into that and will update the renders accordingly.

Thanks again.

My first WIP of the Farsnworth House. Not happy with over all amount of light in scene. Might open up the curtains. Also chose my own angle just to be different :)

it's a very very wonderful start. Can you try also to tilt a bit the camera in order to correct the prospective. I will be curious to see how it will look :) the shaders are great ! Keep going !

Dears,

It's my first step in Landscape Contest.

I know I've got a little time but let's try.

This view is my favorite, so I'll try to make render as close as possible:

...And here is my firs render:

For now there's no materials except glass, tree (temporary) and grass...

A LOT of work to do ;)

Dear jojo,

Can you simplify my work a little ;) and give me info which trees are to use in Farnsworth House?

Anybody knows what species of trees are there, except main black maple?

I'm not a vegetation specialist ;) and it takes me forever to match them ;)

Dear jojo,

Thank you very much!

I thought the deadline for this competition is 30th of September 2013, as stated here:

For LC #32: Architectural Landmark "intermezzo" you MUST post your final image in this thread http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=112073 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=1120736)6 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/) before 30th of Semptember 2013

Now I just don't understand what's going on ;) cause you just wrote us to keep going...

Isn't this Competition closed?

I thought the same thing, but if we have more time, Great. I have been really busy and this extend of the deadline gives me the opportunity to finish the scene. :buttrock:

Hello, I've update the rule them all thread. I've seen that lot of people have interest in taking part only to one or two challenge so, to have more entries I thought it would be good to keep all the "subchallenge" open till the 31st of December.
After the 31st everyone will be "judged" by how many images would have finished and eventually be eligible for the prize of Rule them All, or for a "selected" gallery for individual subthread ! Hope this help and sorry for creating the misunderstanding ! My fault ;)

I felt like doing a sidestep to do something different with the Farnsworth house.

The technique used involves Maxwell rendering with physical sky/sun and one emitter, plust the excellent "Multilight" feature (so both these images are 1 render, just changed intensities of each light source when the render is finished).

Finally some post (using a Sony compact camera) to make the renders look like watercolor paintings. :arteest:
