c & c welcome
modeling - 3ds max poly modeling

(all textures hand painted except for the slight cloth bump, reflection in eyes, wood on floor which were photo source with tweaking from the 3dtotal texture cd's)
rendering - 3ds max scanline (no gi, radiosity or photometrics used)
composite and post - photoshop
additional software used - digimation shag hair and stitch for fur and cloth simulation

amazing!!!!!!!!!!!  great work, i just love it! :D
12-15-2003, 09:26 PM
hey man, thats pretty damn impressive. great modelling, especially on that headpiece, quite exquisite :p. the texturing is very good as well, and adds a lot to the model.
theres only two things im not sure about :
1) The balls on his hat, in the final render, they look photoshoped, and also, its quite hard to see how exactly they are attached to the base. it detracts my eye away from the rest of the model, which is a shame, because its great.
2) The look on his face, to me, doesn't look right for his stance. he looks shocked, whereas the rest of his body looks as if hes quite calm and subdued, maybe hes worried about falling off the top of those crazy shoes :p.
besides that, its a great model and texture

12-15-2003, 10:53 PM
Where are the moderators and admins this is cgtalk award material :bounce:
12-15-2003, 10:54 PM
This turned out phenomenally well, Kuman
I can't really find anything to crit because I love the way it looks. I love the dramatic lighting and I like his pose too - it's a little mysterious. Your shading work is really great, and the colours you're using are extremely effective and moody. Fantastic work!
12-15-2003, 10:56 PM
I somehow feel like I've seen this before, tho
12-15-2003, 10:57 PM
This is absolutely amazing! I especially like the way you did the folds in his clothing but everything is top notch. Fantastic job.
12-15-2003, 11:02 PM
Good luck with expose dude!
stupendous work! i bet Maxon would lke to plug this as a fine example of their software
You've posted this before right?
There aren't 2 of these out there, are there?
The amount of work you've put into this is terrifying! It is nice to see it in it's finished glory. :D
My only crit would be that given the huge level of detail you achieved with the cloth modelling (I must thankyou for the video you made!), it's a shame to see it 'lost' amongst such an ambiguous specular... To me, it just makes some areas look retouched when the detail is right there in the model.
That said, of course it's such a blindingly complex modelling/texturing job that you clearly know what you're doing and can point and laugh at me.
it couldn't end any other way, the way it progressed(is this a word?) is impressive
could you post a screenshot showing the light settings?
12-15-2003, 11:45 PM
He posted them on the wip section if i remember correctly ... phenomenal work there .. really
12-15-2003, 11:45 PM
Love the platform shoes, are you sure its not Sly Stallone under that costume?;)
I believe this is the best human I have ever seen here!!! I think the modelling is nearly perfect and texturing the same. The final shot seems a bit dark to me but does fit the idea of an opera lighting. This is simple wonderful... this will be in expose 2
this is tuely inspiring. It makes me flutter
Thank you so much for making this
12-15-2003, 11:57 PM
Hey dude I think this is technically perfect, the modeling, the lights, the texture, amazing work
it would be funny see some animation. no critics.
12-16-2003, 12:25 AM
To everyone who remembers seeing this before - it was plugged some time ago when it was still a WIP ;)
12-16-2003, 12:30 AM
(... ...) I ... äh ... I really ... would like to say something ... but ... Hhm ... man, I'am really dazzled by that stuff ...
REALLY IMPRESSIVE WORK !!!
12-16-2003, 12:36 AM
Dig it.
12-16-2003, 12:36 AM
hey thanks everyone
i really apreciate all the kinds words and i'm really glad you all dig this peice.
leigh - thanks again for the plug. seems like you aways got my back, twice now in one project, i owe you a beer :) . if it pleases you and the other mods here at cgtalk, i'd like to submit the final render for the gallery though i'm not sure how i go about doing that. anyhow thanks again for the support.
i'm just trying to stay learning, stay working hard. trying to stay humble and be focused and be the best artist i can be. and many miles to go before i sleep as r. frost would say.
12-16-2003, 12:53 AM
Kuman - the gallery images are selected by me from the plugs. But have no fear, this one will definitely be added to the gallery by the end of the week ;)
12-16-2003, 12:58 AM
uhm...the painting for the face is not detail enough...coz the snould no blank space area for the around the eye part and around the mouth part too....
those painting for the face should painted all over the face...and the expression is not enough of what we chinese call "Spirit"
i said all these coz i am a chinese n i watch opera show veru often...
12-16-2003, 01:18 AM
WOWOWW it' superb....how it's really amazing
open:bounce: :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
5 stars for me!!!!!
12-16-2003, 01:31 AM

12-16-2003, 01:41 AM
fantastic~!...your work....so cool~
12-16-2003, 01:51 AM
damn nice work, nothing to crit from here, perfect all the way, love the pose, model, textures, expresion, all of it, well maybe a little more light on the final render but thats personal opinion :D
gratz on a job well done!!
12-16-2003, 01:56 AM
Its a nice theme!
One things that I observed is that, the proportion seems to be not so perfect. Im comfortable with the way it is now, as the perfect proportion seem a bit 'too perfect'.. u know what i mean.
Theres a famous Chinese saying, "the prettiness of a flaw".
Keep up the good job! And congratulation for all your hardwork, it certainly pay off!
12-16-2003, 01:57 AM
Front page! You earned it man. I love it!
12-16-2003, 02:18 AM
God he turned out brilliant! I wish you the best! Hats off man.
12-16-2003, 02:35 AM
12-16-2003, 02:42 AM

hope to see more from u, good luck and congrats.
12-16-2003, 02:47 AM
kuman,..."hard work breed great feats":..can't wait to see the next..
can you pls. say what the poly count is ?
saw it as a wip thread and now that you have finished it i must say you did a great job :applause:
can you plz post the maps you used for the model
12-16-2003, 02:57 AM

12-16-2003, 03:02 AM
wow.. this is so great!!!
12-16-2003, 03:03 AM
I saw this when it was still a work in progress. I cant believe it is finished now. Great JOb. I really like it.
12-16-2003, 03:32 AM
James, a very well deserved front page spot light for you. I've told you before, this is your best work to date. An honour to have you critique my work.
Thanks for all the inspiration, just brilliant.
Get it sent in to Expose 2 if you haven't already.
12-16-2003, 04:21 AM
as the chinese would do:
I kowtow to the greatest of the images :D
Seriously nice looking renders ; would love to see a close up of the details on the headpiece. Its out of this world. My only comment is that the shoe/feet proportion looks a bit odd (especially the ankle detail) although it could do more with the angle the shot is taken.
12-16-2003, 05:06 AM
12-16-2003, 06:02 AM
Amazing Work a thousand times. It's rare to see a modeling like this in Max, really impressive.
So close to make me cry:cry:
12-16-2003, 06:48 AM
absolute perfect for this mondling,i never seem people do the opera character before, there just have a little problem i saw is about the texture,i think is too much shining,u probably need to trun off the ambient ,and put some bump mapping for the cloths to make it more reality, well, just a personal opinion, but there still one wordf i still like to say,goo job:thumbsup:
12-16-2003, 07:43 AM
impressive ... very cool
12-16-2003, 08:21 AM

Very great modelling and textures !!!
hey! they call for entries for EXPOSÉ 2 ...
12-16-2003, 08:33 AM
:surprised WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW!!! just AMAZING!!
12-16-2003, 08:55 AM
At first excellent work!! I really like the mood of the image.
The model is phenomenal and really complex - big respect (did you rig him or made static only?)
But I think the shaders aren´t satisfiing for the model:hmm:
The difusse maps are superb and really detailed - you have made great job there, but the problem is with the definition of the surface itself - the specularity and glossiness is really uniform and unrealistic. Also the structure of clothing should be more pronounced.
If you remove these issues it´ll be master work...but you are really close, man.
Congrats to you!!:applause: :applause:
12-16-2003, 08:57 AM
wow ! fantastic !
think too a bumpmap for the clothes would be nicer.
otherwise amazing work !
12-16-2003, 09:18 AM
Awesome! So much detail I like it!!
12-16-2003, 09:53 AM

Great, great job !!!
12-16-2003, 10:43 AM
top work. Though I have to say your wireframe looks messy in the clothes, but then, who cares since the result is just top notch
12-16-2003, 10:58 AM
Absolutely awesome model!!!!:buttrock: :buttrock:
But I think you can do it better with render (lighting and materials, I mean)... anyway... stunning pic.
12-16-2003, 11:18 AM

 amazing textures. id love to see the UV layout (i hate UV mapping... i always get it wrong, distorted and seam-plaged no matter what amount of time i invest on it... )
12-16-2003, 01:34 PM
Nice work!!!!damn nice:bowdown:
12-16-2003, 01:39 PM
I may have missed a reply on what the future of this model will be, but is there any possiblity of seeing it move or is this just a still model?
12-16-2003, 01:56 PM
Truly sensational piece, and undoubtedly an inspiration to, and benchmark for us all :)
Magnificent UV mapping and texturing(meticulous attention to detail);
Solid modelling technique; especially the realisation of the clothings' drapes/folds;
Appropriately posed and dramatically lit.
All in all, a masterpiece of ingenuity and perseverance :applause:
12-16-2003, 03:24 PM
He's beautiful! When I saw your wip thread of him, I could hardly wait to see this. All of your hard work was so very much worth it!
12-16-2003, 03:47 PM

12-16-2003, 05:57 PM
Wow, that is just amazing! It's hard to believe that it's 3D. I remember this guy from the WIP stages, and it's only gotten more beautiful since. Amazing piece. Congratulations on a job very well done!

12-17-2003, 03:04 AM
Great job, and congrats on getting plugged!! U earnt it
only things that bug me (minor things)
- The clothe seems to have a very smooth specular highlight, and not much texture to it. If its ment to be silk then you won't see much of a texture, but the highlights should be a lot more broken up
-The left balled look touched up and have a odd halo to them?
(lightened in photoshop?)
I love this piece, simply amazing work.
Good luck with Expose 2! :D

you honor me way too much though, i'm just learning and trying to do my best as i go

thanks everyone and take care
12-18-2003, 05:43 AM

Wow, great job kuman! :bounce:
loved watching your WIP, I just can't get over how beautiful the cloth details are in your modelling, very awesome! :applause:
12-18-2003, 06:06 PM
Exellent work! Amaizing!
12-20-2003, 06:09 PM
Man, Kuman!!! Seriously nice work man! I've seen a lot of great 3D on sites but, this is supreme sweetness! Modeling, texturing, EVERYTHING!
I would love to know more (as I'm sure all of us would) about, in particular your UV mapping. You say you used bodypaint 3D, I have tried the demo but, it breaks the model up into too many seems. I know you can then use projection painting to cover it up but, I would love to see a tutorial on how you created the textures because they're FANTASTIC!

12-23-2003, 03:49 AM
my long time friend james, you got into the gallery. congrats on a perfect work.
12-24-2003, 03:19 PM
I agree about the balls on his head--there is so much detail on the rest of the headpiece and the bright orange puffs all around really detract from that sooooo...maybe a different color, or just do a quick render w/out them.
Still a beautiful work.
12-24-2003, 09:39 PM
amazing work man.. easily one of the best ive ever seen :)
i have a question though did u model the whole character even the parts hidden behind cloths and shoes.. and then model the clothes on top of that?
and also do u plan to animate it? and if so then how would u control the clothes so they react to his body and dont go through them when he turns suddenly for instance?
once again great work
12-28-2003, 05:23 AM
:bounce: wow, the detail on the headpiece is amazing:buttrock:

01-02-2004, 03:38 PM
Very impressive :D
01-05-2004, 10:34 PM
poit is an amazing peice of work. you have really nailed the desgn and esence of the Japanize culutre.
The only thing that really bothers me to look at in this piece, is the skirt-rap-thing arpund the figure's waist. I can't tell wheather it is suppost to be plastic or fabric. It looks stiff like plastic and if that is the case then the lighting should be shinnier or something, becasue the lighting reflecting of plastic is different then what it would be reflected on fabric.
Now, if it is intended to be fabric, it probable probable should hang losly with some sort of fabric folds or possible matching the fabric texture of the chest or plants with it. It hangs on the figure very stifly and unnaturally. (I have seem these things up close in person When I lived in Japan.)
other than that, again, this piece is amazing and i realy like how you have doon this from the pose to the texturing to the lighting. good job.

BTW, amazing work. I mean, Wow.
01-11-2004, 01:49 PM

01-18-2004, 04:13 AM
Great work,
Be a Chinese the person of CG, I think that the words that I say may even have the persuasion, this Beijing playactor is very good. it looks especially realistic of expression in one's eyes.
Just the flag's drape don't naturalness of backside
02-13-2004, 12:26 AM
 just amazing
03-03-2004, 08:51 AM
Aye ya! This is the Chinese version of "Wow!"
Had to add my two-pence worth. If I hadn't seen the meshes I would have though manipulated photograph for sure. Top modeling especially the fabrics.:wavey:

THe colors are well done for the model
03-10-2004, 11:59 PM
Amazing work. his feet seem a bit short. Although I'm not familiar with the actual boots used in real life.
03-12-2004, 05:20 AM
maybe a little less realistic with eyes. they don't quite jive with the rest of the image, and they're kind of scary.

06-28-2004, 11:13 PM
Dude...absolutely outstanding WORK..
It is about time someone made some Japanese martial-art. . . .I was hoping to be the one to emphasize on that, but this is just mersmerizing.
FANTASTIC work. . . .10 out of 10 !
And thank you for indirectly introducing me to > Silo < . . .THAT PROGRAM is awesome. The Subdivision system in it is devastatingly perfect.
