I'm building a new machine and have heard the Geforce4 Ti cards work well with 3D animation/modeling software. But what about games such as Tomb Raider: AOD, GTA: Vice City, Jedi Knight II, The Thing, and Prince of Persia: SOT,?

Would the Geforce4 Ti 4200 work with any of those games with good frame rates and with graphic options enabled? Also what about a Geforce4 Ti 4800SE graphic card?

I know geforce4 Ti cards aren't directx 9 cards, but will directx 9 games work with a geforce 4 ti card?

Sorry about the newbish type questions, but just want to make sure before I purchase. I'm trying to buy a good graphic card for both decent amount of gaming and 3D modeling for under $150.

Just get it! Then you can set it and forget it. As seen on tv. It works for most 3d apps. The FX series stuff will be fully mature soon but the GF4 smokes out work just fine. For the latest games I'd say go for FX.

I got a gf4200 and it works great with pop3. I have seen a friend play vice cuty with it and it worked great there to... It also works very nice with 3dsmax, lightwave, xsi and maya. It will probly not go so fast as the new radeon cards (9500-9800) but it works:wavey:

The GeForce4TI series of cards still packs a good punch. All of the latest games will run on the card but you won't get all of the pretty effects that DX9 gives you. Right now that makes very little difference as most DX9 effects can be done in DX8.1 without much loss in quality. That will change as developers really start flexing the programablity.

Personally if you want to do games don't bother with the FX series, just hold out until the NV40, if NVIDIA has any sence at all they will have fixed most of the DX9 preformance problems in the NV3* line.

Spend an extra $18 and get one of these instead.

It will do DirectX 9 and you won't want to upgrade in 6 months like you will with the TI 4200.

It's slightly slower than the TI4200 in some areas, but faster in others. The big point is it's DirectX 9 compliant.

If you want something faster, get a 5700 Ultra, or one of these.

what graphic chip should I go for then?

Geforce4 Ti 4200

Geforce4 Ti 4400

Geforce4 Ti 4800

GeforceFX 5600 Ultra

or an Ati Radeon 9600/Radeon 9600 Pro

In my opinion, 5600 Ultra. ATI cards are Ok if all you plan to do is game.

Best Buy has an eVGA GeForce FX 5700 Ultra for $159 (after rebate) last I checked. It is a good deal faster than the FX 5600 and ATI Radeon 9600 XT ($200) and just as cheap as that FX 5600 link.

You mean this one? It's only a $20 rebate on $219...

I'll look into those GeforceFX 5600 Ultra cards. But do I really need a GeforceFX card?

I'm really not that interested in games like Doom III or Half-Life 2, two games which will take full advantage of directx9. I really just want a fast card with decent image quality, but I'm not a hardcore gamer.

Here is a list of games I will be playing on my PC. Most are older games, so I don't see why most I list won't work with a geforce4 Ti card:

Black & White
Tomb Raider games, included AOD
The Thing
GTA: Vice City
Unreal 2
Unreal Tournament 2003
Broken Sword 3
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time
The Longest Journey
Giants
Jedi Knight II

The only PC game I'm waiting for thats not out yet is The longest Journey 2.

I thought the same thing, then I bought Knights of the Old Republic. It requires Open GL 1.4, which my Wildcat VP 970 doesn't support. If you get an FX card, you are insuring that 6 months from now, you will be able to play current games. If it's not a concern, get one of the TIs, but for a small bit extra, you can have newer technology.

KOTR is an awesome game :).

One of the best I've played in the last year or so.

It was so good I beat it evil, then went right back and beat it good :).

I did it the opposite way, played it as 100% good, now playing a bad guy. Funny thing is, I'm having a hard time actually playing it evil. I WANTED to help those undercity dwellers. So I'm just getting dark side points by threatening every bad guy that gets in my way. I'll be Force Persuading every chance I get too!

edit:
Oh, I own the Xbox version of KOTOR too, that's the only way I can play it right now.

So staying away from ATI Radeon cards would be best if I want to do non-extreme 3D animation/modeling? Not even if its a Radeon 8500, 9600 Pro, 9700, or 9800?

Do Radeon cards make all 3D apps unstable, crash, and buggy? Or just certain 3D apps?

MattClary,

I have a question about the GeforceFX 5600 Ultra card you linked from newegg, do you have experiance with that exact card you listed? Meaning are you reccomending that specific graphic card?

Yes, I just built a system for my wife with that card. For the most part, any nVidia based card should be pretty much equal. I always use drivers directly from nVidia, not the manufacturer. After poking around more I HIGHLY recommend that second card I mentioned. It's a 5900 card with slightly slower memory. They have a review over at http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/evga_e-geforce_fx_5900_xt_review/ and it did quite well. Lots of bang for the buck.

Just get a R9800SE for 180 euros, mod it to a pro and overclock it to XT speeds. Buy some extra cooling for the overclock.

Voila, the best card available for 180 euros instead of 550.

I rock.
