what you're searching for could be the hardware render buffer. look under window-rendering editors.

You can render wireframe in hardware render buffer, just check Wireframe under Draw style in it's Attribute editor
Think CVs is possible to if you chose Points, but I'm not sure.

a dude is developing a very nice looking component rendering plug, not sure when it will be released tho. check highend3d for incoming/recent plugs.

There's a script developed by the guy who brough you the can't-live-without-script "Connect Polyshape". The script is called createWire.mel and is available at his site: http://dirk-bialluch.mayaring.com/mel/html/tools_free.shtml
It creates geometry along edges or iso's and can be really useful for a lot of cool effects, among them rendering wireframes with controllable thickness.
He's got a whole buch of other useful scripts worth checking out too:airguitar
