Well, after watching "Pirates" a few times now, I'm starting to get the bug to model an old ship. :wip:

Anyone know of any good sites on modeling a ship in 3D or ship building in general?

Thanks

Mike

Arrr....;)

An uncle of mine is building an old 17th century galleon (a model not real size ofcourse) and they got some pretty detailed plans with them. So you could check one of those model ship kits. Just an idea.

I agree, you could do worse than check out some hobby modelling books in your library for plans and instructions! - good luck!

Thanks guys. That's actually a pretty good idea. I think that's where I'll start the process.

I haven't got real experience of modelling bigger ships - but this navy patrol boat is something that just came up without any blueprints over a year ago. I modelled the body of the boat with lofted splines that I scaled down towards the front. I ran out of energy to completely finish this but here it is:

I think Carles Piles built a old ship ( on his site I think ), may be worth sending him an email about how he did it, lofting the shape would seem to make sense though, could do the the majority of the planks along the sides with a bump map perhaps

Lofting is actually a term from ship building if I'm not mistaken. Should be the tool for the job then :)

Hi there

There's a great tutorial on how to model a Sailboat in Rhino, but you can apply it to C4D too:

Have fun!

cool link twilight.

i was working on an arab dhow for that fantasy competition...but won't have time now so will have to leave it...but i got my reference from altavista image search...weren't great.

would be interested to here what peoples approached would be to modelling the planks on the sides...i went for easy option and didn't bother...but would still be curious on your thoughts.
