anticz 06-17-2002, 08:16 PM Hello everyone, I've been lurking here a while a I must say there's some mad talent on this board. This is my first post. It's basically an episodic short I've been working on for fun. Here's a direct link to the first episode movie in MPEG1 format (352x190, 11.6mb, should play on almost any system). Hopefully there'll be many more (I'm already working on The second episode)

There's alot more stuff on the site http://www.nyxies.com/ . Comments are very welcome and appreciated (good or bad) and if any of you have kids I'd be interested to hear their comments as well. I still have a bunch of content I need to get up on the site. I'll be putting it up as soon as I can (I've got a day job too).
Here's a model sheet as well

Hope everyone enjoys this!
Oh, and a big HUGE thanks to Tom McGuire at Pixeltwisters (http://www.pixeltwisters.com/) for hosting the movies!!! Thanks Tom!

there's only one thing that i saw that i think could use some more work..
when leeek jumps across and is hanging from the ledge his right leg seems stiff in its movement...other than that...top-notch.

Man, I love the colors!
really excellent lighting and
use of texture!
rad design, animation, atmosphere, 'n sound.
:buttrock:
It's cool cuz when I watch this, I get all sorts of imagery of what he might've been doing before he discovered this cave. An added bonus to the overall feel of it!

wait a minute, I just looked at your sig, Mike Brown? from antics? man how've you been? you probably don't remember me but I surely remember you... the last time we spoke you mentioned you were working on something big, I saw some early renders at that time but had no idea it was this :) nice man, check your PM
P.S. are you by chance working with Mike B. Comet on these?
cheers

hey I love it! great character, nice animation and lighting..
question..I'm working on a similar scene using a lot of cave walls,
did you use a texture map or a procedural shader for the rock?
whats this animation for...personal or professional....great work man..keep it up...:bounce:

Whee!! Cool, just got home and already some replies.
graphiouz, Thanks! A friend of mine named Dave Beres did the audio. I think he did a great job (he's available and looking for work in San Diego if anyone's interested). I agree about the sound at the end, could've faded it but I think it still works as is.
tobalno3, Glad you dig it. There's a couple things animation wise I'm not all that happy with (like the thing you pointed out). I'm sure I'll wind up completely redoing the title card for the next episode. I really don't have much time to work on this stuff myself. Ultimatlely, I just ran out of time.
Joril, Cool!! Thanks a ton.
Tob, Glad I could make someone smile!!!
Navel_Lint, YAY!!
synj, This was originally going to be the third episode (no, I'm not trying to do the Star Wars thing) but I decided to do it first beacause of it's simplicity. The sets were easy to construct and I only had to deal with one character. Things will start getting alot more complex in the next episode. I've got something to build on top of now.
lildragon Of course I remeber you Tito. Cool site Btw. This episode took about 5 weekends to constuct the sets, animate and light everything(I've got a day job too ya know :D). I'm using Max 4.2 stock (no plug-ins) on a Dual 2.0Ghz Xeon. I built and textured the characters quite a few monthes ago. I'd estimate it takes me about a week to construct, texture and rig one of these guys (they're pretty simple designs I think)
Titan, Thanks! The cave walls are a little bit of everything, displacement, bitmaps and a procedural shader we cooked up at Presto on Myst 3:Exile. This is purely for fun and learning. Maybe if people like it enough and it gets popular I'll make some stuffed toys or something.
Thanks everyone! I'm glad people seem to enjoy it so far. I'm still curious about the impression kids might have about it.

Hey Minh, I just posted it a few hours ago. Didn't expect this kinda response. I'm pretty stoked right now!
I just saw this posted on the cover of cgchannel, WooHoo!! I checked the server and it's getting hammered right now. I think it'll hold but just in case, can anyone here mirror the movies? Please:).

I'm downloading the animation now...it's taking a while. I figured I'd go ahead and comment on the character design. He totally rocks!!! That's one of the coolest designs I've seen. Very expressive and the look of the stills are awesome. Can't wait for the movie to download.
Great work I love the site. I'll be checking for your updates.
haha, i remember that guy from Sijun, that was a while back, dling the movie as i type......
I asked you then, how did you do the hair, and you said particles... any chance of a little tutorial on EXACTLY how you use particles for the hair?? i'd really love to know!!!!
***edit***
hmmmmmm, can't seem to dl it, hope you have enough bandwidth, cgChannel seems to direct a lot of traffice to the sites they link to...... i will try to dl it again later.......

Rogue, Thanks a ton! Glad you like them!
Cool, I've got a to of stuff to get up there. Just need to find some free time.
Kaos, Sorry bout the download speed, I'm looking for a mirror for the overflow. You wouln't happen to know anyone? :)
As for the hair, it's pretty easy. Make a small sphere and a strand of hair (Cone with 3 sides and 4 or 5 height segs with a little noise on it). Make a PArray Partical emitter. Choose the sphere as the emitter and hair as the partical (partical type is instanced geometry). Set the partical speed to .001 and the rotation as direction of travel. Give the partical some randomness in its size and snapshot the whole thing. Hope that made sense. Once you get it setup once you can save it as a partcle preset. Makes good grass too.
bout the mirror, dunno........
bout the hair: thanx. gonna try it out..........
ha ha I love it the perfect blend of creepy and cute in your design just the way I like it a little dark streak in ones work goes a long way......Love it.....I'm guess maybe you like burton movies?
 Alright keep it coming oh yah can you get up some more stills?

Outtages may be occouring!
Damn damn damn...I run the server that is hosting the Nyxies movie..basically the lack of availiability is due to there being thousands of requests per minute. Good for Mike and his new animation but bad for the general public. Hopefully the load will taper off later on this evening and the reliability of the download will be more stable.
Tom.

The response to the animation has been ultra mega good. So..there are ton's of requests to download it. As i write this message there are currently 80 downloads in progress. So..furthur downloads denied and future requestes are qued up for the next surfer.
Apparently a Dual P4 still isn't enough to serve up the downloads. ACK!!

Really nice work! Great to see that guy in action. :) The sound is awesome too. Maybe stress the relief pose after he makes the jump and wipes his brow (pant a bit when he leans over the hole and slow the wipe a little). I was curious how you did their skin textures as well since they look like they glow a bit. Is that lighting or some sort of glow map?

Now I've watched it, and I am very interested in the next episode :) Looks great, really nice style you got, both visual and animation wise. Only crits I can find are a few points on the animation, a twitch and some stiffness, but it's really nitpicking.
Any idea on when the next episode will be finished?
muckywetnoodle: Looks like some sort of falloff map to me.

That's a very nice anim.
Cute-ass character, and the light-thing is very very nicely done.
More. More! MORE! :bounce:
I'm stuck on a detail though..how have you made the wrinkles that forms on his arms when he bends them? Heck in general there's some really nice muscle-definition going on as he moves around. I'm assuming it's Physique at work? It's just that, according to my little universe, you can't get wrinkles with Physique, "only" muscle-deformation.. so please, if possible, I'm all ears for a brief comment on the skinning-process :)
2nd on my things-to-explain-to-Jon would be those eye-lights. I'm pretty impressed by the effect. I can't nail down if the lights themselves seems to change size as he blinks and squints, or do they "just" fade and toggle on and off? Oh and I'm also curious if the volumetric lighting is truely volumetric, or geometry.
Nicegoing!

That's Great!!! The ending was cool :)
Some things could be fixed, but it doesn't really matter.
It's great.
Neat eyes.
Can't wait to see the other ones. (Will they be longer?)
Cool!

muckywetnoodle, Thanks for the comments. Glad you like the audio, I'll let Dave know. Skin shader is a combination of lighting and falloff maps in the self illum channel of an Oren-Nayer blinn shader. Kinda gives it a vevety look.
urgaffel, Glad you like it. Yep, it's falloff map's in the self illum.
gaggle, Cool!! I'm excited to do more. I just used the standard skin modifier that comes with Max. It's way more powerful than physique and a whole lot easier to use as well. It's pretty easy to setup the morpher gizmos's inside of skin to get things deforming the way you want.
The lights are true shadow casting volume lights that change size (cast shadows) when he blinks.
seantree, Thanks a ton. I'm excited that the feedback I've gotten has been overwhelmingly positive.
erikals, All the episodes are planned out to be around 1 to 1.5 minutes. Might not seem like much but trust me, it's alot of work. Glad you like it so far!
fxgogo, I apprecieate the encouragement!!
I'd love to hear someone with kids comment.

Hey anticz.
I showed the animation to my son. I told him to watch it and tell me what he thought, but not to say anything before it was over.
He chuckled a few times through it.
When it was over I asked what he tought. The first thing he said was that he thought that after the intro, it would say Shrek2. :) I don't know...I guess it is sort of Shreky.
He said that he liked that character and he really liked the way his eyes were lights....he also liked the sound they made. He also made the comment that he liked the way his 'hair' was combed back. He also really liked the music as well.
I asked if he thought it was interesting, in which he said yes. So I think it has some childrens appeal.
Hell, it appeals to me. Again, excellent job. I envy your creative talents.
