Hey Guys! I'm currently working on a short film for school.

Working title - Bill Cosby VS The Eye

It's all about how Bill Cosby finds the Ring of Power and ends up fighting "The Flaming EYE" for Middle Earth. Should be a good one

Some of you might have seen my WIP for the Bill Cosby model in the 3d WIP section...
3D Bill Cosby Model Thread (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=106864&highlight=cosbee) http://www.artofbob.com/images/cosby_expressions01.jpg

This is a WIP background for the scene where Cosby is on the tower with the EYE. The tower will be in front of the bg.

I'm really liking that landscape. Looks like it could use some tiny amount of highlights on the terrain, but I'm betting that's in the works.

Do you plan on animating effects around the mountain?

added more textures to the mountains and touch ups. I'm kinda getting sick of mountains right now so i decided to start on the clouds a little too.

The new clouds are definately an improvement. But they've made the horizon to the left look a little... I don't know. Something's missing.

thanks for the crits guys! I worked on the clouds a bit more to make the horizon a little better. This image is going to be massive on screen so what you are seeing is the overall pic. I'll link a big pic when i'm done the background.

Sweet deal, how did you dd texture to the mountain, special custom brush or just a simple round tip pencil tool.

yeah... I see what you mean feyshtey. I'll work on it :)
finessed the clouds a bit....

Julez4001 - the mountain texture was done in Painter 8 using pastel on one of the handmade papers they got in Painter.

the background was too small for what I needed so I've expanded the pic even more now... thank goodness for the cloning and bandaid tool ;)

and did some more work on the clouds

I'm new to the scene, but I thought I'd start to pitch in... :)

The background is looking good, but at the moment I'm finding my eye drawn towards the large block of cloud on the top left rather than the firey mountain, which I'm assuming is the focal point of the piece.

What really sets it off is the vertical patterning of the left hand cloud, as opposed to the horizontal/diagonal clouds in the middle/right that draw the focus towards the mountain.

It may not be an issue depending on what you are placing in the foreground, but..well...my first crit..huzzah :)

I agree. I looking at that cloud which is starting to turn to a floating 'rock"...I liked your earlier clouds.

last update for tonite.

So far I've 3 days on this painting. I think one more day and I'll be ready to do some of the really fun stuff: animating.
I'll be posting animation tests hopefully in a day or two.

What are you planning on animating?
Are you gonna drop some elements in or are you gonna animate whats on there now?

Hey Julez4001 this clip should answer your question. just did a very rough test animation to get an idea of what the final look of back ground will look like. needs more lightining I think.

1st Test animation. 30 sec quicktime movie 6 mb (http://www.artofbob.com/images/dec18_test02.mov)

I don't think you should obscure the eye with that cloud. Somehow diminishes its importance.

test #2- this test is to see the believablity of the bg with the cg
modelling of tower is not finished. lighting is not final either but c&c is welcome!

2nd Test animation. 5 sec quicktime movie 1.9 mb (http://www.artofbob.com/images/dec19_test04.mov)

Hey thx for the c&c! keep it coming!

Echarin - I agree with u. the clouds do take away attention from the mountain but that was so people would take more notice of the tower and the flaming EYE on top.

anybody know of any tutorials on painting different types of clouds?

OMG! STOP! STOP ALREADY! every time i look at the next progressive step of your cloud/mountain scene i sh*t a brick! and every time i think you're done and cant take it any further, you outdo yourself! stop already i cant take it!! :)

if you took the time to sit down and do a tutorial on the scene, im sure it would be immortalized on the web. speaking of tutorials, the only one i know is Steven Stahlberg's here (http://androidblues.com/cloudtut.html)

i know what you have so far for the animation is a rough test, but i would like to see rolling/pulsing clouds and more parallel-scrolling layers. maybe some animated flames or thunder/lightning glowing in the background. thats just my 2 cents.

well in your test where cosby is comped to the background...

the movement with the background and cosby don't match.

Looks like you do a huge spin around cosby, but the background doesn't spin much at all. In actuallity, the background would look like it's moving way more.

just my thoughts.

I thought that glowing spot in the distance was the eye. I should have paid more attention to what you said in the first post.

You have a lot of talent, and certainly CAN paint--One thing though: The focal point looks detached from the rest of the environment. The clouds around 'mordor' abruptly end into a sunset-looking space, then dark clouds again...needs work.

I also dont like the cloud in front of the orange.

Beautiful technique though.
